Learned something new today! I didn't realise the flat color on the bottom of mica casts was affected by the cold table it was setting on. I thought it was the powder settling to the bottom. If I let it set on a heated surface like a heat mat, maybe I'll get those swirls on the bottom of the cast? Nice vid:)

Great video. Thanks. How do you keep the mica powders from sinking over time as the deep pour resin cures?
They're an extremely light powder that is suspended into the epoxy. The WiseBond deep pour epoxy essentially gets solid (but still tacky) after 15 or so hours. They wouldn't have time to sink before that happens. We have seen issues with cheaper epoxies and colorants which is why we use and recommend the WiseBond product line of epoxy and colorants.

I plan to build an interior countertop out of 5" wide solid wood boards. The voids will be filled with colored epoxy. I was planning on using a spray-on spar urethane. How dull will it look? Would a water-based poly have a better look?
Spray on urethane or any finish for that matter will dull over time so ask yourself whatever finish you choose what would be the easiest to reapply over time when it needs to be redone. Water based poly generally for counter tops is not recommended because if it gets wet like most counter tops will you'll get white spots from the reaction with the water. Many people are using oil based food safe finishes such as Odies oil because it's easy to reapply when needed.
mica powder better than liquid mica ??
What did you use in your blue pigment to make the white streaks throughout the blue? Also what was the name of the blue pigment? I have a customer looking for some aggressive white streaks running through the blue pigment on her table. Suggestions to get that affect?
It's hard for us to know which table you are referencing, usually with the mica powder colorants they swirl as they cure. It's really an art if you want to try different techniques we always recommend trying smaller samples. You mentioned that the more heat the bigger the mica swirls. What would I do to get smaller tighter swirls? A colder room, maybe a refrigerator?
Colder would help but it would slow down the curing time so we wouldn't recommend a refrigerator but an air conditioned room could help.

hey , so i use mica on making a 1 inch thick keyboard wrist rest , and i've been having trouble whereby the mica sinks to the bottom causing the patterns to not appear , is there anyway to prevent this?
Switch your epoxy and your mica. It could be multiple issues either from your epoxy or your mica. We recommend WiseBond deep pour and all their colorants as they are made to work with the epoxy and will give you the nice swirls you are seeking.
If I’m putting a second coat of resin on a painting with mica in it, do I sand down the first coat?
It shouldn't be necessary but could help it adhere better if you did.
Is there a powder that is not a pearlscent, looking for just a plain red, blue green Ect that I can use in epoxy?
You can use WiseDye, which is a liquid colorant that mixes with epoxy. It makes solid opaque pigments with nice results.
That was some hard math, but I think 26 mg powder per oz should be right.
Would this work with a nitrocellulose based lacquer
We've never tried that so we would recommend trying it yourself on a small test piece if you want. Let us know if you do and if it works!
What about a bees wax coat by itself after pouring? Or do you need the clear coat?

How do you make those swirls like in that dark green design
It happens naturally with WiseBond Deep Pour epoxy. It's called an exothermic reaction. It happens during the curing process. The swirls are noticeable with any powdered colorant, not so much with the liquid colorants.
I'm going to need 3 gallons of deep pour epoxy for my project.... how many grams of mica will I need?
15 grams of mica powder for 3-gallons of epoxy
So if im doing a 3 gla pour I would need 10 grams of powder? Is that measured by weight?
That would be around the sweet spot. 5 grams of powder per 1.5 gallons. You can add more or less depending on what you're looking for. When you're mixing get a clear plastic cup and take some out hold it up to the light so you can really see what it looks like, instead of just looking at it in a dark bucket.

Is there a reason my mica would be collecting at the top and making weird bubble like designs? Am I using too much? I'm able to make them Disappear by stirring the epoxy, but as it settles they reappear
What you are seeing is most likely too much powder and air bubbles are bringing the mica particles to the top. Ideally, 15 grams of mica powder mixed into 3-gallons of epoxy gives a great effect.
I make bangles of resin here in India. How can I get these type of swirls in a bangle? How do I pour epoxy along with mica powder in a bangle mould to get these swirls?
The swirls come from the exothermic reaction from the epoxy mixing. You can then move the swirls around in your pour.
Do the swirls appear in water
Probably not, it's the epoxy and colorant mixture that gives you the swirling. The colorant would probably just sink in water.
Is mica infused epoxy food safe?
Once fully cured many are safe for contact. We wouldn't recommend cutting on them though as knives can score the epoxy and leave little particles of cured epoxy in your food.

just use stone coat epoxy can use spray paint with rustoem gloss paint
Using spray paint as a colorant tends to produce a less intense color and do not integrate well with the resin, leading to noticeable specks of color dispersed throughout the finished product. Also, its pretty flammable.

I need a non-water based, paste pigment for Durabak Polyurethane bed liner paint. It is NOT an Epoxy, but a Polyurethane. I don't know if i can use a powder pigment if that will work. I don't see why not. But Durabak keeps repeating the same thing over and over - NON-WATER BASED PASTE PIGMENT. What the heck is that? I see powder pigments everywhere and no paste pigments. Arrrgh!!@#%#%#~~!!
