Build of a Lifetime

- This video is about the building of my 52’ yacht Ahaluna, from 1972 to 1977. From acquiring the crucial wood for this wooden boat to descriptive details of all the stages of construction, from lofting to launching. Planking details from precise planing to gluing and nailing, each nail tying three planks together, approximately 25,000 nails, all drilled for, and punched. There are also thousands of silicon bronze and stainless steel screws throughout. This is my journey from inception to launch. Since I moved on board two weeks before launching, and still living on board after 46 years and counting, this truly is “The Build of a Lifetime”.

Absolutely incredible. I hope all the current wooden boat builders have watched. Thank you.
Tim, thank you for the kind words. I have watched RAN Sailing building in similar fashion, but I doubt they are even aware of my channel.
Wow! Very interesting build and story!
Not sure what to say… the build of a lifetime, for a lifetime, for someone who can live it right!
Pictures and drawings say more than a thousend words.
im speechless . cannot wait for more !
Wow thank you so much for posting these, what a wonderful legacy and lesson.
Vraiment fascinant ! Merci du partage. La variété est l’épice de la vie, belle philosophie. Ça mérite un livre 📖. 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
Bonjour Capitaine Albatros, Merci pour les compliments. Tenez-vous bien - Peter
Absolutely amazing loved the old photos added in the video! She is built like a tank! Can’t wait for the tour!!
You have an amazing story to tell Peter and I am all ears!
Is there a manufactured sailboat that is close to your Ahaluna?? I don't believe that I've seen such an amazing example of a classy sailboat.. thank you for sharing
So worth the effort. Beautiful Ahaluna has rewarded you with safe travel, adventure, and a lovely home!
Looking forward to the tour vid.
Immediately I see the mastery of this presentation- with a builder slimmed down to his bare bone frame, upon black & white film, seldom pausing, explaining fine details sculptured as clearly as winds address a sunset of clouds🎐
How thick did fiberglass layers add up to on the hull? Did you use a finishing resin on the final layer and gell coat? Great accomplishment and feeling of satisfaction!
Waxed resin, no gelcoat, min. thickness 9MM-3/8", doubled ca. 4 feet wide centerline, stem ca. 1"
It's such a beauty, can't wait for the tour!
Incredible ❤ you sir are an epic human! I truly appreciate your knowledge and stories. I hope to see more from you soon and hope your sails are full and riding on the rails heading to HK!
Absolutely fascinating… thank you that insight. Love your storytelling!
Excellent presentation! 👏
hi good job and I look forward to seeing the whole boat and you can be proud
Oh Boy! After making a comment on seeing your boat, I figured you had this in the works. Hope there’s a tour here. I’m just starting. 😊😊😊
Oh wait. There’s not going to be a tour here….
Thank you! Will definitely stay tuned.
amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing
One beam supporting my deck was old growth cedar..all of the other beams were rotted after 40 years…the old growth remained like new wood….the contractor doing the work treated it with reverence.
Great background and glad you mentioned the anticipated tour. One thing I think you skipped: how the heck did you get the keel on? What’s it made of and how is it fastened?
Thank you for your interest. There is a limit to how much I can cover in a video, and I am aware of the keel question, as well as other missing subjects, like deck, pilothouse, etc. I plan to cover these in the near future. Best - Peter
What a wonderful story.. where did you get the plans from?? She looks to be an 👏 home and vessel
The answer to your question might be in 'The Wrong Way Across the Pacific PT1'
@AncientMariner yes sir.. I decided to start back with your very first video and work my way forward.. Ahaluna is a beautiful sailboat!!! I don't believe I have enough experience to build a sailboat like yours and I definitely don't have the hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay someone to build me one unfortunately. I sure hope that I can find such an amazing sailboat that has been meticulously built and maintained for years so that I can go enjoy some years on the water.. I was raised along the Mississippi River in northwest Illinois but was always around power boats.. I have always loved the water but unfortunately life and marriage, children etc took the stage. I've about got my kids raised and hoping to learn all I can about sailing and purchase one in the next few years..
I have 20K off shore exp plus 1k+ races and would love to sail with you!
Hi, is the Person that did the Glassing from New-Zealand still alive. Where did he come from in NZ. I presume that the Glassing would have been around 1973. Am amazing account of your build, thank-you very much.
The Person, Architect Michel DeRidder, unfortunately passed earlier this year. Michel mixed the batches and supervised us three glass monkeys. He and wife Jane on Magic Dragon spent most of their NZ time around Keri Keri.
Thank-you for the reply. You have an amazing life on the water. In your travels on the Seas , did you come across a Clarrie Taylor, he had a John Aldon Design, 50ft approx called Lady Windemere.@@AncientMariner
Sorry, I have not met Clarrie Taylor
What's next , Captain?
Fantastic! What year was it that Shelly helped with the glassing?
Hello Rollinrock, That would be November 1974, from memory, no written record. Best - Peter
Where is the patreon account? Id like to support with a dollar or two
Hello Sir
