Peter, you have an amazing story and a great boat. I solo circumnavigated when I was 65 and solo sailed to Hawaii in 2019 at 85. I am now 89 and am planing another circumnavigation this year. I agree with you, if stop and sit in port you will die there. I will be headed west across the Pacific in December. Maybe we will meet somewhere.
Hard to not want your boat after the tour. As with most things, people with a passion are subsumed into their project. Not in a bad way, it's obvious you love Ahaluna. Who wouldn't. You have a gift for story telling, keep up the good work. Lovely craftsmanship.
You have dialed in the most efficient, effective and oh so smart and functional vessel... Planking is the interior, 7 foot bed, tool room, systems that are brilliant. You are a living, walking master class. Please continue to share the wealth of your wisdom. Deep respect.
Wow!!! She sure is amazing and to think you hand built everything and have lived on her for 46 years is just mind blowing!! Can’t wait to see the rest of the boat!!!
Ahaluna is what my dreams are full of... it used to be fast cars, motorcycles etc and even faster women but I've moved past all that now and dream of a well built sailboat where the craftsmanship and soul of the boat speaks to anyone who is interested in coming on board...thank you Peter for sharing her with us and please keep recording these videos. I can see your talent shinning bright in these videos..
I'm glad you are passing along your hard won knowledge. An old saying in the trades. First you learn, then you practice. Then you production, then you start experimenting, modify. Finally you teach, mentor. I greatly appreciate your willingness to pass along your knowledge.
Various sources are claiming that the first person to live to 150 is currently about 80. I think they were thinking of you Peter. You're an inspiration.
Beautiful boat, with character and style. It even seems that every single screw has a fascinating story to tell. In today's world with so many mass produced boats your boat is a marvel.
I am so glad you are making these videos. You have an amazing story, I hope sometime you might show us some of your construction photos if you have them. What a wonderful yacht you have built.
Hi Peter, thank you for the boat tour.. She is beautiful ..!! I like configuration and many hacks and special features you install a long the way. Amazing tolerance and beautifuly finished build.. Can't wait for the next episode!
Wow, if I could give 100 thumbs up I would, what a ship that is, A Dream boat for me. I love the layout its perfect, and all the light, wow...The engineering side, just brilliant
Unglaublich. Hätte nicht gedacht das man eine Drehbank mit auf große fahrt nehmen kann. Freue mich schon auf viele weitere Videos. Incredible a lathe.!
The most amazing boat i ever seen. It is hard to believe you built this boat and the work shop is great too. Please make more videos for us all to learn and stay amazed. Thank You.
Those deck beams running fore & aft!!! Guaranteed she's sturdy no matter how big the waves are and how hard the wind is blowing.. when I seen your video sailing the north pacific the wrong way and the wind was whipping and the waves were definitely rolling, Ahaluna was steady and not creaking or popping like you hear in other people's videos when the weather isn't anything close to what you 2 were in.. the inside is just as I expected.. I love the old classic sailboat/ship feel and look.. the interior has a soul that you can almost feel through the video.. amazing
Oh my goodness!!! I don't even know where to start! Canvas/sailmaking cabin with Sailrite machine? (I noticed your Worker B upgrade) Drill Press? LATHE? Hundested variable pitch propeller? Multiple compressors? WOW-what a boat. Everything is lovely and clean, well labeled/maintained, and incredibly shipshape. What a compliment to you Sir- she is absolutely beautiful. You should be proud! I can't wait to re-watch this video multiple times and get ideas for my trusty Cape George. Tim - s/v Patience (Cape George 38)
What an amazing Ship & Captain !!! I can see your passion for a life with the sea, as every detail for voyaging was considered in your design & building of Ahaluna. I hope she continues to serve you well for many more years to come. Look forward to the topside tour !
Amazing work Peter, you are an absolute inspiration. Your passion for Ahaluna is extremely evident. I could watch all day. Looking forward to the next. In the mean time, I wish you fair winds and following seas.
A huge shoutout from Southern Bavaria - thank you a million times for the documentation and presentation. I am somewhat out of words, what a super cool ship and owner. What a crisp mind, cheers!
What a beautiful vessel! It would be amazing if a naval engineer and a 3D scanning specialist could come together to create full size loft drawings that could be used to create full size replicas of the beautiful vessel. I'm sure many would purchase the plans and several will complete the build. Keep the videos coming, looking forward to seeing more of Ahaluna, and you explaining all her functions.
What a well disigned boat, great craftmanship Peter. you are an inspiration to me! I see you found your sail tape, visible in a woden box at 6.03 min :)
@13:38 - FWIW, I did a stint as a lighting tech for grocery stores and retail outlets a while back. The ballasts are the issue. You never quite realize how much a ballast loses output over time as the change is so gradual. An old ballast will smoke a new bulb way quicker than you would like. Upgrade to electronic if possible. One local grocery store changed all bulbs every 6 months and all ballasts yearly. Lighting was a multi-million dollar department.
Thank you for this video, Ahaluna is beautiful and very well designed. super interesting to have a sharing of a person with your baggage of experience. we see that there were hardworking and passionate people long before modern RUclipsrs 😉 convinced that your videos will bring a lot to the new sailors like me. your story motivate to persevere and pursue our projects and dreams 👍👍⚓️⛵️merci encore
I found this video through a sailing forum and I gave it a click because I am bored. I'm at @2:09 and I am siting here with my mouth hanging wide open (in actuality.) What an amazingly ship-shape craft from what I have seen so far. I had to stop to comment because I needed to close my gaping mouth for a second. Well done, sir....well DONE! I'm subbing to explore the channel.
Thank you, really enjoyable tour. Your engineering is so well thought out and proven for years. Congratulations on a job well done. Your vessel and journey are very inspiring. i wish you well in adventures yet to come!
You had me intrigued about the designer so I thought I'd go read what I could find online.. I was saddened to hear of his and his wife's passing just 2 years ago.. I'm curious what happened to their boat magic dragon?? Please keep making these videos!!! They're a real joy to watch.. after you get done several videos from now explaining the boat and then im sure you have all kinds of interesting stories and you have forgotten more about sailing than many people have ever known..
Shelly and Dragonlady, as they were known, sold Magic Dragon to a Kiwi family on the South Island a few years ago. Unfortunately I have no name or contact info on them.
This is exactly how I imagine the Millennium Falcon would look like in real life. Holy moly! What detail and complexity. At least that’s what it looks like to me. That engine box….!
Thank you so much, you are my new hero, now I have two 😊 the other one is "yrvind" who has his own channel here on youtube , he has also been around boats all his life but he has a filosofi of going small. Thanks again i really enjoy you ! Fair winds from the island of Bornholm in the baltic. And lots of love from Frida
Thank you for the kind words. I sailed the Baltic many times in 1953/4 on a coal-fired tramp steamer, as far north as Oulu, Gulf of Bothnia, including getting completely frozen in. Swedish icebreaker to the rescue.
Maybe not everyone knows, but using even the lathe we saw in the workshop requires a lot of knowledge and practice. I graduated from technical high school and it took me a long time to get used to it. The full lathe operator course is a few months of learning. This is the case with almost every item or equipment shown here, such as shortwave radios. Using each of them requires a great deal of knowledge. I also suspect that the author has knowledge of celestial navigation, because when he started sailing there was no GPS. Loved this classic boat, beautifully planned and kept fully ready and clean.
I have spent many hours watching toolmaker friends working their lathes and learned the verboten moves to avoid. Taught myself astro nav. taking shots from the beach in Dania, FL, spent all free time on tramp steamer in radio shack (age 17), the radio officer was a great teacher.
Watched a few minutes..I'll watch the rest tomorrow. I'm also in merchant navy and have sailed many yachts across oceans. Best wishes from Newcastle upon Tyne england. Exciting to see the rest tomorrow
As mentioned before, we took coal to Newcastle! On our coal-fired tramp steamer we had sunk the Plimsoll line a tad, and we had to unload some of our coal cargo before permission to sail.
Great! Enjoyed the video, thanks! Your layout is very similar to my Roberts 53, right down to the workshop! Looking forward to your next video, 73, Rudi de ZS6DX/ZS2M/V51VE
I am watching all your videos today I just found you you sir are amazing I wish you many more years of sailing ⛵️ and enjoying life and I pray for good health mentally and physically for many more years to come 73s 🤙💪🏻🐬⛵️🌼
Well done, very interesting, very informative. I also sail single handed on a large 61ft sailboat power by a perkins 265hp and the vandedstadt variable propeller. I will stay tune for the upper deck video
You have built one of the best sailboats I've ever seen Peter! You've incorporated many clever ideas that demonstrate your commitment to safety at sea. I like to keep my boats very simple, but with a boat the size of yours, you need a lot of systems, I understand that. Should you ever decide to sell her, please let me know. Where in Mexico are you? I am on the Baja, and our boat, a Crealock 37, is in La Paz. Thanks for the tour, looking forward to the next episode.
