    1FZ-FE is definitely my favourite 80 series motor, even considering upgrading from my 12HT 60 series, for the coils and offroad capability.

    Mine's a 3fe and I love it. Running dual petrol and LPG. It's the slowest tank out there but I'm not running it in any races so I don't care. It'll drive over whatever I point it at and never skips a beat. Bloody reliable donk.

      Mine is a 3f on LPG and petrol in an auto sixtie, it's done around 600k has gotten me everywhere I want to go in the last 21 years and has never been apart, yes it's slow, so what, got a 5.5L Mercedes if I want to go fast, but I find myself driving the sixtie Every day!

      @@paulboon1100 Don't warn about the falling in cliff i'm pretty sure the stability control will keep you on track. Nice car for the road the 5.5L Mercedes but i'll stick to my old school Patrol for the bush

    I’m an FZJ80 owner, and love it. I get 15L/100KM very reliably, it is mostly a tow vehicle for the boat and caravan up and down the east coast but it is also a very capable off road with its twin locked diffs. I’ve never had a problem in a water crossing, can also hose the engine down while running it and it doesn’t give a shit, has a well sealed distributor and ignition set up. Cheers, great vid!

    got a 96 1hdft manual, its our camping tripper. Spent 15k on extras ie custom stainless water tank were spare lived, dual carrier, bar, warn winch, rhino alloy rack, lifted foam cell shocks etc we love it

    My sister recently gave me (ie. free) their must loved but neglected 1994 80 Series FJZ80R Landcruiser. They've had it since new but after my brother-in-law had a stroke some 12-15yrs ago, he stopped driving and the 80 mostly sat on the driveway, as my sister preferring to drive her smaller RAV4. The 80 was only occasionally driven to the shops. I gave the 80 some serious body detailing to bring the paint back to a shine. Fixed some minor scuffs on one wheel arch and the rear bumper ends plus replaced the faded OEM side decals at the rear quarter panels. Now it looks mint. Its pretty much stock apart for an OEM bullbar. Mechanically apart from replacing all the various hoses and getting it properly serviced, its in top knick. Oh, did I mention its only done a genuine 87,000 kms? It could be one of (if not the lowest) travelled 80 Series in Australia.

      There was a 1HD-FT in tassie that sold about 18mths ago. Had less than 60,000ks original owner a old guy only drove it to the shops once a week. Pretty sure it sold for 65k +

    I bought a 1997 petrol 80. The deciding factor was the purchase price differential plus maintenance cost difference to the diesel. It is not a daily runner, sits parked until the next trip. I figured the cost saving pays for the fuel.

    Thank you very much for the video, it helped me a lot when I was planning to buy my 80 series. I ended up getting a 1995 GS model. It came with full service history, 350,000 KM, factory fitted front, rear and center diff locks, H151 manual gearbox and more importantly the beautiful HD-FT engine. I love listening to that engine! I paid about 10K Australia Dollar in South Africa, I am not sure how much it will be worth in Australia.

      So glad to have helped. 10K would be cheap I think. FYI the centre difflock is a standard feature due to the all wheel drive off an 80 series. So it's kinda like saying my 4wd has 5 tyres as though the spare is an added feature. So we would say yours is twin locked.

    By the way, after knowing the 1fz was designed to last 1 million kms I love my LC even more :) The previous owners didn’t take a good care of it I think, so I’m happy with half a million kms before it needs a rebuild.

      I have a 2007 100 series with 65k km i love it so much the only drawback is fuel consumption 😁

    I have a fj62 with a 3f and it is a fantastic motor I have flogged the absolute guts out of it I tow all the time. I have owned it for over 10 years.
    In hind sight I think a non turbo diesel motor would be better a hell of a lot less tuning required not fast but torque to burn down low.

    Good vid. Agree with everything. Have had two 1fzfe 80s and now a Multivalve. The petrols are definitely nicer around town but the diesel I never have to drop gear going up a hill on the freeway. The diesel also seems to be better crawling down a hill in low first off-road. Both are great but I love my multivalve.

      Yeah the diesel have very good engine breaking due to the high compression. Due you find it a little slow pre boost? I have found that.

    My 05 landcruiser 79 series has the 1HD-FTE motor. Best motor Toyota ever made. Good power with excellent reliability.

      I’d argue the 1fz-fe is the best. More power in HP at 1hd 202hp and FZ 240HP the FZ does have less torque but the HP helps. And same reliability. But cheaper In Total cost of running. But at the end of the day they're both great motors for their day.

    I have 3f that's been flogged and neglected for 30 years and still gutsy. Heaps of torque Don't know why everyone hates them.

    Petrol is great for sport driving. Easy working on them, cheaper parts, POWER!!! On the road mine is only a lil tipsy, but hard off road it has a drinking problem that you couldn't live with for constant sand etc. It's nice to see someone else that sees the value in petrol for 4x

    I love my 1fz-fe. Even though i blew it up. And down the highway its a rocket ship, Slightly down on torque off the black top

    My 3fe threw a rod and the piston was bouncing off the crankshaft and it was still running no issues. The only giveaway was how loud it was.
    It’s not an efficient or powerful motor but I’d trust it to get me anywhere.

    I've got a chopped 80, originally a 1HZ which I swapped to the 1HDFT 24 Valve. I would only have diesel (partly because I'm a diesel mechanic/engine builder)

    I'm the happy owner of the a 3fe Fj80, and am very happy with it, and I feel the it is definitely worthy of being called a engine, it will by far out last a 1fz-fe, come on guys, it a great motor, mine has 408,000 kilometers on it, but I have a bud who has 850,000 kilometers on his and both of ours are unopened,

    I`am the Present Owner of an Off the frame restoration 1997 series 80 . 235,000 miles Awesome Machine Period. Like a Vault not one rattle Period.Gave a Rolex President watch a Safe Queen Don`t miss it a Bit. Just took Series 80 on 150 Miles off road Mojave Desert Adventure and Dominated the Trail all the way. Experience Pure Gold!

    My 1HZ aftermarket inter-cooled turbo goes pretty good. Never missed a beat.
    One thing thats overlooked is ratios. Mines paired with the shorter ratio manual (used on the naturally aspirated manuals to compensate for low power) on 33s, standard diffs. In traffic it feels almost zippy. Wish my 5th was 20% taller to drop the highway rpm. At 110kph its like 3k. Powers not the issue, legs are too short so its revving harder than it needs to to keep pace - that effects fuel consumption heaps

      @@kittyhello6635 it probably would work as it’s for a similar sized engine but you need to look at the complete system not just the turbo. Best to talk to people who are doing the conversions and go from there.

    Found a multi valve on facebook. This thing was frickin brand new. I couldn’t believe it. $20,000. From memory i think it had 159,000 km on the clock. Manual transmission. No mods. Cleanest example ive ever seen. I wouldve bought it but it was already gone:(

    I just purchased a 2000 79 series Cruiser (1HZ non turbo) to replace my 2008 3.0 Pootrol, for my work truck. The Patrol had done 112k when I bought it and it's now at 150k and it's cost me thousands getting things fixed. 9 times at the mechanic in the space of 3 years and 40k klm. I'll never buy a Nissan again.
    This Cruiser has rust and few other issues, but the engine is in good condition with 290k on it. Reliability is key when living rural and running a business.

      All my Toyotas have had very high Ks and still been reliable. I've never owned a Nissan so couldn't comment there.

    Wouldn't say it's the best, but it is a really good engine.

      They are a good motor, but they are litterally the crappiest on in the 80 series. It's just to heavy for that motor!

    1hdft. Awsome motor. Easy to adjust the fuel and boost. Mine boosts to 13.5psi factory. All mechanical. Very easy to do the cam belt. Roller rockers. Water pump is a bit more difficult because its behind the cam belt but you will probably only need to do it once. I get about 700km a tank. And thats not the long range tank.
    I call it the 8 outa 10 truck, does everything 8 outa 10.

    Love my 94 1fzfe, plenty of power, cheap to service and smooth to drive, don’t see how people are getting such bad fuel economy out of them?!! I do on the daily 15/100 around town and a good 13/100 on the highway with all the gear. Even off road in the sand smashin it still get 600kms out of a tanks, I’m happy with that, for the amount of money to buy and keep running ( old or new ) a diesel is not worth it for me, had owned mine 80 for 3 years 👌 on ya mad Matt

      I think you need to recheck your numbers.. even in perfect conditions I've never heard of a 1fz motor getting less than 15L/100km

      @@AiDOS__ I have a 105 auto with all terrain, 2'lift. In city driving it uses 23L/100km. On the highway, sitting at a steady 100km/h with swags etc on a large roof rack I get 18L/100km.

    Hi Matt and Andrew.
    Just watched your video and thought it was excellent.
    I have had 1 80series HDT, and 2 x 4.5 petrol machines and loved them.
    I have since upgraded to a 4.5 105 series.
    One factor to consider in the equation is that all the motor types will use fuel... and they all come with different price tags.
    If you consider the saved money in the purchase of the petrol motor and spend that on the "extra" fuel...
    You have a lot of trips across the Simpson desert or up the high country before you saved money runs out. ( coupled with the savings on services etc).
    That and the smooth running of the petrol and more power the petrol is a winner.
    Just my thoughts.

    HDJ81V-RNP GX with 1HD-T (because SA didn't get the FT) VX Limited.. keep it stock, change the oil every 5000kms and it will never let you down

    Im from the carribbean, i bought one recently from an old couple thats in very good condition. Its a 97, white lc 80 with a ran down 1hd ft that had 470,000 km on it. Still paid a decent sum because of the tip top condition it was in. No rust ofc, original cloth interior, no cracked dashboard, power windows, airbag (again, 97 model).
    Looking to swap it out with a redone or near fresh 1hz thats easy to source where im from because some of the toyota buses for private transport system use it. Im so bloody stoked.

      @@MadMatt4WD Its a ran down 1hdft, ie cracked heads, poor cooling overtime etc. They had a gem on their hands they likely didnt know how to maintain. Instead of spending a fortune to repair it, im going to just swap it out for a reconditioned, reliable, available engine that was also one of the original options for the 80 series.

      @@MadMatt4WD Also its going to be a daily driver. I'm moving to the far north east area of the country im in (trinidad) and travelling will be 1.5 to 2hrs to and from work, with majority of the time spent on very, very bad, windy, pot hole filled and dirt roads.

    Something to keep in mind re: 1fz economy. an early 1fz 80 has a tare of around 1960kg. a fzj105? roughly 2400kg. 400kg makes for a huge difference to both fuel economy and payload availability.

    best thing to do with an 80 is to trade it in for a 105 live axle. haha mad respect for you boys, good food for thought. will be looking for a FT soon for mine

    Wow my 1fz 80 auto used 16L per 100 lifted with 285s and loaded with gear sitting on 120km. I suggest you put on a snorkel, k&n filter along with a set of genie extractors and a 2.75 inch exhaust gave me a 20% reduction in fuel usage. Either that or a super charger makes them much more efficient and fun.

      Hey mate i have all the above bar the K&N filter. did you correct the speedo for the tyre increase. The number I quoted are fairly average for this motor so if you got 16LPH you did really well. My roof rack doesn't help either.

      @@MadMatt4WDused a GPS speedo! well I would suggest getting a blower if your still concerned about fuel usage. My mates 80 with 35s and very heavy towing a heavy camper trailer went from 35L per 100 down to 18L per 100km. Just make sure you and get a proper computer like a haltech instead of the piggy bank set ups that come with the kit.

      People seriously don't understand combustion and stoichiometry. Boost does not improve fuel economy. It adds power. You can't add more air without more fuel. The engine burns 14.7 litres of air to 1 litre of fuel vapour.. if you add boost not only do you raise the risk of knock so that means you have to run higher octane fuel which cost more, but the engine will also run a richer ratio to prevent a lean condition and when you're sitting at around 1 bar of boost the ratio is probably closer to 14.4 to 1 or less meaning more fuel usage on the highway when it's constantly making at least a few pounds of boost. There's no way you improved fuel that much without changing tires and tire size, gear ratios, adjusted cruise speed, aerodynamic work, weight stripping and potentially a whole different engine. The "economy" part of boosted cars these days is the fact that they are a small economic car to start with and have a turbo to make twice as much power so that with daily driving it only uses slightly more fuel than a really small engine would use but isn't as slow and boring to drive. Whether it's a 6.2L V8 or a 2L 4 banger with a turbo or supercharger they will both use the same amount of fuel to produce 500hp.. the problem with the 1fz motor is that it produces a lot of power and torque early in the rev range so at highway speeds it's eating up the fuel because it's producing way more power than is needed to keep it at that speed but as the revs go up over 3000rpm it doesn't produce a significant amount more power so not much more fuel usage but the speed goes up to use a higher percentage of that power that's already being produced. This is why in South Africa we had an 80 series loaded for big trips that would do 25.5L/100km at 120kph but at 160kph the fuel consumption was lower at 20.7L/100km

    I have 1997 80s with petrol + gas conversion and its great with Gas but yer its more expensive. Car is amazing! 350000km all in touring and desert nearly been everywhere in Aus and still going strong and had frontend rebuilt. Never want any other car.

    I have a 1FZFE and I am happy with how it goes. My mechanic suggests an XR6 turbo addition, which I am considering. He reckons more power and efficiency. Also, the distance to the moon varies and at its perigee it is only 356,500km away. Glaaaven.

    You hit it on the head with regard to how much diesel versions like the HD-FT/FTE can cost versus how much you can save on an FZ-FE model, especially with all the diesel guys doing their scornful best to drive down prices on the petrol version. I'm planning on a big trip round Australia next year and figure on about $10,000 - $12,000 in fuel costs for the 28,000km trip - or about 4 - 6km per litre, depending on the conditions and the expense of fuel in remote places - worse if the going gets really tough. In the final analysis it's considerably cheaper to go with the petrol engine when everything's added up, including the necessary cost of installing a long range tank. What I'll do with the vehicle when I get back I'm not sure, as it obviously isn't cheap to use as a daily driver. The only thing I'd say about your clip is that you basically gave short shrift to the pros and cons of the engines and spent a hell of a lot of time just running down the petrol versions for their fuel consumption - the diesels aren't THAT much better - you make them sound like the Prius! :)

    I think if you want a seriously powerful 80 series you have to do an engine swap, that's the thin end of the wedge, and then you end up with a turbocharged iron block LS: well if it's going to go turbo then you need to open the head and do valves at least, might as well do lifters while you're in there and throw in a cam, well if you're going to go to all that trouble why not do it on a better block, if you''re going to get a good block might as well do rods and pistons and upgrade the fuel system...

    Great little review, some of the questions mentioned here I actually asked myself “what am I using the car for, how many km’s will I do as a daily driver first and foremost etc”
    I picked up a great 93 petrol which for my needs and wants is more than enough. It may not do what some of its diesel cousins will do but chances are I wouldn’t do that kinda stuff anyhow. On the beach and some fun camping trips with the kids the Petrol 80 is perfect for it.
    I couldn’t justify spending upwards of 20k for an 80 of the same quality as mine.

    I had for a few years LC80 turbo diesel 1997 with a 5 speed manual 6” lift 38” tires and I was able to get 10 l/100 km on the cruise with the jeep fully loaded.The troubling things was the diff locks,3 of them and they don’t seem to last and costed 600 usd per unit 10 years ago.

    I got 13l to 100k off my 80 after a tune up last week . Getting 500+ to a tank now after removing lpg and re-tuning , new air filter and running premium as a treat as the fuel is so cheap right now . Running 33 Muddies and 2" lift 1993 FZJ80

      Sorry mate running premium fuel In 1FZ is nothing else but a placebo effect for your mind. These motors have absolutely not 1% of benefit from the higher RON fuel. Run 91 octane for the same effects but cheaper. They were not designed to benefit from higher RON fuels.

      It’s an old motor like they all are now but they do a good job for a long time. Main thing is remember they are not a racecar motor they are a truck motor.

    I have the 3rd world version with the (carburetor) 1fz-f and part time 4wd. Its quite heavy due to steel Bullbar, winch & big battery. Fully fuelled (165l) it weighs in @ 2400kg and I tow a 1500kg '4x4' caravan. When towing at 110 kph (my target speed) I get 20l /100 which will not too bad considering the weight and drag.
    One of the things against the 1fz is that it seems the head gasket is problematic - heard many stories and mine blew @ 240 000 and when I say blew, I mean explosively. While I climbing (towing up) a 2400m mountain pass I saw a blast of steam out of the exhaust followed by a shower of water on the windscreen.
    No way to go any further, so it went onto a tow truck. Damm that gasket is expensive!
    I specifically chose the carb version because you can't fix electronics with a screwdriver in the middle of nowhere and because the carb & fuel pump are much more tolerant of dirty fuel (quite common in Africa)

      Cool stuff. I've found the HG tends to go at around 350K mark but I have had them last well into the 400K mark. Mine weighs around 3T empty and then I load up and hook on the camper so up towards 4.5T is not uncommon. 20LPH is a good return.

      I also have the 1fz-f carb engine in a 75 series. Sometime the viscus fan gives up and causes overheating, but isn't evident when running as it still spins. Then blows the HG on number six cylinder. Lucky you didn't bend a rod. I also find on cooling systems that are neglected, the HG tends to fail sooner rather than later.
      I tend to agree with you about the carb being serviceable anywhere, it happened to me in the middle of the jungle from very bad fuel and a bad filter, you can always get it running again with basic tools. Only problem with the carb is once it ages, it becomes very finicky and the OVCV fails in the open position causing a vacuum leak.
      Stopped counting fuel economy a while ago, just figured it is the price you pay for owning one of the greatest vehicles ever built.

    I’m very surprised you’re getting under 200km for a full tank. Unless I misunderstood what you said.
    Lpg I’m getting just over 400km and petrol around 550km.
    1fzfe is a beautiful smooth motor. Rebuilt mine recently, one more tiny oil leak to chase and she’s all Mickey Mouse.

      So I’ve been talking to a bloke who lives in Rockingham (south of Perth) and has achieved 13.5L per 100km, whilst towing a horse float (country miles) by installing an aftermarket ecu and wideband 02 sensor.
      There seems to be merit in it because the knock sensors according to reading are pretty very conservative and overfuel the engine when it detects a vibration that is outside its limit.
      I’m thinking about going down this route with a Haltech setup otherwise dropping a 1HDFT in her.

      Yeah not sure that’s the way I’d go. A petrol auto would be the go imo. The petrols allow for the pop up to work way better than a diesel. Due to the quick acceleration.

    I am running a duel fuel and with both tanks I can get 700klm on tar and dirt roads, no towing. Fully kitted out with dual batteries and two lithium batteries in the back and a rooftop tent. Serious offroading no sand I can get around 500klm easy Melbourne to the highlands and back.

    look it is simple, 1HDT is a simple and reliable beast, it tends to be overlooked because they are usally old when tested today. I own a 79 with a 24 valve fte and an 80 1 HDT, recently I did a blueprint on the 1HDT rebuild to spec and this included full fuel including radiator the lot. Got to say the 80 with its original spec (3inch exhaust) is extraordinary, 11.7/100 and is a smooth drive. The FTE has the grunt but the top end is not as good, the non electric pump in the 80 is unbelievable, when the fte pump goes the vehicle is dead. Dont get me wrong horses for courses, the 79 I can put 2 ton on her and it is no problem, But the ride the capability of the 80 1HDT is beyong compare. and I can sell it for 3 times what I paid for it. As a automotive photographer for over 45 years I have driven them all all over the world and nothing gets close to an 80,
    sure no airbags, seats need to be changed to recaro, but they are simply the best thing in off road touring. Mine is getting its 500k make over, a nose to tail, and it is worth it. I am thinking of putting it in a container and touring Japan when done.

    hey Matt.. 96' fzj80 owner here from canada.. I think the 1FZFE engine has more than sufficient power and torque for any workload. The only vehicle upgrade i would do if i could - would be the 105 series (never sold in North America) .. Did the 105 lose any of the 80 series off road prowess ? What motor would you personally choose if you had to upgrade: HZJ105 or the FZJ105 ? ... Australia is spoilt for choices in the live axle 4x4 options space.. We can jus spectate on RUclips.. :(

      Hey mate. I love the fz and a 105 would be the only upgrade i would think of. Not for Offroad ability but just they are younger. The 80s getting old now. The only reason I’d go diesel is for long distance remote work which I’m not doing at this time.

    My dads 92 1HD-T smashed a Hole in the left side of the motor @ 385000 kms and sadly it was Babyed it's whole life and still did that. Severly Dissapointed in that motor. But their right about the 1HD-FT motor is the go cuse I got one.

    Definitely the 1HZ without a turbo. In stock from its super slow but it's not uncommon to see a stock non turbo IDI 1hz engine in Africa and Australia with more more 500 thousand kilometers. Buy an 80 series or 70 series land cruiser with the 1hz that's had oil changes and you keep doing the same, you'll find yourself getting past 1 million kilometer mark. I actually saw an LC80 series with 350 thousand kilometers in South Africa and it keeps on going. The owner said he'll never sell it cause it's that reliable. The 1hd-t and 1hd-fte you need to be more careful and watch out for other common issues and things like that.1

    Hmm my cruisers 1FZ-FE has done 340,000 and 2 massive $7000 repairs.. first was caused by LPG cracking the block, that was all good and done right but the second was about 5 years later, complete top end rebuild was apparently needed.. almost a year without any other issues ive found out that the mechanic swapped my new (year old) radiator with an old banger full of bogg and charged me for putting in a new fuel pump but didn't actually touch the old one, im no mechanic at all so i need to be able to trust who i take it to, now im unsure on what else the didn't do! Only noticed the radiator and fuel pump recently and its been a year or so since i had the work done. Cant really take it back and blast the mechanic now..

      Are you sure you have the right engine? i've never heard of the 1FZ-fe as a HG prone motor. Assuming it's kept in service. Mine has just had a HG done at 400000K and my first motor is now in a race car at 430000ks and never been touched.

    my father had own a 80 series with a 1hdt engine, and a land cruiser prado 70 but with a 1hdft engine. After i experienced those two engines, the 1hdt had more low end torque campare to 1hdft because that 1hdft i dont feel that low end torque, i am not gonna say that 1hdft is terrible, i think 1hdft engine's sound is super mint than the 1hdt. So my conclusion is if you want more low down torque, go for the 1hdt, but if you want more power, go for the 1hdft, that is based on my experienced.

    Thanks for the informative video. In the 1HD-T 12-valve turbo motor, if the bearing issue you mentioned wasnt fixed during the factory recall period, would it be an expensive fix nowadays ? After working on so many of these motors what would you say are the other major differences or downsides does the 1HD-T 12-valve have compared to the 1HD-FT 24-valve , reliability-wise, power & power band ? Thank you

      I don’t think the bearings would be expensive but the motors have so many ks on them now it wouldn’t really be a concern. They’re all excellent motors. The fz has more HP and Tourqe than the diesels.

    Hi Matt, I was attempting to determine what you were getting for gas mileage with gallons per mile (here in the States). Is your rig getting 11 or 12 mpg, then? I'm seeing 13 to 15 mpg on my 96 FZ80 - 15 on the road, 12-13 wheeling. It has 240k. It's running 33's with an OME suspension but pretty much stock otherwise. Is that pretty normal? I'm going to put some money into it but have been checking to see if that engine could easily continue on if it had been serviced regularly (it has).

      The fz motor is horrendously reliable and well known for getting high kilometres with proper servicing. I’ll let you do the math but basically you should get close to 20 liters for 100 kilometres sitting at 100 kilometers per hour. . There are so many variables to this but that’s a starting point. Overall do not buy this engine if you want economy. Best of going for smiles per mile.

    love my 1fzfe 5 manual. I'm also considering a new addition to the fleet a diesel 1HZ in manual but I'm worried the gearbox isn't as strong as the Turbo deisels and even my current 1fzfe is this true?

      Yes I believe the 1hz has the r series box which is a lighter duty box. But behind a 1hz it’ll work fine.

      Chiming in late..
      In 80 series the 1HZ has a near identical heavy duty gearbox to the petrol and turbo models. H150F. All the same insides, different input spline, lower first and second gear. In 105 series, the 1HZ models have the R150 gearbox which was also behind V6 and turbo diesel Hilux/4 runner/surf/bundera engines. It’s still a good box, and is still available brand new from Toyota for a not outrageous price.

    Hi Matt, I got a 105 series with 1fz-fe motor in it recently. Did an oil change with penrite 10w-40 mixed with a bottle of thick ‘compression fix’ in it and went on a trip. Have done about 250km high country off-roading (no trailer, used 130 litres of petrol lol) and 2000km highway driving. The engine burnt about 1.5 - 1.8 litres of oil when I came back. The engine has no strange noice, plenty of power. Do you think the engine got plenty life left in it? I’m planning to slowly put different 4WD mods on the truck, and rebuild the auto gearbox, but just don’t know if it worth investing in a 1fz that burn a bit oil.

      Hey mate. A few things to consider. Do a compression test this will tell you if the rings are good. 130 Liters for 250 ks in the VHC is fine and normal. I got 250 Ks out of 70 petrol and 90 lpg towing a camper. :) totota says these should have the head done at around 250ks and from what i've seen they start to burn oil after this through the valve stem seals. Both my fzs have done 400k +. my current one I've just done the head up at 400k my old one is untouched at 430k and is in a race car now. So if the compression is good i would suggest it's stem seals causing the burn and a head job is the fix. Usually around $2k depending on a few factors. These motors are designed for 1million ks before the first major rebuild. Like any motor keeping it cool is key so I like to keep under 100C no matter what i'm doing. So short answer It's worth investing in.

      One other thing is if you see oil smoke (light Blue) after a long idle and blip the throttle or on the over run this indicates stem seals.

      What a great channel! Super fast reply. Thanks Matt. I’ve done the compression test on it. Not when it’s in operating temp, had the car run for only 1 minute or 2 before removing the spark plugs. 4 cylinders are 150psi and the other two cylinders are 140 and 135psi. I think the numbers will be a bit better when the engine is hot. What do you think is the good cylinder pressure for 1fz?

      TechTick from memory 150 is spec and as you say once warm it’ll be perfect. Id suggest as expected the bottom end is in great condition. Thanks for the kind words as well

      Have a listen again and listen from the 1.40 second mark. You've heard him talking of the 1FZ-fe motor life.

    Used to have the 3f in the 60 series and for more power I put on a bigger carb and over sized pistons all because I needed more HP for towing because I could not afford a TD, horrible on fuel but when I'd put the foot down it would move like a stabbed rat. Now have got 2000 100 1HDFTE sad to have to compromise on the power but the bank says thanks. the The 60 is currently In a body shop getting the cancer sorted out, hopefully when done I can sell to the right person as a Highway Cruiser, car has only done 233,400

    New to your channel.
    I run a 70 series in the UK. ( An import model from Japan.)
    It comes with a 2.4 Diesel. I dream about the acceleration of a 1HZ!!!
    One day it will get a 4.2, probable a 1HD-T.
    I have thought about the 1HD-FTs but I think there is too much fancy electrics for me. Your advice would be gratefully received.

      Love the comparison that a 1 hzzzzz will be better. Lots of guys spend big money converting to the 1hd variants and love them but i do wonder if it’s over capitalising on an old truck. Of course if you’re going to keep it or have the money they’re a good motor.

      @@MadMatt4WD I intend to keep for as long as I can keep it going. Coils all round as standard and electric everything. All it lacks is a straight six. I have always wanted to rebuild and engine just for fun so I think the 2hd will be that engine.
      Very interested in your comment about the early 1hd's having a main bearing problem. That was my only concern, in the UK there is a rumor going around that you need to replace them every 100'000 miles. (160'000km)
      I found this strange and very un- LandCruiser. You have answered the riddle. If you know what years had a problem can you let me know and what the problem was.

    If you measure smiles per mile, then the petrol wins every time. A petrol 80 cannot be driven sensibly. It's not possible; in fact it may even be illegal to drive one sensibly. Once you press that pedal and feel 4500cc get up and go, it's only a matter of time before you need to send your licence away for some points to be added. They are superb. But, touring down the road at sitting at a steady 70 why burn twice as much cash? The diesel of course is also easier to waterproof. Well, you don't really need to. Unless you are a U boat captain, don't even fit a snorkel. Petrols though do cough and splutter if you cross a puddle. I think the engine is really not the way to pick an 80. The key with these old trucks is to find a decent one regardless and then just live with the engine that's in it. Manual, auto, petrol, diesel, nah, they're all 80's. I agree though the 105 is a great upgrade.

    at 7:21 you talk about a recall on HD-T motors, what is that recall for? i cannot make out exactly what you said...

      Sorry about that Raul. The very early ones had an issue with the big end bearings and they needed to be changed as part of a recall. I doubt it would be very relevant today with the age of the engines.

      I understand it was from the head engineer of Toyota but couldn't give you an authoritative link to the information. There are many of both the Diesels and Petrols with VERY high ks on them out there.

    I'm looking at a 60 that has a 2F 480,000km - aparently these are pretty good and reliable for an old petrol engine - would love a 12-HT Factory Turbo Diesel but these only came with the high roof/square headlight HJ61s? I want the low roof/round headlight

    Hi matt i just wanted to ask aaron a question. I want to swap out my 1hz motor out of my 105series an was wondering what motor between 1hdt or the 1hdft ? I plan on keeping the car for many years an i use it for a bit of everything

    What are the differences between the gasoline engines available in Australia, and the ones available in the United States? I'm having to convert liters to gallons, and kilometers to miles, and maybe my math is off, but in the US the gasoline engines available for the 80 series are rated 12-15 mpg. 100 km = 62.1 miles. So, at the worse gas mileage (12 mpg) we're using 5.2 gallons or 19.7 liters. So according to my calculations it could go 440 kms on less than one 25 gallon tank of gas. So these numbers seem way off. Mat said he needed two tanks, and 8 jerry cans (5 gallons each) to go 440 kilometers? What am I missing? What did I screw up?

      Ok I'm no good a math either so i'll stay clear of that. But my 1fz-fe get's 19lph on a good highway run Aaron get's 17LPH because he's turbo manual. So 440ks is about all we will get out of a tank of Petrol. Now I also run LPG GAS as a second fuel which gets about 22LPH on a good run.

    These guys are wrong, the best 80 series motor is a 6.6 Duramax or a 5.9 Cummins. I only say this because I've got a 6.6 Duramax in my 92 80 and a 5.9 Cummins 24 valve in my 97 lx450

    the petrols are great motors but dont service it every 15 thats no cool for a 1fz over 200,000 the normal amount of oil that it will use will mean its low for the last 5,000 probally. theres way more to this discussion then what can be put in a 12 min video

      Interesting thoughts thanks. I can add oil mid service if required and the 1fz-fe has a low oil warning light. My motors have all been well over the 200K when I've bought them. Now having said all that a 10K interval is preferred. And yes we could certainly talk a lot more about this subject.
