I know and love Jimis music since 1969, as a school kid I went to the library to listen to his albums ! you are right, some footage of the audience does not belong to this performace, thank you for your reaction, it was one of the best I've seen so far, nice greetings from Berlin😊
This video has edited out some of the coolest parts. Also like others have said those crowd shots are daytime shots and Jimi performed at night. I have Jimis whole Monterey set on DVD and this video that circulates on RUclips is a weird edit for sure.
Correct I have The Monterey Pop on DVD 📀 and this gets me mad! Saw this the first time on late night TV with my mom back in 1978. My mother’s reaction was pure shock and said,”I don’t understand this!”
You mentioned something about-- What were the other guys in the band thinking-- I have read every thing about Jimi available in print, that I can find, and I can tell you, for sure, Mitch Mitchell believed in Jimi from day one. Pretty much anything Jimi wanted to try, Mitch was behind him because knew Jimi was magic. He knew maybe more than Jimi, because he had that outside perspective. He saw how brilliant this dude was. But he played it cool. Mitch Mitchell, Eddie Kramer, and Billy Cox, were true friends that believed in him. And don't think that Jimi had many people in his life like that. Even before he was famous. Just my opinion.
from a quora post by Shaun Phillips: There are three different guitars that Jimi Hendrix set on fire during his career. The first occurred at the Astoria Theater in London England on March 31, 1967. Jimi used way too much lighter fluid. The guitar went up in a ball of flames and burned both of his hands, and even part of the stage where the lighter fluid had poured onto the floor. Jimi Hendrix had to go to the hospital for treatment. The incident was so serious that both the police and the fire department were called, and the owner of the theater went berserk. It's not legal to start a fire inside a theater, even if it is part of the act. This is the guitar that Jimi Hendrix set on fire at The Astoria, London, England, on March 31, 1967. Jimi’s manager quickly got the guitar and Jimi out of the building. When Jimi's crew were questioned by police who were investigating the incident, they claimed that the guitar simply exploded from some sort of electrical malfunction. The police didn't necessarily buy their explanation, but by the time they got to the theater to investigate, Jimi and the guitar were nowhere to be found. Without any real evidence, it was hard for the police to figure out exactly what happened. No one was arrested. That guitar was put for an auction in 2008. It was sold for £280,000, roughly $575,000, to an American collector Daniel Boucher. The second time Jimi Hendrix burned a guitar was the most famous occasion. That happened on June 18, 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival. That burning was caught on film and is one of the most iconic moments in rock and roll history. Jimi Hendrix sets guitar on fire at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Jimi used two guitars at the Monterey Pop Festival. One for the concert, then a another that he swapped out at the last minute in order to burn. The guitar that he set on fire was only used for the final song, “Wild Thing”. That guitar had been previously broken and glued back together, so he didn't mind sacrificing it. He busted it into pieces at the end of the act and threw it into the crowd. A piece of Jimi’s Monterey Stratocaster on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Other than a fragment of the guitar that is on display at the MET, no one knows where the rest ended up as it was all just a bunch of fragments carried away by fans. The other guitar from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, the one that Jimi actually played the majority of the concert with, still exists and is now up for auction again. That guitar was never set on fire and is in very good condition The third time that Jimi Hendrix burned a guitar on stage was at the 1968 Miami Pop Festival. That guitar survived and was given to Frank Zappa by one of Jimi Hendrix Roadies. Frank Zappa pictured with Jimi Hendrix burnt guitar from the 1968 Miami Pop Festival. “The neck was cracked off, the body was all fired, and the pickups were blistered and bubbled. A lot of people thought I had Hendrix’s guitar from Monterey, but it was from Miami; the one at Monterey was white and this one is sunburst.” - Frank Zappa It was inherited by his son Dweezil Zappa who rebuilt it so that it could be played again. He had to add new parts, so it's not quite a 100% authentic. As shown in the photo, it clearly has burn marks all over the front of it. Those are the only three times that Jimi Hendrix is known to have actually set a guitar on fire, although people who saw him play will tell you he always made his guitar burn at every performance.
This is Jimi's first appearance in the USA has the Jimi Hendrix experience hendrix blew everybody away for the next 3 years until they blew him away in 1970
Jimi Hendrix had taken massive amounts of LSD at this festival. This was his last number. He is playing it on a guitar he has spent the night before painting psychedelic designs on before burning it. Safe to say no one has seen that here before. 😮😊
More than 90% of the “crowd reaction “ footage is when other acts were performing. Jimi went on at night, most of the crowd footage is recorded during daytime. Some are reacting to Ravi Shankar’s performance. Why this individual edited a basically bogus video is anyone’s guess.
No one had ever heard anything like this. And of course they were all tripping. Jimi too probably. Pete Townshend of The Who had used feedback but mainly for effect. Pete: "Jimi took what I was doing and made music."
Which version of this legendary performance is this? Unfortunately, the video has been heavily edited, which detracts from the authenticity of what truly happened that night. Please consider replacing this with an unedited, authentic version. It would also be great if commentary could be saved for after Jimi's playing-his performance is masterful, full of phenomenal phrasing and bursts of brilliance. Speaking over it diminishes the impact. Having said that, your choice of music, your presentation and enthusiasm is outstanding !
This concert was the Experience coming out party in America. They basically flipped coin to if the Who or Hendrix would go on first. Hendrix lost and pulled al his tricks in this performance. When you his performance of Machine Gun he was an established performer and didn’t go his bag of guitar tricks as much.
what this guy is talking about ?same all shit he read this shit somewhere in a music magasine dont forget when he came back from uk as a star the black community were rejecting and sptting on him because he was playing some R&R white music
Jimi Hendrix and Prince is my guitar hero as a kid growing up in the late seventies and the early eighties priceless

Jimi, the greatest! Sadly, he only had a four year career. So glad I saw him in '68.
That’s amazing!!
Sinatra had a big radio song at the time Stangers in the Night. Always love how Jimi incorporates the melody in the solo.

Lots of terrific information here, much appreciated. A fan since 14, now nearly 70, I still believe he was in the genius category. ☮️
Wasnt the first time Band knew exactly what he was doing. The crowd scenes were pieced in

Did they edit the crap out of this. The unedited video is awesome.

That's why jimi is playing at night and the audience is shown in the daylight
Jimi's the goat just saying
