Not necessarily true. A lot of very good old turntables have a smaller platter. For modern turntables it might be true however. I am mostly a vintage user 🙈
Some good Dual turntables and higher quality changers do have a 10 or 7 inch platter, but for the 95% of the times I'd say this video is true
@@ZeusTheTornado Yeah, I have 2 Duals. One for 33 and 45 and the other one for Shellacs. The platters are 10 inch on both of them. I don't remember the model number by heart though.

Audio-Technica Sound Burger: Am I a joke?
Worst turntable by the best brand
@@turntablethomas2584far from the best brand maybe if you buy all your vinyl at the mall 😂
@@turntablethomas2584 I thought this when I got into records again. Not by far the best brand but a respectable entry level. Basically full of cheap (but half decent) Chinese parts.
@@DMARrecords I’ve heard the sound burger, both the OG and the new one, does indeed sound like crap. Decent for what it is, but overall, still crap.
@@turntablethomas2584okay, I like Audio Technica. I think their products look cool, and perform well. But they are not the best brand. They are simply higher mid range. Or, to an audiophile, entry level. To an audiophile, anything below upper mid range is just not acceptable to them.
I find that upper mid range products are the sweet spot for me. So audio Technica is perfect for me. I have a decent amount of hearing damage, so I’m not likely to notice a huge difference between a $350 AT turntable and a $600 turntable. Sure, you bump that up to a $5000 turntable and I’m sure I will hear a difference. But you’re getting diminishing returns at that point. Paying more per % of improvement. And I’m not rich so that’s not in the books. That upper mid range segment is the sweet spot before you start getting significantly worse diminishing returns.
Also, buying a $5000 or even just $600 turntable won’t matter if your preamp, amp, and speakers/headphones aren’t going to be able to properly reproduce those improvements. So not only do you need the $5000 turntable, but you need the $4000 pre amp, $4000 amp, and $2500 speakers/headphones. It gets ridiculous.
Hence why I went with an AT-LP120X, Dayton Audio pre amp/amp combo (tube pre amp, solid state power amp), and some Cerwin Vega RE20’s that I’ve had. All in all, it cost me roughly $800 in total. Upper mid range price perfection. $350 for the turntable, $250 for the amp, and $200 for the speakers, which I bought used a few years back.
The surrounds on the speakers are starting to deteriorate, so I’ll have to refoam them soon, before their sound quality starts to tank. They’re old ass speakers, but they sound good enough for me.
Hey for the most part for beginners cheap turntables aren’t that bad.
I own the first turntable you show and it isn’t bad.
Not the best but could be worse.
And not everyone can afford expensive, good quality turntables.
Any vintage turntable from a decent brand is better than a crappy new cheap one which destroys your records.
I got the Eastwood Signature yesterday and I'am returning it today. After a few hours of use, it started to play slower. Ever have that happen?
Mine was like 40 bucks. Isn’t very quality but I’m just starting out so I don’t really care yet.
@@BrodySchrimpfmusic me too! i will buy a better one once my beginner one actually breaks, but i’m fine with my crappy one for now 😅
Any record player is better than no record player, but the difference in quality between a victrola and even low-end audio-technica tables is very significant
I judge the quality on if a turntable has one of them red cartridges/ stylus
Red cartridge is bad right? Try to get a better one
That’s not even true though while most of them are trash old Hifi sets like the teac lp series we’re actually banger red needle record players, while most red dose mean ruby there are diamond ones that aren’t cheap Chinese ripoffs, and tou can even just get the cerapream blue needle to get the best out of it
I have Ortofon 2m Red, you gotta be more specific
Whats wrong with red ones
@@joeneighbour9740I think he's talking about ceramic styli. Maybe try to find out what the stylus is made of and how much weight the tonearm is tracking at. This may give you a better idea.
Jarrett, you just summed up your whole channel in one youtube short! 🤣
I recently took out a 30 year old Technics SL-QD2 turntable from the closet and after a good bit of fiddling, I got it up and running. All my old albums are in terrible shape so I bought the Beatles white album stereo remix. I also put a new stylus in my cartridge. After so many years only listening to cd's, the warmth of the sound from the turntable was amazing! The tactile experience of holding an album again brought me back to my youth. I bought a vinyl cleaning kit and bought another album, remastered Aqualung. Looks like I'm going to be spending some money on vinyl now.
I just bought a decent turntable & the record sticks out over the side but I’m total fine with that considering it’s my first record player & it works damn fine!
Ong bro
Can you close the cover?
The problem arises in potential long term use scratching records in many cases from poorly made tone arm + cartridge. Nothing to do with sound quality, most of that will have to do with the speaker.
Back in the 70's and 80's a record player was cheap crap but a turntable was an audio device to enjoy and admire
Back in the 70s and 80s a real stereo was your whole living room. A real turntable was from Teac or Marantz....
My crosley fits my 7" records just fine 😉 it is wildly annoying everytime i try and play an album and half the record is jutting out the side of the turntable
I actually have the record player in the first picture shown, a Victrola Eastwood. It may not be as good as my £300 RRP turntable but it's definitely not crap. It plays well, has a decent moving magnet cartridge tracking within spec, good speed stability and sounds very listenable through HiFi speakers. The built in speakers aren't great but I never use them. As a second player it's perfectly decent player/turntable. I'd recommend it over the usual suitcase players for sure. Also there's plenty of very good quality vintage turntables that don't have full sized platters that people would pay a fortune for.
i’m a casual listener with an eastwood i was gifted, and to be honest i personally don’t mind the sound from the built in speakers :) i can’t afford any bigger equipment for it, so i just put on a record and enjoy!!
@@Heypeeps10092 That's great! You can always upgrade to some decent powered speakers when you find yourself with a little extra cash. Or you could get a D class amplifier for cheap usually £15 or $20 online and they are unbelievably good with a decent set of speakers. There's plenty of potential in this little Victrola record player. The bottom line is if you get enjoyment listening to it through the built in speakers, there's nothing wrong with that and the upgrade potential is there if you want it in the future 🙂
@@electronraygun6346 yup!! thanks so much! I’m super happy to maybe upgrade later, but yeah even just using bt out with my headphones is very enjoyable, especially as i can listen to my parents and grandparents old, well kept records :)

@@OGCatDJM settle down Disco Stu.
@@CorridorOfChameleons94okay, trust me, I fell for the cheap portable players as well, most notable being a Victrola Suitcase. Speakers failed, models are cheaply built, and two of my records got warped. Not worth it when you can get players such as the Audio Technica ATLP60 for like $120 and still be a good turntable (especially for starters)
The quality isn't necessarily crap you just ned to change the needle every 70 plays and clean it regularly just as your vinyl get a cleaning kit and you're mostly fine.
In my opinion, if the recorded player plays the music, it’s a good one. 😭

I now have to agree. Bought the Eastwood Signature and after a few hours use on Day 1 of owning it, the player started to slow down playing records. One should not have to search the internet the first day to try and figure out how to fix it. And the suggestion of turning screws on the bottom of the motor has you searching on how to take it apart to get to those screws. Returned it on Day 2.
mannn i want to listen to records but i don’t want to spends hundreds of dollars on a record player😭 let me enjoy a victrola ty
Fr man just get what you can get, abd have fun playing records! 😁
I have a victrola too!❤
Right. I have a Crosley and don't have any issues at all other than the stylus and tracking pressure. So I got an AT LP60 Bluetooth and it's amazing. These I recommend as they don't cost a fortune LP60 being 150
defending a record carver is crazy, trust me, I used to have a portable suitcase Victrola and it sounded like crap, cheaply built, and warped 2 of my vinyls
@OfficialCatDJM OK Mr privileged, some people can't afford to get some crazy expensive beginner players and already have records, let them do what they want, and eventually, they can upgrade into a "suitable" player
I have a huge turntable from 1984 with fully adjustable tonearm and replaceable cartridge and pitch-control. But it has only 8 inch steel platter. It's not even my secondary one anymore, but it's still a decent machine.
Idk, mine is one from a sears catalog from the early 70s and it works pretty alright. The 8track player works too which is surprising
I prefer magnetic media over vinyl tbh.
How can you tell if the 8track works alright? You can't possible have a working 8track tape! LOL.
@@Robert08010 You replace the foam and foil "end of program" splice. It's irritating and time consuming, but not impossible.
Also, god your condescending.
Thank you for acknowledging my deity! LOL. What did I say to make you think I was condescending? I was told that 8tracks use a specially lubricated tape and that dry lubricant wears off over time and most of my 8tracks did in fact wear out long before I lost interest in them (not just broken splices or missing end of track sensor (because those are easy fixes) but actually began to drag too much for any player. And that was 20+ years ago. So if you are still successfully using 8rtrack, I'd like to know how, are they store bought cartridges from the 80s or did you buy some stash of tapes from radioshack before they went out of business and record your existing library to new tapes? I am an audio engineer but not an audio snob. @@qwertykeyboard5901

Upgrading turntables is alot of fun. I’m on my 4th table now in 10 years and every upgrade made me enjoy my collection with new ears. I wouldn’t call turntables crap quickly but gotta agree with you on this point. These crosley type tables with the tiny platter do sound so bad they can throw people off the hobby.
Not for vintage Dual Turntable (Dual 1019 for example).
Mine’s from the 50’s and the record comes out on the side and it plays quite well
i have the first record player. had it for years, hasn’t damaged my records at all, has good sound quality, looks nice. it’s not that serious.
I have the piano black fluance and absolutely love it.
Bro just roasted my retro life😭
Also those are portable suit case players, they run PERECT ( at least the one I bought) and I 100% recommend them for portability
I have that exact Victrola turntable, it's not that bad, it has an audio-technica cartridge and doesn't sound half bad over the rca out. I've upgraded since I got that one, but it served me well.
Bought The Mom's one of those suitcase-style Record Players off of WOOT a few weeks ago for $20. It really doesn't sound bad. It's simple to use and fine for Her. It's not something I would ever buy for Myself. I have a 30+ year old PIONEER DD Turntable that I recently retro-fitted (new cartridge, etc). But I'm looking at going more "modern" in the future.
So you are telling me that the Rega Planar 10
Aphelion 2 MC (8799€) is a piece of crap ? ☺️
Yes. Your wife's boyfriend agrees.
Yes
lmao
I get you're joking, but he says if it sticks over the edge of the platter. The P10 doesn't.
I saw this on my fyp earlier!
I have one and it has to stick a little out the back but it plays good
Mine has 12” records stick out a bit but it’s a great record player. Function over form.
What if your record player is over 200$ and has a built in cd player, radio, and has Bluetooth capability but the record sticks out the back by about a quarter inch
Mine sticks out. Pretty sure it's one of those Crosley's you can get at walmart that kinda looks like a briefcase.
Sony made a semi portable player which about the entire record stuck out except for of course, where the needle and the drive mechanism is located. That's also one of their most prestigious players. Also, the Crosby featured in the example photo is actually a pretty decent player for the price.
A lot of those little ones are crap, but you can find diamonds in the rough. Well, maybe not diamonds, but imitation diamonds. Good enough that you’re not going to damage your records, and you can still enjoy the listening experience.
If you really want to enjoy vinyl records a lot, it is best to spring for something like, at least, the AT-LP60, or even better, the AT-LP120X. That’s what I went with. Yes, it’s way more expensive than one of those crossley’s, but the listening experience is so much better, it’ll last longer, and it’s a solid enough platform to build upon. I can always upgrade my stylus, cartridge, preamp, power amp, or speakers and the LP120X will still be there holding its own as the base of that setup.
I have 2 Bush MTT1 turntables, both near mint, and paid £3.00 GB for them. They were given a 5 star rating by What HiFi back in the day,and the sound is very good, with no discernible wow and flutter.I play them through hi end micro systems, using the inbuilt preamp.
Get an 80’s Technics turntable and you’ll be fine
Not true. Just the direct drive like the 1200 series.
It’s more the $5 ceramic needles that wreck vinyl. But suitcase models do usually have them.
I bought a “good” turntable that was still the best of the red crap (sorry cap haha😂) needles… the records still jumped and I thought they were scratched. Specially the new artists. Invest on a player. But most importantly, a good needle! Unless you don’t care about the longevity of your records. They all play AMAZINGLY since I started watching this page almost five years ago.
Thank you for all the help. 🎉😊
I m sorry bro but there is a turntable called philips 242. It has a 10 inch platter and is as good as a technics sl1200/1210
just for everyone i own a crosley cruiser like he says in alot of his content that "they destroy your vynyl" incase your wondering 1 its works just fine 2 it does not destroy your records three the newer modles are much better than the last 3 they have pretty good quality for a cheap turntable thank you for you time.
The first one you showed had an audio technica magnetic cartidge so its not crap.
It is. Returning my Eastwood Signature on Day 2 of having it. Used for a few hours the first day and it started playing slow.
Are the vintage Dansette record players from the 1950/1960s quality because I have three of those. One completely refurbished and looks like new. They cost a lot of money. Especially when completely refurbished. I like them. They have a good sound, and are well made. I know a lot of people are against the auto changes but I don't stack a pile of records on. I use them manually, or just a couple of records on the stacker.
Just because the thing is large enough to hold the entire record doesn't mean it's 'quality', bud.
Actually it does matter because with high temperatures the record can bend and become unplayable, so a turntable that holds the entire record will prevent it from bending. Have a good day.
@@GPCBuilderUnless your record is either a bimetallic strip or in a hot car, thats not an issue.
Mines crap, but £7 from a charity shop (I volunteered there so got a discount too so I got like 5 records and a speaker too for £7) is pretty good haha
The sound quality is actually awesome
What about the Audio Technica Sound Burger? Literally the whole Vinyl is sticking out from all sides, does that indicate the record player is bad? I was interested in buying one but now that I saw this video I’m not sure.
Whats the top middle album in the background? It looks familiar
It's definitely one way, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor. Some high-quality ones from back in the day have that record sticking out thing.
Guess it's time to throw away my Sound Burger then. Thanks for the tip!
what? they’re pretty rare and can sell for a lot! keep it!
@@weegie3343 He was obviously joking that this garbage video would define it as crap.

haha sound burger funny
@@weegie3343I'm sorry but you just lowered my faith in humanity a little
Mine goes outward and it’s good so I don’t know what your talking about I only have a problem with like one vinyl and I think it’s because it’s the vinyl because it skips some parts of one of the songs and I think that’s the vinyls fault not what I’m using.
I haven’t seen one of your videos pop up for fking ages now lmao
I admit those aren't the best designs but they sound good to me.
What distinguishes ‘quality from crap’ is a turntable’s ability to accommodate phono cartrige upgrades. Any turntable is only as good as its cartrige. The next thing is obviously stability, so it’s best for the turntable to support the whole record. For something decent, expect to spend around $250 for a turntable and $300 for a decent cartrige with an elliptical stylus. I highly recommend the Ortofon Blue.
Good point 👍
Completely false.
One great example- Califone.

Can you elaborate on this? I’m trying to look for a good record player but conflicted on which are okau
Bro, they’re all good
I’m looking for recommendations on those table record players that come with the legs included. What do you recommend? in enjoying the Victrola Eastwood record player.... can't wait for the Eastwood II
Bro, I have one of those $50 suitcase record players hooked up to my living room stereo, it sounds really good but I know an Audio Technica is a bit better and am saving up for one. If a suit case player is all you can afford and have a living room stereo to hook it up to, then that's all you need if you're just the casual listener, and nothing beyond that.
I would recommend the audio technica LP60. I got it on sale for $199 AUD and it’s great quality, easy to use and it’s automatic, so quite beginner friendly.
Thank you!! I was thinking about getting that one, is it better than the victrola?
@@beetle__bugz most victrolas have a red stylus, which will damage your records over time, so I would go with a higher quality one to preserve your records in the long run. 😊

the soundburger by AT is a great table
I’m not a record expert but I have a victrola where it sticks out and it works great
I thought the same until I got a real turntable with dedicated speakers. It sounds so much better and doesn’t damage your records.
I usually look for the red needle, lol I always like to ruin people’s fun when they’re enjoying music by telling them they don’t get the same quality like I do and then they tell me no one cares so I go home and listen to my Radiohead FLAC and realize I can’t eve tell the diffrence
I have a victrola Eastwood up north at my Grandmas place I hope it lasts a while someone tell me if I should return it since we just bought it on Friday or it stays good for years to come?

Let me ask you a question if I only have $40 to spend on a turntable because im poor should I just not listen to vinyl. Should I not have all the wonderful experience that vinyl has to bring.
But can you explain why? I mean it'll still play the music right?
Are there any good turntable speaker combos?
I wish i found this channel before i started wanting to listen to old records... the player i got is so crab
It really doesn't matter if you have an expensive record player or not, you probably just don't take care of your records if they stop working or skip
Cool, guess I should’ve stuck with the iPod.
Thanks for the gatekeeping.
What about the sound burger from AT?

Unless you want to fiddle with the trim pots, its crap.
Quick question, I got gifted a sony PS-LX2. It runs great and from what I can tell, sounds decent. How good/bad of a record player is it compared to some newer ones.
If you can enjoy what you have, that's quality.
Some vinyl record players that are like that are perfectly fine. If you want something small if you are living in a small apartment and don't have the room for a turntable.

is it that bad can you tell me
I have one that is off edge
This video did make me hesitant to buy it but I got it cause it was cheap…it’s from 1978 and it sounds good sooo..idk if this is true anymore
The more videos I see about turntables and getting the right one and getting into the hobby has reassured me that my suitcase style record player is fine, and this way I can happily go about my life not being 'one of those' types lol
They are good sometimes People can do a upgrade with the needle Never use a plastic needle only temporary change to aluminum and Rubber Dimond ✨️
What if it sticks out the back a little
Had a coworker who was a music afficionado ... speakers at over € 2000 each ...
... and then he put on an Austrian jodeling album 😱
How do you justify this?
Good to know...
This is absolutely stupid. Has literally nothing to do with the quality. By that logic the vintage Sony PS-F9 is “crap” good luck finding one for under $1000.
While many lower quality units may be built like this, it is in no way whatsoever a measure if a turntable is quality.
What about cartridge types, MM vs MC, DAC’s, platter types, so many details that you could actually point out to help newbies, but to say “if it hangs off it’s bad”. Is stupidly ignorant.
You should not have a DAC in your turntable, unless you're listening to some sort of digital vinyl
His second example of quality was crap.
What about Sony PS-Q7 ?
Anyone who says that compact record players are crap is full of crap , because all record players are great there's just ones made for people who don't want to fork out a ton of money on a large record player or Hi-FI. I have a Crosley record player and i love it , i don't have the space for a large thing with separate speakers or the money to be spending on one.
I see Piano Nights and God is Good. You have wonderful taste.
Looks like i found the perfect people to ask. I’ve been in the market for a REALLY GOOD QUALITY record player to play my dad’s old vinyl collection, what are your recommendations?
i have the exact same reason to buy one, funny coincidence! everyone here is saying that Sound Burger is really good
But the Victoria turntable you show has an AT3600 magnetic cartridge just like the AT-LP60X and that is decent not crap. Way better than the ceramic ones.
I have that turntable (Victrola Eastwood). If you play through the speakers on the front, it sounds ok, but it sounds way better if you run an RCA cable to a decent receiver. Also, you can make it sound even better if you replace the stylus with an elliptical one. I got one from LP Gear for $40, and it noticably kicks the sound up a couple of notches.
