  • Painting moulds can be tricky and messy if not done properly and mess up your finished project. I show 4 simple rules to achieve the perfect multi-colored resin casting using three different mica colors at once. You will see how to make your mica stick to your silicone mould, how to ensure it stays where it is, how to clean up any areas that are a bit messy and other tips and tricks. I will also show how I make the base for this mould adding value to the final piece. When I have a large mold to fill I like to put my past resin pieces that weren’t so great in the middle, if it’s a solid color of course. It saves on resin and gives use to the stuff that didn’t turn out. Marbles and tinfoil balls work well also.

  • @Glotglot

I was working q lot with mica powders and resin. I used to mix it in, just as any liquid colors. Then I got smart and started to use the mica powder on different surfaces in my molds. The difference was a wow factor much higher than expected, and the big plus was how much less mica I needed per piece.

The whole project is amazing, but I couldn't get my eyes off the beautiful scales of that snake. I envy you for the 3d printer, but I don't think I could fit it anywhere. I'm already using all available space in my home for a million different art and craft projects. 😄

Try you local library. 3 in Tulsa have one. We also have a Makers Space with all kinds of other tools like vinyl cutter, laser engraver, loom, cnc mill etc.
If they don't have one try to find a local Makers Space. They're around & might not cost much per month to use equipment.
Another idea is to find someone online who will print it off & mail to you for a fee.
Just some ideas in case you or someone else are actually serious about it. 😉😊

Great video as always Steve, just a suggestion based on my many years of 3d printing, best thing I've found for bed adhesion rather than glue sticks is a product called 3DLAC (aerosol version), very effective and a lot less messy than glue sticks.

That skull was really gorgeous Steve! The base was awesome too. Do you find that the 3D printer uses a lot of electricity at all? I always think these machines must cost a lot to run. I use a cotton swap or tiny piece of makeup sponge affixed to a tooth pick dipped in denatured alcohol to clean up the messy bits. You have to keep dipping and squeezing out the swab but it does clear it up quickly and very cleanly.

I love listening to you as you’re working . As person who feels a little idiocy with techy stuff; I’m worst now than ever, I’m
glad to find I’m not alone 😅. I’ve been up all night looking through molds, and all kinds of mica powders. And, during the day, I was working on how to use my Cricut Machine; it cuts, but nothing like a 3D printer. I do know I’m a Madd Hatter, however being up all night for crafting supplies maybe getting me into a bit of trouble. 😊Questions: Do you feel it’s necessary to get a particular mica powder. When using mica type powders, can you tap a brush with water to help it go on smoothly, then let it dry before your pour in your resin?

Hello Steve! It is because of you that I have started doing resin molding 🥰 thank you so much for your content.
I tried 2 simple heart molds to begin with, and I painted both with mica powder before pouring in the resin. I didn't use the mold release spray. I just went straight from the mica tin to the mold. My finished product came out poorly 😢 The mica did not set into the resin and wiped off when I ran my finger across the heart (not the whole thing, just the center area of the completed piece). What should I do differently next time?
