I was at HF today. I was playing around with both but I didn't like the Icon for one reason, too many settings. Now watching this and seeing I can't just switch the batteries out, I'm kind of glad I went with the Braun. The Icon definitely looked more premium.
Thanks for showing how to take the Icon light apart. I was able to turn the light bar around so the bigger led is on the front. I did what you suggested, broke off the plastic nubs on the inside of the neck and it worked. Thanks again!
Once the plastic nubs are removed, does the light feel just as stable and secure once it's retightened with the screws? And can it still be returned to its original orientation (with the larger light facing outward when unfolded) if I ever want to change it back again (which I doubt)?
@@craigcraigster4999Yeah, it's still secure. I haven't dropped the light or anything crazy, but it doesn't move around from normal use. I didn't try turning back around to it original position so I'm not sure about that. I think you would be able to because the top holes on light bar will still line up. I bought a few more because they are on sale for $24.99 right now.
If the lighting element is reversed per the steps shown at 20:04 , is that then a permanent commitment, or can it be swapped back again to its original position (with the 800 lumen light facing outward when folded)?
The non swappable battery is no go on the Icon for me. I often find myself with a low battery on my Braun light and I'll swap a fresh battery and I'm back in business.

@14:30 I'd absolutely love to see a fix for the button on the original 390LM work light. Something more durable than the original would be great! I ended up buying a HFT wired work light with a toggle-like switch after the button on my rechargeable one stopped working altogether; no clicky, dead and very little movement, if any. The rechargeable work light is easier to use inside the engine compartment on the car, though. Thanks for the vid, and the humor!

The Braun double folding light has a fatal flaw. The joints are plastic and they quickly wear out. The tightening screws strip the plastic easily as well. I now have two of them that lasted less than a year.
The swappable battery is a deal sealer for me. You can always ditch the factory battery for a better one and put it right there with the built in one. By the time you get to 500 lumens only jumping to 800 isn't gonna be noticable by most humans.
Interestingly enough, the included battery isn't terrible. I tested it with my load testing setup, and it hit its mAh rating. I planned to swap in a better Samsung cell, because I expected it to be trash, but no real need. High current draw isn't an issue, so a quality cell that can output high amps is pointless. I'd just save the cash on buying a high mAh battery and just keep some (free, from old stuff) spares charged to swap in.
Braun? You may have fried the microcontroller that handles the onboard charging. You can charge the battery externally in a cheapo 18650 charger from Amazon, though.
Nice that China Freight had some quality products. Purchased two LED flash lights that run on AA batteries maybe 5 years ago and have dropped them several times and still working.
I have had several of the brauns over the year. Broke one in half, the switch is wonky on one, the last one was left out in the rain. Now it will no longer charge a battery or work with a charged battery. It will work on high and tip light, low light setting flickers. Picked up all three of the ones you tested and totally agree with your assessments. Would like to see a switch repair video. Thanks.
ICON was just on sale for $20 , bought 5 online. Checked the store later. The 19 they had sold in the first minute they opened. The 5 Braun's I have have taken a beating over a couple years. Only one had broken...Still works just flops around. They also cost $20.
I can actually see a perfect use for the lower brightness little rear light. Ive been looking for a battery powered light I can stick onto my mower, as I drive it between my house and my grandmas a few blocks away, and sometimes do so after dark (the neighbors must love me). I havent ever been able to find a good solution, and dont want to go strapping a massive lightbar to the front. Only issue is, id never have a rear light either to help act as a marker light to someone behind me. Not only would this produce enough light slapped to the side of the handlebars or frame, but the little back light would work perfect as a marker, though I do agree, a warmer light would be best. Thats all assuming it would be able to turn on at the same time as the front one, sooooo, null and void
They make inexpensive bicycle lights that would probably work as well for that, specifically, they have some nice red ones that can flash. I live in a neighborhood with no street lights, so I really appreciate the people that use these when riding at night opposed to the people that use no lights at all. I'm sure this would work ok for the headlight, but maybe also consider one of the red ones for the rear.

Really enjoyed your yucking it up while pitting the Icon vs. Braun. The reason I watched this video is because I already have the Braun 500 L I bought for $19 last year. On May 18 the Icon 800 L is on sale at HF for $19. Just was curious what the difference was between them besides the extra 300 L. you have a new sub.
When you plug the icon in can you see if it is charging or not? I just purchased the icon and the USB port is loose on the plug in on the flashlight and falls out. When I get it to stay in it doesn't show if it is charging or not. Thanks in advance for your response
@@thedoubtfultechnicianJust got mine yesterday on sale for $24.99, now charging it for the first time. The accompanying paperwork says the charging indicator will flash red during charging and then turn green, but mine started out with a single flashing green light and now it's up to 2 flashing green indicators. When yours is fully charged, will it show 3 solid green bars indicating that the light can now be unplugged? I don't want to overcharge it since the paperwork indicates max charge time shouldn't exceed 4 hours.

I have two of the New Braun work lights and even using my own 18650's, these new ones are not as good as the older model. Sure they have the extra hinge and fold back, but the light always turns off way too early, it just turns off, no warning or blinking. There is also plenty of charge left in the battery. Oh well. Time to find a new 18650 based light.
Flip the Light bar to the opposite side like it should be like all the other bar lights are! Need a H2.0 bit to loosen the swivel and to remove both screws that holds the ICON LED bar. Once loosed pry the side plastics that hold the bar in order to slowly flip the bar the opposite side like it is on the Braun light and like everyone wants it. Once you have switch the bar to the other side (be careful as the wires connected are a bit short and could easily ripped apart as you do this) and carefully push the bar all the way in while the still having the plastic that holds it pried apart a bit. This will help to install it in it's original position and not stay crooked to one side or become long in length because you put the smalls screws in the wrong holes! Yes the bar has two small holes, the bottom holes are to hold the light bar in position because the side plastic cups the hold the bar have two pin dents the protrude out the go in these first bottom holes to hold the bar in position. You know you inserted the screws in the wrong holes because the light bar will be crooked. Once position in the correct holes, then insert the 2 screws which will go on the upper holes and slowly tighten. Test the light bar on all light modes to make sure they work. If the single light at the tip of the bar doesn't light up that means you inserted once of the screws in the bottom hole and is making contact with the chassis of the bar and making bad contact so the light will not work. Found this by accident until I figure it all out. Now tighten all screws and the swivel joint screw that holds the bar as well but to your swivel liking with the H2.0 bit. Tighter screw = stiffer movement, etc.... Enjoy you modded Icon like it should have been from factory!
Seems like a coin flipper to me between the Braun and the ICON, although I have the original Braun dangly underhood work light, that was a waste of money, and the new Braun octagon “hockey puck” (the red one)style light; it is bright and has a strong magnetic base, but it sure does get powerful warm fast. So, I am unsure about the Braun brand anymore. You forgot to simulate the durability of each light of it being accidentally left on the frame under the car or underneath the hood by a DIYer or automotive mechanic for at least three months and finding it again later.
Quick (and probably dumb) question about charging the ICON 800 Lumen folding worklight -- the only USB-C wall charger/adapter I own is the one for my Motorola Moto G cellphone, which is rated at 5V 2A. Since the worklight's input rating per the owner's manual is 5V 1A (1000 mA), is it okay to use my 5V 2A charger, or will doing so damage the worklight's circuitry/battery? I don't mind buying a 5V 1A charger if necessary.
Love the review! It did make me laugh a bit when you talked about the work light being good for work but not for reading😂 does HF have a reading light lol?🤔
I like the improvised way of using a manual for a flashlight! Nice vid! By the way- what were they thinking making a manual for a flashlight? I think if you need it for a flashlight, you’ve got bigger issues than being in the dark!
Icon can be turned 180.remove 4 screws and flip it 180 and put it back together. But icons button wore out n has the same issue the brains V1 had. Sensitive n then not sensitive enough 500 lumens is good most of the time 800 I can say has its uses sometimes. The magnet definitely seems skimpy in the icon also the rubber coating fell apart pretty quick The icons charging takes a long time and seems to be wrong as having 2 leds then interrupting and plugging it back in, resets back to 1 light blinking. Icons circuitry is Def more efficient though. I wonder if the icon guts fit in a braun

I've had the old 390 braun for years and bought 2 more for gifts. Now I'm looking for a replacement. That icon is very nice but it really needs replaceable battery. A 30Q cell will be perfect for it. It is a better design and quality vs the 500lm braun. It almost seems like an "executive" work light, if that is ever thing. The led mounted on the outside (+ side button) is actually a great design. It allows use of the light without opening the hinge. Dang it! Replaceable battery will make it an instant buy for me.

The video has been out for a month so expect those simulation results in 8 weeks lol
It’s fine to use a higher capacity charger- the light controls the charging current, not the adapter.
@@thedoubtfultechnician I was hoping that might be the case. Thanks!
Love the review! It did make me laugh a bit when you talked about the work light being good for work but not for reading😂 does HF have a reading light lol?🤔
Excellent video, had me laughing out loud 👌
I like the improvised way of using a manual for a flashlight! Nice vid! By the way- what were they thinking making a manual for a flashlight? I think if you need it for a flashlight, you’ve got bigger issues than being in the dark!
Got both, love the icon but the braun being able to swap my vape batteries with it, love that too!
Icon can be turned 180.remove 4 screws and flip it 180 and put it back together. But icons button wore out n has the same issue the brains V1 had. Sensitive n then not sensitive enough
500 lumens is good most of the time 800 I can say has its uses sometimes.
The magnet definitely seems skimpy in the icon also the rubber coating fell apart pretty quick
The icons charging takes a long time and seems to be wrong as having 2 leds then interrupting and plugging it back in, resets back to 1 light blinking.
Icons circuitry is Def more efficient though.
I wonder if the icon guts fit in a braun
Oh my God forget about the flashlights, you have phenomenal rhetoric who your production is great, funny as hell the best is the one with the " small tip no reason inside taking a nap"
I love it original
I don't want to hate on this guy but a lot of his antics are definitely inspired by AVE that has been putting out content on here for a long time. To each their own though
I will add that the video was helpful nonetheless
You’re definitely right, and a lot of AvE’s humor comes from the Red Green show. It’s difficult not to mimic your inspirations.
@@thedoubtfultechnician I would say more like the cadence in which he speaks is similar for sure. AvE is a very smart guy and that you can tell he holds back some so that us common folk can tag along. Not an insult to you bud, best wishes.
I don't think any of them run at maximum light rating the full time. They step down from max automatically.
switch repair video please :)
Genius Pokémon reference!
Best package opening ever honestly. Everyone and thier fancy knives can go to hell
epic shit. finna get me a new braun thanks to this vidya
11:36 - I have the same problem.
Alright. Shining the light at ur taint gets a subscribe from me. Thanks for making my day
Your user name checks out!
In a different video i saw they guy daid the the ICON had the strongest magnet "said"😂
put a higher capacity battery in the braun easy upgrade
That Pokemon reference was manifique
Mullet mobile...sir I resemble that remark lol.
😂😂😂 died at mullet mobile
AvE would be proud.
How is it their premium ICON brand only has 90 day Warranty? Suckers!!
Nice rip on AVe the master of tool channels. But still, good vijeo and reviews.
I agreed !!!~~~~~
3:22 🤣
I carry my Icon im my pocket all the time, and 10$ is worth not having to deal with a micro usb
I've also left my icon on a car and dropped the car into the gravel, and it was completely unphased, ill prob pick up a Braun now that they're micro USB
20 dollars rn 😊
50% off today only
Ugh I know, I saw. Tempted to buy another! Average down
Now that's how you unbox an item LOL
It runs on all the 18650s but does it charge all kinds of 18650 or only the one it comes with?
It charges all 18650s. They’re a standard cell!
@thedoubtfultechnician8067 ok thanks yeah some of these things get almost proprietary
Smuck huh... cool bro
4:53 maybe those are metric Lumens 😂
