The song is about a singer who lies to himself about being in love. The song was written by Eric Stewart in response to his wife, Gloria, telling him that he didn't say "I love you" often enough: "I'm Not in Love" is a song by British group 10cc, written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. It is known for its innovative and distinctive backing track, composed mostly of the band's multitracked vocals. Released in the UK in May 1975 as the second single from the band's third album, The Original Soundtrack, it became the second of the group's three number-one singles in the UK between 1973 and 1978, topping the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. "I'm Not in Love" became the band's breakthrough hit outside the United Kingdom, topping the charts in Canada and Ireland as well as peaking within the top 10 of the charts in several other countries, including Australia, West Germany, New Zealand, Norway and the United States.

Nice reaction. This sound is very unique. They first did the sing with synth doing the back ground stuff. They changed that to vocals which gives the song a very unique sound.
When they created those layered vocals simulating hundreds of voices forming harmonies they would turn all the lights off in the studio and lay on the floor and look up and float away with the ambiance of it all.

10cc is among the greatest bands of the 70s in terms of its influence on other rock bands. Each of the founding members was/is a multi-instrumentalist. The band created its own studio to record, mix and edit every track. It is one of few bands to see every one of its first five albums become a Top Ten hit.

'If you want a record deal...' LOL! You really have to listen again, and again, and again..... What a song to smooch to late at night on the dance floor! Happy days (and nights). So many other songs from their catalogue that will blow your socks off when you get round to them. Try 'Rubber bullets', 'Good morning, Judge' , 'Wall Street Shuffle', 'I'm Mandy, fly me', 'Dreadlock holiday'. The UK music scene was so rich and eccentric in the 70's - was a privilege. Keep up the good work!
This the cut version. The longer version doesn't have the jump cut near the end. He's in denial all right, but cynical about it is the wrong word. I suspect in reality she's hardly aware of his existence - the relationship is all in his head.

I love this song from the moment it came out. My fav time to listen is layed back, candles lit, sound proof earphones on, glass of chilled Ky Bourbon, melting into my beanbag chair. Sorry u've missed out on some much great music, but so happy ur getting the experience. Peace
OMG when you said "Listen to those sounds", I thought it sounded like they were in outer space. Then like three seconds later, you said it sounded like he was singing in space. He definitely IS in love. He is just in denial.
Oh, you've started down a great rabbit hole here! This was 10cc's biggest hit, but they put out some AMAZING albums! Look up how they got their name, and remember, it was the crazy, libido-fueled '70s. "cc" is an abbreviation for cubic centimeters, a measurement often used for volumes of liquid. I'll just let your imagination play with that concept, and the place your mind goes is probably going to be the correct place. As for the stereo production value, that was a big thing during this era, having the sound jump from one channel to the other; the quadrophonic thing in the mid-70s even used 4 channels so you had to have 4 speakers around the room. 10cc sounds ethereal in this song, but they could also rock out when they wanted to. This song was on an album called "The Original Soundtrack" - it wasn't a soundtrack for anything, that was just the name of the album. Another hit they had off that album was "Life Is a Minestrone" and other good tracks include "Blackmail" and "Second Sitting of the Last Supper." There's a very long song on there called "One Night in Paris" that's actually several small vignettes about a crazy night in Paris that tells quite a story. I only have 2 other albums of theirs, but they released several more. On the "Deceptive Bends" album, you'll find the songs "The Things We Do for Love" which was another big hit for them, "Good Morning Judge" which was a smaller hit for them that got more play on college radio stations, along with 3 parts to a song called "Feel the Benefit." On the "How Dare You!" album, good tracks are "I'm Mandy, Fly Me", "Art for Art's Sake", "I Wanna Rule the World", "Head Room", and "Don't Hang Up" - just listen to the whole albums; the songs are usually story songs, but they're quite literary; you have to listen closely and interpret the symbolism they use to tell parts of the story. Their songs are quite nuanced, with all kinds of layers of things going on. 10cc and Steely Dan put out some of the most cerebral music of the '70s, when it came to the themes and literary quality of their lyrics. Their styles were very different, though; Steely Dan was more funky and cool, while 10cc had that British thing going on with the vocal harmonies behind tight guitars and great song engineering. The two of them were among my favorite bands, back in the day.
I think you would really enjoy viewing, on your own, the video about the making of this song. They did things on this song that had never been done before with their voices. It just sounds like a wonderful song, but when you learn about how it was produced it makes the listening all the better, hint - that sustained sound you hear in the bottom of the track is not an instrument . ❤
Find the longer version, it takes you out and then brings you back and the outro goes and goes and goes. I also love "The Things We Do for Love" too. But this song you played, I just close my eyes and drift in and out of this whole production.
Agree! Once you heard the full 6 minute version, you don't want to go back to this. Even radio stations don't go back to the single edit, ever since CD era broke (at first only albums came out on CD) if they play the song it's always the album version. At least here in NL.
10 cubic centimetres. Don't ask :) British band, from Manchester. This was recorded before computer recording technology was a thing - all done with analogue tapes. The production was groundbreaking and like a glimpse of the future back in the 1970s when it came out. There's a youtube video on how this was made that is well worth a look. And yes, he's in strong denial. The band split in two not long after this song, with two members (Eric Stewart - the lead singer here - and Graham Gouldman) writing poppier songs, and the other two (Kevin Godley and Lol Creme) exploring more experimental music and eventually becoming pioneering video producers.
As William Shakespeare would say, the man “doth protest too much,”. Which means it’s the opposite of what the person is saying. This is a song about a man who is in love, trying to deny he is in love. It’s a beautiful song ❤

Always have loved this song no pun intended lol 😂
This the cut version. The longer version doesn't have the jump cut near the end. He's in denial all right, but cynical about it is the wrong word. I suspect in reality she's hardly aware of his existence - the relationship is all in his head.
Classic 70's pop hit. Brings back memories.
"Feel the Benefit", from the 1977 Deceptive Bends album.
Yes.. that happened... Great music of my teenage years... Ended up.. he waited a long time ;D
One of my favorites ❤
Haven't heard this song in years. Brings back good memories of listening to it on my mom's radio in the kitchen. Love it.
I loved 10cc. They had a song out called from Rochdale to Ocho Rios. As I live in Rochdale of course I love that song!!
The production was beyond ❤
Vocalist and guitarist and bassist Gouldman was a huge songwriter before forming 10cc in 72 .. top 5 hits with Herman's hermits , numerous top 10 hits for other bands and wrote FOR YOUR LOVE BY THE YARDBIRDS.... OHH'S AND AHH'S WERE LOOPED BY 4 GUYS AND IT TOOK 2 WEEKS BUT ITS 164 VOCALS OF THEM HARMONIZING, THIS WAS IN 75 , ALL 4 MEMBERS WERE GENIOUS'S I. THE STUDIO... ALL WERE MULTI INSTRUMENTALIST 'S .. THERES A 10 MINUTE DOC ON THE RECORDING OF THIS SONG ON A 16 TRACK RECORDER... YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF THE COMPLEXITY OF THE RECORDING OF THIS... QUENN CAME CLOSE TO THE AMOUNT OF LOOPING DONE HERE FOR THE OPERADIC SECTION OF BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY...
I love this song from the moment it came out. My fav time to listen is layed back, candles lit, sound proof earphones on, glass of chilled Ky Bourbon, melting into my beanbag chair. Sorry u've missed out on some much great music, but so happy ur getting the experience. Peace
10CC were glorious - Also released music as Godley and Creme. It's a love song. It is musically sublime.
"Dreadlock Holiday" is another great hit of theirs but my all time favourite is "Good Morning Judge."
10cc had some amazing hits a brill rabbit hole to go down. luving the reactions rose in oxford england ❤❤❤
This boy is so in love his teeth hurts ..... He's in love all the way down to his toes . Love from Widefield ....
1st band I saw live!!!
10 Cubic Capacity (CC) one of my favourite bands and this is my all-time favourite song....EVER
Professor of Rock did a video of how the song came together.
I had my first 'smoochy dance' to this wonderful song.
Wow!! I haven’t heard this song for ages!! He is definitely very much in love: he’s just trying to deny it.
