I would have preferred that the humongous amount of money for that job be invested in the mining industry, where half the materials for the construction of that highway abound but remained untapped. Why should one expend N4 billion for a kilometer stretch of road no matter its soil condition?
We have a surfeit of Bitumen and Granite, some of the basic construction materials, in the Nigerian states of Ondo, Edo, Ogun and Lagos, as well as Granite in Ogun, Enugu, Kogi, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Plateau begging to be exploited.
Why is Nigeria, the 6th country in the world with the largest reserve of Bitumen still importing Bitumen, to the tune of 268,000t last year alone, from far-flung countries such as Germany, Italy and India, when our 45.7 billion barrels of it lies untapped?! Could it be because importing such materials (in dollars) makes it an easier source of corrupting the system and making personal gain from public funds? Again, the abandoned petroleum refineries in Nigeria are capable of extracting Bitumen from hydrocarbon by-products. Why are they still lying dead with no plan to bring them back to life?
ON GRANITE, another prominent road construction material: Why is Nigeria still importing this resource from far away countries such as China, South Africa, South Korea, India, Turkey and Italy, when we have a surfeit of it in the Nigerian states of Enugu, Ogun, Ebonyi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Plateau?
It has become obvious that the importation of these materials is the main reason we are spending so huge an amount of N4 billion - no matter the exchange rate of the Naira to the dollar- to build a ONE MILE stretch of road in Nigeria. It is prodigal and unacceptable. It is the same manner of profligacy that exists in our Steel, Glass, Petrochemical and Aluminium industries which together form part of the foundations of an industriased nation.
Nigeria has the basic raw materials to be positioned as an industrialised country if those resources are judiciously tapped, but "for where"? The lust for the filthy dollar through the award of huge dollar contracts "nor allow Nigerian leaders to think properly..."
The next general elections must address this issue and no amount of religeous or ethnic-based preferencies must be allowed in taking such decisions.
ONE MORE THING ON THE LAGOS-CALABAR COASTAL ROAD:
Permit me to digress from the subject to a bit of politics.
Remember, during last year's general election campaigns, Tinubu had publicly advised Lagosians and Yorubas that electing Peter Obi as president could only mean that Lagos will lose the advantage of continuing as the only state hosting the seaports to which about 90 percent of imported goods to Nigeria's 230 million-strong population berth, with the state benefitting in scores of ways from every imported item. That is the secret of Lagos' source of wealth - taking from what belongs to all.
He had warned his people that voting Peter Obi for president will take away that advantage, as he, Peter Obi, will share some of those imported cargos to the seaports of Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar, to the loss of Lagos ports.
What Tinubu came up with to attempt to preempt that possibility? Announce the "Construction of a highway named Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road" to dissuade those clamouring for the refurbishment and opening of those seaports in the hinterland by providing a new road to keep the Igbos who make up the bulk of importers from asking for the opening of the ports at Calabar, Port Harcourt and Warri, which are closer to them than Lagos. Did you get the hint?
While people such as Pa Edwin Clarke and ex-militant kingpin, Asari Dokubo and others in their likeness, wallow in praise-worship of Tinubu for commencing on the project that has too low a probability to inspire belief, given costs etc., time goes on and Lagos continues to collect those revenues from the ports, increased number of estate developers, tenants and the huge work force etc. that have both impacted positively the economy of Lagos State above those of other states.
Let me risk a guess. That project will not be completed during Tinubu's term(s) in office. It's idea is to continue to deflect criticism from the South-South and Southeast re the absence of a functional seaport in their region, and to provide breathing space for Lagos State to carry on as the only destination for incoming imports to Nigeria for as long as it takes.
