    Posting this in the main comments because it’s been asked a couple times: auto rev match works fine with these new ratios. I've had Rick's 2-5 ratios in my 981 GT4 since 2020 and the auto rev match functions perfectly; all the shop did was pop in the new gears and the car figured it out. No ECU reprogramming was needed.
    You’ll have to find a Porsche/VW engineer to explain it, because there is zero information out there that details how exactly this system works, but it’s definitely not tied to the gearing itself; in all probability it’s a combination of sensors (i.e. likely those on the flywheel, input/output shafts in the trans, etc.) and the ECU doing all the work. With the appropriate sensors relating to engine speed and gearbox output speed, you can calculate the effective gear ratios, hence why the ECU adapts to the new gearing. It's fairly simple math!

    • @crabapple1974
      @crabapple1974 4 месяца назад +8

      Well I think the complaint here is not that the engine is high reving but that the original gearing leaves you kind of out of the powerband a lot. Having driven an older Boxster extensively with similar tall gearing you had to go into first on a lot of thight corners on small country roads since second was geared so damn tall. It was more noticeable on the smaller displacement 3.4 and 3.2 engines. The gearing made no sense honestly. I think it was not soo much for emission etc but to keep them separated from the 911 line.

    As to the long gearing here is how I deal with it: For driving around town, I shift twice and drive pretty much drive as fast as I need in 2nd gear. Also, I enjoy shifting, so generally, I just shift early and I just miss out on the the high revving. When I need to hear some engine noise and feel the revving, I wait for the highway on ramp or find a point on the road where I have some space, and step on it. The long 2nd gear actually gives you best of both worlds - easy around town, and fun when you want it. I have gotten used to it and like it.

The reviewers complain a lot about the long gear ratios, but never mention that most manual 718 GTS/GT4 cars occasionally grind when shifting from first to second, at least for the first couple of thousand miles. I guess shortening second gear should make the synchro’s job easier, and could fix this other problem too.

    • @flyjbaker
      @flyjbaker 2 года назад +1

      It is in the gearing. If it were the differential, it would be one final drive ratio across all gears. If the gears had an “even proportion” between them, changing the final drive ratio might work. BUT….while 2nd and 3rd are the LONG gears, 6th is actually short for an overdrive gear. IIRC, 70mph is about 3000RPM with the stock ratios…..3400@80mph. If you increased the final drive ratio to improve 2nd and 3rd, that would make 6th even worse. Can you imagine 3800rpm at 80mph?? That would suck for many reasons….noise and economy mainly. Deman actually makes sixth gear taller than stock likely giving it better gas mileage and possibly less noise.

    Even without the 4.5l engine, I'm sure that this regear absolutely transforms the car. The question is: do they offer this for the 911, specifically the GT3? It has criminally long gears as well.

    I think alot of people skip over the fact that the motor that's in the 718 is the same motor that's in the 911 turbo... The reason why it can feel a little lack luster ever tho 420hp is great for 3200lbs is that it's meant to have boost behind it. Instead of just giving it its own motor it gave it a motor they already had and just took the boost out. People get smart and start boosting these 2nd generation 718s they're going to be nasty little weapons

    • @clu4u
      @clu4u Год назад

      These cars aren’t boosted, there are no turbos.

    I once had a BMW 533i that I swapped with a 3.73 lsd from an e30. Transformed the car. Added about 400rpm on the highway in 5th but made it useful in the 50 to 70 mph range. It does make one wonder why at what would be no cost to make, the Boxster/Cayman models could be even better!

    • @grad0n

      I swapped out the 3.15 in my 95 m3 for a 3.73 and it was awesome!

    • @davidbee9563
      @davidbee9563 2 года назад

      @@grad0n Your M3 would have a direct 5th gear. So I imagine it was revving quite high at speed. On my old car it was direct 4th and .8 5th. So it was below 3000 under 80 mph. The problem was gearing suitable for cruising at 90 or 100mph plus which is not suitable here in US or Canada. I think the M5 had a 3.91 diff. Changing the diff on these cars is a great way gain performance when factory options exist.

    • @grad0n
      @grad0n 2 года назад +1

      @@davidbee9563 5th was 1:1 and every 1Krpm in 5th was 20mph with the 3.73, so you didn’t “accidentally” speed when you were above 3K-the Supersprint and Corsa exhaust told on you!

    I have an ND2 and I wish 1st and 2nd were a bit longer. 1st feels so useless with how short it is and it'd feel so unnatural if 2nd gear wasn't lengthened with 1st gear

    • @AdamKlingenberger
      @AdamKlingenberger 2 года назад +4

      I have an ND1. You can basically start off in 2nd gear. 1st is only necessary for parking or creeping in traffic. I don’t think I would want them longer though, the short ratios are what makes the car fun.

    The gearing seems pretty similar to my 2021' MX-5 Miata which is phenomenal. It is a bit annoying that Porsche continues to keep the myth (that rear engine 911 is somehow superior to their mid-engine Boxster / Cayman platform..) Nobody in their right mind believes this but apparently Porsche is "in too deep" with the myth so they just have to keep it going that way plus 911 fanatics would have a mental breakdown..

    • @ChewyHighHAD
      @ChewyHighHAD 2 года назад +1

      It's a shame they hamstring the 718's to prop up the 911. No rear axle steer like in the Carrera S and up... no double wishbone front for the GT4/GT4RS like in the GT3.
