"Rosanna" is a song written by David Paich and performed by the American rock band Toto, the opening track and the first single from their 1982 album Toto IV. This song won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year at the 1983 ceremony. "Rosanna" was also nominated for the Song of the Year award. It is regarded for drummer Jeff Porcaro's half-time shuffle, commonly known as the "Rosanna shuffle".
The song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks, behind "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League and "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.[4] It was also one of the band's most successful singles in the UK, peaking at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart and remaining on the chart for eight weeks".

  • @RockDocNeal

I've loved this song since the first time I heard it when it was released in 1982. It has a fantastic arrangement, great singing by Steve Lukather and Bobby Kimball and killer guitar and piano solos, but as a former drummer (current keyboardist), it was the unique, super cool drum beat by Jeff Porcaro (legendary session player) at the beginning that first drew me in. He devised the drum beat by combining 3 different previous famous drum beats from Bernard Purdie, John Bonham and Bo Diddley. Per Wikipedia..." The drum pattern is known as a "half-time shuffle", and shows "definite jazz influence", featuring ghost notes and derived from the combination of the Purdie shuffle, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's shuffle on "Fool in the Rain", and the Bo Diddley beat. The Purdie shuffle can be prominently heard on Steely Dan's track "Home at Last" from Aja, which Jeff Porcaro cited as an influence".

Regarding other commenters reference to the song being written about Rosanna Arquette, one of Toto's keyboardists, Steve Porcaro, was dating Rosanna Arquette at the time the song was released, but the writer of the song, keyboardist David Paich, has said that it was based on compilation of ex-girlfriends and he coincidentally named it Rosanna. As a joke, the band and Rosanna Arquette decided to play along with the rumors that the song was about her.

"It's so musical". Yes, it is. You rarely get a pop tune with guitar shredding and piano walking and the greatest shuffle beat ever. Toto is amazeballs because it was made up of the best session musicians in LA. They've had different singers over the years who came and went and came and went. And Jeff Porcaro --- the most versatile, creative drummer ever, who played on thousands of songs --- sadly passed away too young. But they've been making killer music since the late 70's.
I always recommend this insanely great VERY MUSICAL song that features the hardest drumming you'll ever hear in a pop tune, and more of Steve Lukather's insane guitar prowess.

The greatest element of this song IMHO is the the rhythm of the lyricism and that background shuffle.

Lex started to mouth the words, then caught herself, proving what i have always thought. They listened to the song before, so they're not being truthful. I saw this same thing on other reactions from different people. Other than that I love Toto and about every song they sing, and I like Lex too. She seems sweet and adorable. I just wish people would be more truthful.

Written by David Paich. He is on keyboards. He wrote this about Rosanna Arquette. She was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro.
The next year, late Robert Arquette, youngest brother of Rosanna, played the boy in the music video She's a Beauty for The Tubes. Steve Lukather played lead guitar.
As for the lead vocals in Rosanna, Steve Lukather sings the verses. Bobby Kimble sings the pre-chorus.
Music video. Cynthia Rhodes is the actress and dancer. This was before she married Richard Marx.
Notes. Late Eddie Money was the main writer for Shakin. He also sang. Rosanna in that song has nothing to do with the song Rosanna. The actress in the Eddie Money song is Apollonia Kotero.
Same year Steve Lukather, late Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro played in the self-titled late Donna Sommer album and Thriller album for late Michael Jackson. Jeff played for Michael McDonald. Steve Lukather also played with Chicago. These members of Toto were working like a dog! 🐕L🤣L
RIP Robert Arquette/Alexis Arquette, Jeff Porcaro.
