honestly pineapple bun is my favorite childhood feast! It is simple but really brings you enjoyment and satisfaction when u taste it. In Hong Kong or southern mainland China, we usually stuff a cold butter in the middle of a warm pineapple bun and have it with a nice cup of milk tea. MAJOR satisfactory!!!! u guys can actually make another video talks about how to make the famous Hong Kong silky milk tea!!!
That sounds divine! I will definitely have to try that. And yes, I would like to see how to make milk tea as well. I'm guessing it's not just simple tea with milk poured into it. That lacks the typical style and elegance I associate with most Asian cuisine.
Mine just came out of oven . OMG, they taste so good. The topping is to die for. Thank you for sharing this recipe so that I don’t have to purchase from store anymore. Love home baked goods
Wow! I have never expected to see Hong Kong food in this channel since I have been subscribing for more than 3 years! It's so surprising and thank you for sharing this lovely bread to people all over the world!
Huge thanks from Hong Kong for making our classic bun. Some places would put red bean paste in it, some put a slice of butter. Together with milk tea, that's the best afternoon tea you can get here.
I'm from Hong Kong and I can't believe you guys went there and I didn't know that. :P For a really unhealthy way of eating them, but REALLY good, is to put a stick of butter in the middle of a bun, let the heat of the bun melt it a little, and eat it that way. Both the original bun and with butter are considered as a Hong Kong style breakfast. Mmm what I would do for a HK style breakfast now. xD
Greetings from HK! In HK, the dough is less sweetened, and we put whole pieces of butter inside the bun to make it "菠蘿油" (literally Oiled Pineapple Bun).
We buy these all the time in Vancouver where Hong Kong desserts are commonplace. So delicious! I would love to see you guys make the even more delicious Hong Kong coconut buns which actually contain coconut!
That's what I thought, too! But then Japanese cuisine is often related to Chinese thanks to invading and later peaceful cultural exchange. And with the melon pan you can replace the fluid with fruit juice (in the cookie dough) so you could actually make them taste like pineapple
+cheshire_kitten Before the invasion they also had friendly exchange in ancient times. That's why Japan has Kanji and a lot of Japanese words sounds a lot like Chinese words, particularly Mandarin.
OMG! I am from HK and have been watching Sorted Food ever since the beginning!!! It's a huge delight to watch you guys making one of the most famous food in Hong Kong (for both local and tourists) and learn how to make it (honestly we only had it during yum cha or in local bakery but never knew it was so easy to make!!!)!!! Thank you so much for the recipe!!! Please come to HK for a fanmeet!!!!!
Thanks for the pineapple buns shout-out x I am from HONG KONG!!! Having been following you guys for more than 9 years, and I'm going to make these lovely pineapple buns now.
i had no idea the pattern came naturally that kind of just blew my mind. I grew up eating these, theyre absolutely delicious and since the bun is so airy you can pretty much finish it in 3 bites
ive grown up eating this and have always wondered how the super delicious top layer was made because that's my favorite part of the bun. now i have a recipe! gonna give this a try soon :D
Omg! I'm from Hong Kong and I absolutely LOVE these I'm so happy you made a recipe from my home country :') thank you sorted food you guys are my heroes hehe
YES!! FINALLY something from Hong Kong! Try having the bun with a slice of ice cold salted butter (when the bun is hot)! It's the best way to have pineapple buns!
I'm from Hong Kong and I really hope people will try to make it after watching this video as pineapple bums are really the best local food here and no Hongkonger has never ate them. The taste is amazing especially when you cut it in half, put in a slice of cheese or butter and let the heat of the bum melts it❤️💛
oh wow thank you! I ate this almost every other day when I was a kid but I moved to the US and they obviously don't sell them here. Now I can make my own!
i always have these pineapple buns with a coconut custard and they are sooo good! for those who haven't tried pineapple buns i would recommend/10 they are amazing :) :)
woohoo! (greetings from HK) thx so much for making a recipe of this HK best known food! xd In the bakeries in HK, we can put redbean paste into the pinapple bun or even butter (we put a whole block of butter right after the bun comes out of the oven so the heat of the bun melts the butter block (that buttery aroma
Sandwich between a thin slice of butter, or a pork cutlet... Yummmm Or even better, which is my favourite, put Roaster Pork( Char Siew) filling inside omggggg So glad you guys are doing more Cantonese dishes, they are amazing!!
It's not the real pineapple bun experience unless you serve it with a big slab of fresh butter in between (a slab, not a spread of butter, not a sliver of butter, a decent slice you take straight off the block), and the bun either served warm or toasted so that the top is nice and crisp. Have that with milk tea made with evaporated milk for the authentic experience. Speaking of Hong Kong bakeries, can you boys also make egg tarts?
i believe so...i think as the top part bakes it molds onto the bottom and 'cracks' to form a pineapple-looking design? just a guess. they probably would have told us if we needed to score it or something.
Ok. Can you use baking paper instead of greaseproof paper as that's a bit confusing? Where do you get your equipment from as I need some? And how was comic con?
I really want all those bowls of yours... the big ones and the tiny ones, they're all so cute... could you perhaps make a list of where you got such amazing bowls?
My inner HK pride is screaming and waving it's arms around wildly. Those look amazing!! They look like authentic pineapple buns! I know you guys usually receive a bit of constructive criticism when presenting 'ethnic' recipes but this time you guys have really nailed it. Top tip: Try eating it with a slab of butter sandwiched between two halves of a bun and pair it with a cup of hot or iced milk tea! It's terrible for you but it'll give you a true HK experience!
Was JUST thinking about this, first had it in Singapore and it quickly became a breakfast favourite. So happy u guys did a recipe on that! Put some red bean sand in there or kaya or even custard for added flavour and creaminess.
Ji Zhou well, I'm not a big fan of kaya so the last time I had it was... a few years ago haha but it is similar in a way haha ,, majority of the people in Hong Kong eat pineapple buns with a whole bunch of butter though
Any commentary on the differences between Mexican conchas, Japanese melon pan, and these pineapple buns? I haven't found a lot of information about the connections between these, and maybe other, breads. Would you happen to know anything? They're my fave ;)
The Japanese bakery in San Jose makes the Japanese "melonpan" version of these and they always look ridiculously perfect, even more so than these! AND they have chocolate, matcha, and chocolate chip flavors. I can't have them from any other store, the bread there will always be my favorite
yay!thanks for making a Hong Kong recipe!😂we really don't add pineapple into pineapple buns!the top layer is traditional made of lard and ammonia powder (there are of course flour and sugar haha ) love from Hong Kong
I was wondering, where I'm from, it's actually pretty standard to always use milk for doughs instead of water. Is it just the region I'm from (Lower-Sachsony, Germany) or are there other regions where that's the standard?
could you use pineapple infused sugar or blitz up freeze dried pineapple or dehydrated pineapple and sub that for 1/2 the sugar so they can at least taste like pineapple buns?
You should try making Tin Ho Wan's char siew bun (roasted pork bun) which uses a similar pineapple bun base but the inside is filled with juicy roasted pork yum
Those look like the Japanese melon pan, except with those, the cookie goes all the way around the bun and it's sprinkled with sugar on the top. It's probably one of my favorite "pans" in Japan :) If you guys are going to make another bun video, would you make the kare pan? Any SORTED fan from Hong Kong? No? Just me? Ok~ Pineapple buns are such a HK classic and I've grown up eating them, thanks for the recipe :D
hi

+Cleo Lau omg haiiiiiii :D

Ben: "it looks quit smaller in your hands" Mike: "That's the excuse I always give". Thanks Mike.
I'm super super happy about this!!! People finally know this is not from China, but from Hong Kong!!! Man, the difference is huge
Yes!!! THANK YOU SORTED!!! LOTS OF LOVE FROM HONG KONG 🇭🇰❤️🇭🇰❤️🇭🇰❤️🇭🇰❤️🇭🇰
Mine just came out of oven . OMG, they taste so good. The topping is to die for. Thank you for sharing this recipe so that I don’t have to purchase from store anymore. Love home baked goods

"We tend to wear shirts at meet ups" We'd prefer it if you don't
I did start to wonder if maybe there would be a comment like this and it just happened to be the first comment :)
+alice littlejohn I am the voice of the people XD
+Tarah Field you are indeed :). You are rocking it 😀
PERV!
Nice prof pic... you're so lucky you got to meet Ben aww

Mmm what I would do for a HK style breakfast now. xD
You did a really good job!! Looks exactly like the ones I eat. Something extra you can do is to give it some filling to take it up a notch.
Greetings from HK! In HK, the dough is less sweetened, and we put whole pieces of butter inside the bun to make it "菠蘿油" (literally Oiled Pineapple Bun).
Hi, it's just the top part crunchy and sweet right? The bun more of milk bun but not sweet bun right?:)
I made these yesterday and everyone loved them. They're pretty readily available here in Vancouver but it was fun to make them myself.
Cheers from Hong Kong! The recipe is awesome guys, there's so many other cool recipes you could consider from Cantonese cuisine as well.
We buy these all the time in Vancouver where Hong Kong desserts are commonplace. So delicious! I would love to see you guys make the even more delicious Hong Kong coconut buns which actually contain coconut!
you can also get these buns with a pineapple custard filling at chinese bakeries, so good!
Ooo custard sounds like a great call!
I LOVE these - especially when warm with a wedge of golden butter melting over the crisp top!
These looks and has a similar method in making melon pan. for some reason, i prefer the melon pan
i think so too
it's similar, but melon pan has cookie dough on top, while pineapple buns have a more butter-like sheet over it
That's what I thought, too!
But then Japanese cuisine is often related to Chinese thanks to invading and later peaceful cultural exchange.
And with the melon pan you can replace the fluid with fruit juice (in the cookie dough) so you could actually make them taste like pineapple
"thanks to invading" omg lol xD
+cheshire_kitten Before the invasion they also had friendly exchange in ancient times. That's why Japan has Kanji and a lot of Japanese words sounds a lot like Chinese words, particularly Mandarin.

Traditionally chefs place a small dollop of the sweet crispy shell and use a scraper and scrape the paste to make it super thin.
I wanna cry i live in hong kong (westerner) and i buy these all the time, AND NOW I know how to make them YEAY Thank-You!!!!
I ate pineapple bun almost every morning on school days when I was in elementary school. Never got tired of it.
I've had these stuffed with custard and small chunks of pineapple and they are sooooo goooooooood. 😄 I'm hungry now.
Before I hit the play button I always think, "come on SORTED, make me hungry." And you always do. : )
Hi guys, I come from Hong Kong. You do make it professionally, I hope I can see more Hong Kong food from this channel.
In Hong Kong, people will also add a slice of thick butter into it before eating! TASTES SO GOOD!
ive grown up eating this and have always wondered how the super delicious top layer was made because that's my favorite part of the bun. now i have a recipe! gonna give this a try soon :D
it looks similiar with the crispy cream puffs you guys did previously... love it though
I think it looks more like melon pan
true... though im just comparing it with the recipes these guys had done before
you re right.. it did look like melon pan
+Dirham Raizal very similar... But enriched bread rather than choux dough.
I see
it looks like mexican "conchas" only the mexican ones have colorful and flavored pineapple areas.. does that make sense? 😉
You guys need to make a cookbook with all your personal favourite dishes for different occasions, as well as tips and guides.
Omg! I'm from Hong Kong and I absolutely LOVE these I'm so happy you made a recipe from my home country :') thank you sorted food you guys are my heroes hehe
putting the custard inside them makes them sooo much better! 😍
I am the sorted food fan from Hong Kong, extremely excited to see such recipe in your video!!!!!!!!
i love pineapple buns with the char siu meat filling, savory and sweet the perfect combination
Cut it open and put a massive piece of butter inside, with a glass of cold smooth milk tea!! Fantabulous!
Lovely! For your stand mixer what speed do you use and whats the watts of your mixer stand?
YES!! FINALLY something from Hong Kong!
Try having the bun with a slice of ice cold salted butter (when the bun is hot)! It's the best way to have pineapple buns!

oh wow thank you! I ate this almost every other day when I was a kid but I moved to the US and they obviously don't sell them here. Now I can make my own!
Great job, guys. I'm so drooling over this delectable treat I always enjoyed eating when I'm back home in NY.
i always have these pineapple buns with a coconut custard and they are sooo good!
for those who haven't tried pineapple buns i would recommend/10 they are amazing :) :)
woohoo! (greetings from HK) thx so much for making a recipe of this HK best known food! xd

no pineapples? next you guys will be telling me tiger bread doesn't have tigers in it
And I'm sorry to tell you this, but rocky road doesn’t contain actual bits of road. Or rocks, for that matter.
Well a chocolate mud cake doesn't have mud in it... 🤔
"no angels were harmed in the making of this Angel's Food Cake"
+Sayuri Kinomoto Because it has the consistency of mud
uhh... Well Spotted Dicks dont have...
Sandwich between a thin slice of butter, or a pork cutlet... Yummmm
Or even better, which is my favourite, put Roaster Pork( Char Siew) filling inside omggggg
So glad you guys are doing more Cantonese dishes, they are amazing!!
What is plain flour? Is it all purpose? And what is consider strong flour?
Hiep Nguyen yes, plain and all purpose are the same :) strong flour tends to be called strong flour or sometimes bread flour :)
Mmmmm. That turned out amazing! I basically grew up on these, never thought about how to make them, but now I can!
Hello from HK! That's legit pineapple bun! congrats on nailing the recipe, you've earned a nod from us locals, SORTED! :D
Hey Ben, I've a question, maybe its silly..:/......why do we punch the risen dough before using it?
It's not the real pineapple bun experience unless you serve it with a big slab of fresh butter in between (a slab, not a spread of butter, not a sliver of butter, a decent slice you take straight off the block), and the bun either served warm or toasted so that the top is nice and crisp. Have that with milk tea made with evaporated milk for the authentic experience.
Speaking of Hong Kong bakeries, can you boys also make egg tarts?
YES! Big slab of ice cold salted butter goes best with freshly baked pineapple buns🤤
Add a thick slice of butter in between the bun and you'll be in heaven. TRUST ME!
My favorite Chinese pastry since forever. Thanks for the recipe.
OMG. Growing up, this was my favourite baked good. Thanks guys for this.
Ohh these are a childhood favorite!!! 😊 one of my comfort food. Best eaten with a nice hot cup of milk tea
waaaaaaaaaaait a minute... so that pattern on top of it just... happens? what?
i believe so...i think as the top part bakes it molds onto the bottom and 'cracks' to form a pineapple-looking design? just a guess. they probably would have told us if we needed to score it or something.
in their recipe on their website, they did mention that you can score it to get more of a pineapple pattern
Ok. Can you use baking paper instead of greaseproof paper as that's a bit confusing? Where do you get your equipment from as I need some? And how was comic con?
I grew up with these in Taiwan so good fresh from the bakery!!
As a Hong Konger living in Austria 🇦🇹 , I really miss some HK cuisine especially pineapple bun, thanks now I’m here.
had these with bbq pork, plain, and custard filling... favorite childhood treat XD
As a HongKonger,I would put a cold thick slice of butter in the middle and eat while it melts ;3 omgggggg so good
I really want all those bowls of yours... the big ones and the tiny ones, they're all so cute... could you perhaps make a list of where you got such amazing bowls?
3:10 "Some time has passed in our studio and our buns have risen" lmao
[snickers] Well, they weren't still abed so one can only assume that they had, couldn't one. XD
Yes!! I'm Chinese and this is what I've grown up to! You guys did a great job on this recipe!
I always get these at a bakery in Chinatown in Vancouver. I really want to try making these myself now.
Try these with a slice of cold butter sandwiched in the bun! Its delightful!!😍😋
Was JUST thinking about this, first had it in Singapore and it quickly became a breakfast favourite. So happy u guys did a recipe on that! Put some red bean sand in there or kaya or even custard for added flavour and creaminess.
try getting some butter and serving it on the fresh warm bread, makes it even more delicious
+cher well I like the crunch on the skin, plus it's already rich enough... I'll try it next time and see~
Ji Zhou it will still be crunchy! cold butter works the best ;) do give it a try someday
+cher i guess it works, is it like kaya toast?
Ji Zhou well, I'm not a big fan of kaya so the last time I had it was... a few years ago haha but it is similar in a way haha ,, majority of the people in Hong Kong eat pineapple buns with a whole bunch of butter though
Any commentary on the differences between Mexican conchas, Japanese melon pan, and these pineapple buns? I haven't found a lot of information about the connections between these, and maybe other, breads. Would you happen to know anything? They're my fave ;)
If I want to make a smaller batch, any tips on how to get the right amount of egg in the dough?
"wow it's because you've got bigger hands, that looks quite small in your hands"!!
"that's the excuse I always give"
lol that bit killed me 😅😂
you did pineapple buns!! you did pineapple buns!! So unbelievably excited for this... pineapple buns are the best!
I grew up eating these every week, never thought of making them on my own!
I would love to see bloopers for this!
So much childhood memories with these. Favourites.
these llok delicious! are there any recipes out there which are filled pineapple buns?
I think the same thing in Japan is called melon pan (bun/bread) but I could be wrong
They are made similarly but the tastes are a little different
Can't believe u made our local food!! U r reli talented on cooking everything
I have add these many times! There is a unique filling inside of it
The Japanese bakery in San Jose makes the Japanese "melonpan" version of these and they always look ridiculously perfect, even more so than these! AND they have chocolate, matcha, and chocolate chip flavors. I can't have them from any other store, the bread there will always be my favorite
one of my favorite HK food in all time. Gonna make some this weekend. Thanks for the video guys~~~
"That's because you have bigger hands, it looks quite small in your hands!" "That's the excuse I always give..." Again with the innuendos you two!! XD
yay!thanks for making a Hong Kong recipe!😂we really don't add pineapple into pineapple buns!the top layer is traditional made of lard and ammonia powder (there are of course flour and sugar haha )
love from Hong Kong
I was wondering, where I'm from, it's actually pretty standard to always use milk for doughs instead of water. Is it just the region I'm from (Lower-Sachsony, Germany) or are there other regions where that's the standard?
It's really normal to use milk for doughs in Finland as well.
Normal bread that you would use for sandwiches or whatever is made with water usually [ireland]
Oh my goodness I'm from Hong Kong and when I saw this I immediately gave a thumbs up.
could you use pineapple infused sugar or blitz up freeze dried pineapple or dehydrated pineapple and sub that for 1/2 the sugar so they can at least taste like pineapple buns?
Is there a reason you guys left out the egg yolk for the topping in this video? Does it make a lot of difference?
For being a Hong Kong people, i feel so glad and like excited because you guys finally made something from HK!😁😁
In HK you can sometimes get them with custard or cha-siu (Chinese bbq pork) inside. :)
OK now I understand this video, yes these buns are amazing! the crispy topping is crazily something!
I think i'll just make myself a big batch of pineapple topping. Its my favourite part, i had no idea it was so easy to make!
You should try making Tin Ho Wan's char siew bun (roasted pork bun) which uses a similar pineapple bun base but the inside is filled with juicy roasted pork yum
pineapple buns that i've had sometimes have custard in the center they're amazingg
hope to try this recipe soon
I like Sorted Food videos with Mike and Ben. (They have a "Sorted" scale? Woah!)
Those look like the Japanese melon pan, except with those, the cookie goes all the way around the bun and it's sprinkled with sugar on the top. It's probably one of my favorite "pans" in Japan :) If you guys are going to make another bun video, would you make the kare pan? It's essentially curry in a bun which is then deep fried, and although it might sound odd, it's sooooo good!
Wow never knew that it was a simple recipe! Many thanks to the SORTED team!! :D
Just got back to Hong Kong for Summer and saw this video. You guys rock!
Oh god comfort food since I was young, thanks for putting up this recipe!
Would there be a way of combining pineapple into the dough somehow? or maybe substitute the juice into the crispy top? The idea of actual pineapple buns has got me craving now!
I wish you guys put your own twist inside the buns! There's so many options that i eat daily! Red bean, bbq pork, custard and so much more!!!
you guys should go to Taiwan or someplace that has ding tai fung (aka HK) and check out those soup dumplings. There's usually a glass screen where you can see them making it. It's pretty impressive.
