Metallica x Furnace Record Pressing: Touring the Facility
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- Founded in 1996, Furnace Record Pressing is known for making extremely high-quality vinyl records at its 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art record pressing facility in Alexandria, Virginia. Metallica has long worked with Furnace: the plant has pressed more than five million pieces of Metallica vinyl over the last decade! But the relationship got a bit more official when the band acquired the pressing company last year. With this next step, the guys thought it was high time they stopped by and saw the operation in action.
School is in session as Mark Reiter, VP of Manufacturing Operations, tours James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert around the facility.

James with a Scorpions T-shirt and Lars asking about Peral Jam album , shows how legit humble nice guys they are.
Especially Lars. Dude takes the time to hang out with the guys in QC just to shoot the shit with them. And he gets SO MUCH SHIT over Napster, and still after all these years, the way he plays drums. Most other rock stars wouldn't even take the time to turn their noses up at regular working folks. I love these guys. Since 1986 I've lived and breathed them. They're the reason I picked up a guitar and for that alone I'll be forever grateful. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
James should have worn a QRP, RTI or a Pallas T-shirt just to see the look on the guys face when they walked in to the plant. They would have probably been kicked out. 😁
What about the SRh hat 😮
I have that Scorpions tee shirt dude 🤘
@@arturoalmazan5262 thats one of the best live albums ever too
I think I speak for EVERYONE when I say we NEED more content like this! I know it's hard to get this kind of tours and stuff like that but pleaseeee it's great to see the band just being themselves off stage
Agree!
It’s hard just to get a record plant tour!!!
@@pigeonhed13 You probably have a better chance of just working there. Lol.
I worked there during the Justice box set. Unfortunately a toxic and choatic work environment. Never got a box set that I busted my buns on. I thought it was amusing when the band was throwing records into the regrind machine. When I was there a guy, second day on the job, got three of the tips of his fingers chopped off because a manager took off the safety guard. I will say the vietnamese crew are sweethearts and fun to work with.
For those that don’t know, Metallica purchased this company.
James looks like a child on a school trip and asks a lot of questions. This is the first time I see James like that. How wonderful. 😅🤘🏼🖤
He sure does
We were thinking the same thing! LOL😂
It’s his!! How does he not know any of this going in? He bought and paid for it and he’s like “duuuuh”
@@GabesmusicdiscographyI had been playing guitar for 28 years when I got a job at Paul Reed Smith. There is so much to the process of building a guitar. I didn't know how much til I started working there.
I love how around 8:45 Lars stayed behind like a kid wondering off on a field trip lol
Lars becomes more lovable as the years roll by☺️
21:57 James' impersonation of Lars in a Danish accent made me spit my drink out!
Didn’t at all sound Danish he was just being goofy 🤦🏻♂️
@@zamp6969 It sounded very Lars Danish indeed 😂
And his quick look at Lars over shoulder just before that😂
Lars has basically no accent tho
hahhahqhqhah yeah hahhahaha
I loved how Metallica introduces themselves - "Hi, I'm Kirk" - how humble attitude from them
I love at how the end how James and Lars are just talking about the cool bands they recognize like they’re a bunch of kids again🤘
Seeing these guys especially James get old makes me so sad. I don’t know why it’s just the fact they are such precious humans and I don’t wanna lose them.
Yeah but he's still sharp and on it.
I wouldn't feel sad for them, getting old is a privilege a lot of people don't get to experience.
He’s barely 60. He’s looking healthy asf now days and I’m sure he’s got a long time to go.
@@the_minimalistic_adventure I hope so. I just care about him a lot. He’s done so much for me even though we’ve never met in person. Hell he doesn’t even know I exist but he’s done a lot.
He will be 61 on August 3rd@the_minimalistic_adventure
James drove in by himself and got there first while the rest of the guys carpooled. 😂
That definitely sounds like james lol
Idk if he drove in by himself wasn’t that his girlfriend in the long coat and dark brown hair?
@@soychelly836 She is always with him everywhere, he goes.
I bet Kirk is so happy about getting that Ride The Lightning record
I love how they all introduce themselves as if all the people there didn't know their names
That’s good bc it shows they’re still grounded and don’t place themselves above others bc of their status
If I would work on a factory that presses vinyl and owned by Backstreet Boys, I wouldn't know their names. It doesn't mean that they are necessarily Metallica fans. It happens that they might just work there.
@@cricketmc5736 It really shows how humble they are
A sign of respect ❤❤
Hmm, not really. It's very manipulative, actually. They know all too well that their apparently humble/selfless attitude will be noted and praised. It all ends in variations of narcissism. To proclaim oneself humble already presupposes an illicit libidinal profit called "surplus-enjoyment" by psychoanalysis. There's always an obscene plus with every self-proclaimed minus.
You can tell James' loves this the most.
James' giggle ... that Dude is a legend
It's amazing how many human hands it takes to press and package a record. This isn't pure manufacturing, it's craft that requires skill and dedication. Props to all the good people at Furnace 🤘
3:01 "They would DIE at the end of the day" *James & Kirk smiling like kids*
Love how James is absolutely NOT letting go of his one of a kind, personally made, untrimmed Ride the Lightening!
Vinyl and CD to me are the best music storage out there. This and a good english stereo system ❤
That's not really subjective, we all know tapes degrade pretty easily. As far as more obscure mediums like floppy disk, Gameboy cartridges, wax cylinders, those scroll thingies with the holes punched out... Who cares haha
Even thought being 39 i am not old enough to have been brought up during the record era i grew up with cassettes and cd's.its very cool seeing how they make them records.
Why do people have this misconception that records ever stopped being made? It's the second most popular modern medium after CDs.
Your folks never played records? I'm 34 and almost exclusively grew up in the record and tape era. CD's were expensive back in the day and we got those later. You were brought up in the record era because it was all we had.
@OrnEmpireRetroCovers honestly nope I only grew up with cassettes and cd's.i do think records are cool though.
Must be cool for them to see fresh prints of Kill Em all thinking about how many original pressings they could get when they first released it, they've come a very long way
Unreal isn’t it? From very humble beginnings, all the anguish and tragedy. To owning and publishing all their own music AND own their vinyl pressing company. You may rate or hate their size and new music, but you just cannot deny the sheer effort and dedication.
@@invisiblekid99 Their new music is good, hard to sustain a band that long and still come up with new material, cool they own their own record pressing company because why not
Genuinely surprised to see such a walkthrough. I work in a plant myself and this is pretty much exactly it. Those Swedish automatic machines are weird and something I've never seen before, but I kinda like the tall structure to them. The Newbilt machines (the ones making the splatter) are dangerous for your hands if you're not careful, so I bet the plant was sweating having Metallica make records on it. Great video!
best band ever
Yes
ABSOLUTELY 👍
Twi should be getting a raise and a promotion!
The Vietnamese crew gets paid in cash, so they get decent pay. Or at least they did when I worked there.
@@crosswalklarry all staff is on salary + benefits - Eric/Furnace
@@astoriffic Hip/Hib definitely was. Came right from Reiter's lips.
I’ve listened/followed Metallica since i was 14 years (i’m 45 today) but thinking of it i’ve never seen James and the others just being humans! More of this please!
Those Ride The lightning records are amazing. Buying one now.
I've collected MOST of their back catalog on colored vinyl. I haven't owned a turntable in over 30 years, but I just think they look cool, and maybe they'll be worth something someday. I think a LP's sound is garbage compared to digital...but there's a nostalgia and coolness factor to them. I remember back in the day, trying new bands I had never heard of based on how cool the album art was.
@@Skulllywag You haven't owned a turntable in 30 plus years, but you think LP's sound is garbage? Get a quality turntable, needle and stereo system and you'd think otherwise. There's a HUGE difference and I'd say digital sounds like garbage.
@@Mr.White10-65 Uh yeah...I've owned quality turntables. How long ago means nothing. No matter what "Audiophiles" SAY, digital can reproduce sound EXACTLY as recorded....something vinyl never has or ever will be able to do. The only thing vinyl has ever been superior at is distortion. I thought this argument was settled 20 yrs ago?
How awesome is this ! Glad to see they're are still a few music manufacturers that actually care, with how different the industry is today compared to its vinyl heyday. Long live Metallica, long live Music 🤘 !
It is so nice to see the guys in their own form, like being just good people with kind hearts.
📀📀 THE ENTIRE VINYL RECORD INDUSTRY IS AN ART THAT SHOULD NEVER DISAPPEAR.
THAT'S WHERE THE WORK OF A MUSICIAN OR BAND IS EMBODIED.
IMPRESSIVE!! 📀📀
My first few Metallica records I bought as a kid were all on vinyl. This is awesome, fella's...thanks for the tour.
Metallica: Buy a million dollar business
Lars: “So is everything here, corporate, the assembly, practical? How many people work here?”
Just found that a bit amusing 😅
😂😂😂 that's what I love about Lars, he's detailed as h€ll ......he was a detective in a previous life.
They own part of the business.

Congratulations to all the Team and thank you Metallica for show us how important is every step in the process❤
Great video. Show your fans more things like this. Im sure everyone loves the behind the scenes as much as i do
LOL! Kirk's disinterest is hilarious.
He looks so bored....
His yellowish color left me intrigued, too much makeup perhaps?Or is he start to turning into the yellow bastard from Sin City🤣
I thought the same
Probably why decide to get an arm massage @ 3:27.

hahaha I missed it xD He looks tired as fuck
I just did some electrical work there recently this place is so damn cool and the employees all look chill and happy
James’s laugh hasn’t changed since he was a teen. Love it.
That's the case for 99% of people. 👍🏽
@@A_Final_Hit true, but he has a definitive giggle
@@thecamocanoe That he does. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
This is a gem of a video, love it 😍😎 So cool to see the Metallica family hanging together, and enjoying the guided tour. Something so special about vinyl, and it's manufacturing stage, still arguably the best way to listen to music, and best packaged, with the much larger canvas to display artwork and it just allows you to fully immerse yourself into the record(s).
Metallica
I love you
Metallica
Anja
Lars and toothpick were absolute best friend..LOL!!
Absolutely loved the learning process involved in making records! Thanks guys! 🤘🤘
Hugs from Portugal. 🇵🇹🤟🏻
You can tell James loves the machinery aspect of this. Kid in a candy store.
I'm a 6ft 3" 270 lbs 46 yr old man and all I could think about at the beginning is how much of a bitch I'd act like if I ever got to shake their hands 😂
Don't blame your age on not being able to lose weight, being fat is a choice
I want it, I 'd love to have a custom autographed LP Lars... Sick process, guys!!
Happy 40th to Ride The Lightning. Wrote a reflective for it on my website. 🤘A very close second to Master of Puppets as the best record in the catalogue.
METALLICA FOREVER !!!!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Yes ❤❤
You need to show more of this to the WORLD and I can see that nobody else ever could be interested on digital stuff. ♥
Fascinating tour of this particular plant. Love how at 12:36 they explain their process of splatter and colored vinyl are specifically made in one area and location of the plant-by hand.
That is so amazing! Truly it's an honor that you shared that with us. Thank you Metallica and Furnace 🤘🤘
James genuinely seems interested in this like he could work there if metallicA doesn’t work out.
James is always on a search for new horizons
Wow I never searched at how records are made this is pretty cool damn now I have a total understanding how this records are made and now I have so much appreciation for them.
And that was funny James at the end when you said Metallica
I loved it!! I always enjoy the 'how is made' videos. I never imagined that 65 people could run all THAT!

Man, i also noticed that. Isn’t that a bit weird?????
@@vimeiro10 maybe its because of his guitar playing to ease his arm a little
So much hard work behind the scenes to get me my lovely Vinyl Albums. Thanks very much Furnace
METALLICA I LOVE YOU BEST BAND IN THE WORLD 🤘🤘🤘
Love how James was so engaged!
Love this! I was recently wondering if the guys ever have visited their record plant in person. So funny that they bought it sight unseen, lol. “Sure, we’ll take it, why not?!” Anyway, it was a smart move. I don’t know if it’s by design or coincidence, but it’s nice to see the factory kind of run like Metallica- everyone is welcome, learning on the job with zero experience, being super precise, workers having an enjoyable experience, the ship is clean and tight, etc. This record plant kicks ass, and I’m glad the band finally made their way over to check it out.
And yeah, Lars, I want that record!! I’ll even take James’ wonky one to display as an uppity art piece, lol.
This was amazing and very insightful 🤗 I love this band 🤘
I’ve worked in plastics for a lot of years and it’s funny to see Metallica regrinding scrap with a smile lol
That was just awesome! Great to see the band as "regular guys". I'll be taking my son to Foxboro next week for the show, a true full-circle father and son moment. I've been a fan since '84 and saw them live in '94. It's going to be awesome to share this with my son...
Vinyl is making a comeback and it's crazy to think Metallica has been together since it was the primary format for music even though they were more into tapes at that point
Dam - This is 1 seriously Cool Video !!!
METALLICA RULES 👍🏻🪙🪙🪙🪙👍🏻
This is very cool! Im buying more Metallica vinyl now knowing it’s a quality product!

Very cool and informative video it's a treat to watch...Metallica forever!!!
I never realized how much time and labour goes into producing a vinyl record. It justifies the high prices for new vinyl now.
“Hi I’m Kirk”made my heart melt
So cool to watch how records are made and the guys digging it too!
has to be so funny to have james walk into your workplace and go "hows it going buddy?" :D
So cool. So efficient 🤘 thanks for letting me check it out

Cool to see how it works, Made me look at the swirl records differently... You actually have a custom one of a kind
Awesome video here. You guys own a pressing plant now. Please bring back the vinyl club!

Damn Kirk has released embraced fashion. Man is looking fresh. Redefining Rock royalty.
This is so cool I always wondered about this process , I can almost see wheels turning about a song from this.
