Hi Sue .. This was first done in 1961 by Joe Jones ( of "You Talk Too Much" fame ), and was a minor hit .. But it was a huge hit for The Rivieras, and that's still the version that is mostly played on radio .. There are apparently numerous other covers of it, but the 2 that I'm most familiar with are this one, and The Ramones .. I love the Rivieras, Dictators and Ramones versions .. Just a great song !
Hey Wayne, the names you mentioned ( Joe and The Rivieras) don't ring a bell but I definitely have heard this song before so it is probably one of them. "You talk too much" also doesn't sound familiar either. I will have to look that one up and give it a listen. But I loved this version! It was great. Do you know any other songs by The Dictators that I should check out? 🤩💜
Ah! Glad this popped up in my newsfeed during lunch hour! haha!
Little more about them:
So the Dictators formed in ’73 in the Bronx, while the Ramones formed in ’74 in Queens. Go Girl Crazy also came out a year before the first the Ramones album. It’s definitely a contender for first punk album. They had pretty much the same influences too, but I’d say the Ramones condensed their influences into a more basic, streamlined sound better (which obviously became the formula and blueprint for what was to become with punk rock). The Dictators were more obvious with the influences; you can hear the bubblegum influence in there, but also hear blazing heavy metal guitar riffs and big drum fills, etc. So their sound confused a lot more people (was it metal, or punk?) But from a comic-book junk culture humor, influence and style standpoint, I’d say both bands are pretty similar. Andy Shernoff also co-wrote a lot of later Ramones songs with Joey, played bass on Joey’s solo album and even some bass on the Ramones album Brain Drain. They were all pretty close friends.
Both bands also influenced one another a lot. The Ramones ended up covering California Sun too (despite knowing the Dictators already did it). By the Dictators 3rd album, you can also hear how they started stripping their sound down more to a Ramones style. For Dictators original songs, I’d suggest trying “Stay With Me”, “Faster and Louder” or “Two Tub Man”. Their 1973 demos are really something too!
As for Dick Manitoba: The original Dictators were a 4-piece with Andy Shernoff on vocals. At one particular show, one of their wild roadies, Dick Manitoba, jumped up onstage in a bathrobe and started hyping up the crowd. The audience went crazy, so he ended up becoming a sort of unofficial 5th member of the band. On the first album Go Girl Crazy, he’s sort of like a guest star (even appearing on the front cover… he was also a pro wrestler). By the 2nd albu , he’s the official 5th member and lead vocalist. Not sure why he stage name is Manitoba though! No idea if it’s related to the province.
Another tidbit: Ross Friedman (the lead guitarist) ended up forming the power metal band Manowar in the 80s!
Sidenote: since you're Canadian, are you familiar with Teenage Head? Basically Canada's first punk band, formed around the same time as the Ramones. The Ramones were big fans of them too. their S/T album with "Top Down" and "Little Boxes", "Picture My Face" is a classic!
Glad you dig it! Cheers!
Hey Richard, glad to hear from you. That one was for you!! I loved it. I really like old punk muisic. It is just so cool. I loved all your backstory. It was fantastic. You are extremely knowledgeable. Thanks so much for that. Yes I totally know Teenage Head. They were an awesome band. I will have to play something from them. I think it was cool how the Dictators and the Ramones helped and influenced each other. I thought the story about Dick Manitoba was fun. The jacket on the album cover with his name on it actually had the outline of the province of Manitoba on it that is why I was curious. He must have put the province on the jacket since his name was Manitoba. I really appreciate all the info. Thanks a bunch, Richard. :)
@@playitagainsue That's funny you mention the province outline on the jacket. I've loved this album for decades and have NEVER noticed the outline of Manitoba! wow. I'm gonna have to look more into that cause you might be right; he could've just done that cause of his last name. Definitely gonna research that more though!
Yeah Teenage Head were so good! That S/T album has got to be the greatest Canadian rock'n'roll album of all time.
Thanks for the Dictators reaction and cheers!

I think this is the only song on the first album that Handsome Dick sings. He became a full member of the band between Girl Crazy and Manifest Destiny.
Hey Lordjohn, thanks for the info. I appreciate it 🤩
I've got the 2nd and 3rd albums by The Dictators, but not their first one, which this came from .. Yes, they have a raw, heavy, punk sound, and I quite liked some of their work .. But I don't think they had anywhere near as many catchy songs as The Ramones .. Just a solid, no frills, band .. Cheers, Wayne
Awesome, can you suggest any songs that I should check out 😎
@@playitagainsue Long time since I've listened to those albums, but I'll have a quick look through to refresh on what I would next recommend for you to check out !
as much as I love the Dictators, I gotta agree with you that they aren't as great as the Ramones - that said, not many are!
The 2nd album (Manifest Destiny) is a really strange one. Almost as if they were trying to go for a super slick mainstream rock sound. I believe Mark Mendoza (later of Twisted Sister) played bass on that one too.
That 3rd album though kicks ass! On a given day, I think it's as good as Go Girl Crazy. "Stay With Me" is one of the greatest love songs of the punk era imo.
That's also Bruce Springsteen counting in the "1-2-3-4" on "Faster and Louder".
@@LongGone77 Hi Richard .. Thanks for your comment .. You certainly know your Dictators .. As I said to Sue, I hadn't listened to them for a little while, so I just checked out their 3 albums from the 70s again to refresh .. And yeah, I had forgotten what a fun, and full of attitude band they were .. As you mentioned in another comment, they had that mix similar to The Ramones of punk, rock, comic book junk culture, and other influences .. But their extra heaviness of sound made them particularly hard to nail down into a category.
Favourite songs and suggestions for Sue have some in common with yours .. From 1st album, "California Sun" and "Two Tub Man" .. From 2nd album, Steppin' Out" and "Heartache" .. From 3rd album, "Stay With Me" and ""Baby Let's Twist" .. Overall, "Stay With Me" and "Steppin' Out" would be my Top 2 .. Cheers, Wayne
@@wayne_twentyfive Yeah "Heartache" is a great one from Manifest! I like "Exposed" a lot too. The punkier ones from that one are great too, "Young Fast and Scientific" and "Science Gone Too Far".
They were sort of like a mix of Blue Oyster Cult, MC5 and The Beach Boys (with the more straight-forward Ramones influence coming more into it by Bloodbrothers). They did a great reunion album in the late 90s too, "D.F.F.D". The song "Who Will Save Rock'n'roll" is one of their greatest.
The Ramones also covered this song.
