Thats actually a Mazda engine built under license from Perkins. Way more reliable. I bought one new and put almost 600,000 miles on it. The 84 Ive had the last 22 years still runs great but the impossibility of finding parts is almost making me want to sell it finally. When theyre in good shape they run well and are super reliable. The main problem swapping the engine is the gas firewall opening is smaller and the top two trans bolts on the diesel will hit the top of the firewall opening. Youre better off using the gas truck for the donor. The gas engines blow head gaskets. Ive never heard of the diesels cracking heads unless you overheat them. Ive never cracked or warped a head in all the years Ive driven them.
What is known as the S2 or 4.135 was based on Perkins's then-current 4.154, but then Mazda itself made it its own by shortening the 4.154's piston stroke length from 101.6 mm to 89 mm, while retaining the 88.9 mm cylinder bore. Eventually, Mazda would get the 4.154 for itself, renamed the XA, as well as make a larger 3.0L version called the 4.182 or HA, which was created by increasing the 4.154's cylinder bore from 88.9 mm to 95 mm and the piston stroke from 101.6 mm to 105 mm.
Not a Mazda, but my dad bought a Ford Ranger diesel brand new in 1985. It had a 2.3 liter Mitsubishi four cylinder turbo diesel engine. He had that little truck for over 20 years before he got a new one. It had over 400k miles. It was a great little truck.
I have several of these little trucks. Two 83 B2000s, and three 84 B2000s. Of the five, I daily one of 84s which has been completely unmolested and runs beautifully. One of my boys drives his static-dropped 83 dailly to college and work. It runs like a Singer sewing machine. I have another one which has been stored in the shop waiting for me to finish a V8 conversion. The last two are parts trucks which are about ready for the crusher because everything of worth has been removed. I love these things and wish parts were more readily available.
I swapped a 2.2 Perkins from a 83 into a 92 B2200 for my dad about 4-5 years ago now and it’s going strong ever since. We put a turbo on it from a 1.8t Golf mk4 and we have the pump upgraded to a turbo pump with a boost reference…makes about 20psi. It’s not fast by any means but the turbo give it some much needed torque and we have towed 3500lbs with the truck and it was doable. The engine is a little unit.
I had an 83 ranger with the 2.2 perkins. Sat for 11 years. All it needed was batteries and a fuel line then i daily drove it. Great fuel mileage. The injection pump is easy to tune for a little more power. And adding a lift pump really helps these things
My friends dad had one with that perkins new in Australia, badged as a Ford Courier. I think it was an 85 in sky blue. I drove it a couple of times, couldn't believe how slow it was. He loved it because it had a/c lol.

Your video brought back some great memories. I had an 1984 B2200 that I bought new. It was red with a white stripe, tan interior, and 5spd transmisson. Loved that little truck.
First truck was the gas cousin of that one, same year. That 5-speed transmission is 100% bullet proof. Driven a lot of manual trucks and that is still my favorite transmission. For most of the 80's the Ford Ranger used the same transmission. The other great thing is that as long as the frame is solid you can literally drive it for 700,000 miles with no body left.
Nice to see this ol Mazda getting some love. Right around 11:05 the audio level spikes up significantly, not sure if you use like audio leveling when you edit this all together, had to adjust a few times during the video. Otherwise keep cranking em out!

@@RealSteelFabrications I think the engine will outlive everything else. I sold mine with 250,000 miles and it ran great with no oil consumption or smoking. Mine had this issue and I changed all the bearings in the transmission. Mine was made in November 1983 so it was just before they fixed the problem.
Yeah I like the longbed better too and that diesel would be cool in it. My old man had a 86 B2000, it had the little 4 cylinder Hemi head gas engine in it, I don’t remember what liter it was but back in 06-07? we had to go to the junkyard and find another Mazda truck with the same engine and get the head off of it to put on the old man’s truck, he blowed the head gasket on his driving to my little brothers down in Etown Ky, instead of pulling over and shutting it off he figured he could make it to my brothers house, but ended up messing the head up, anyways yeah had to put another head on his, you talk about a job, man that was a pain changing the head. Dude, Huge mistake if you do swap engines, sell the gaser, with that money fix the misfit, diesel Mazda rarely known, rarely seen, to my believe, she should deserve to be restored and the history of rare wired diesel truck in American soil kept alive.
Hey, I dont know if this will apply to US trucks but theres a good chance it does. With the B1600 and B2200, the firewalls are different as the B2200 bellhousing is quite a bit larger, my Grandad did that swap on his back in the 90s and he ended up chopping out a big chunk of the firewall so the gearbox would fit. It went from being a flat shap above the gearbox to being a big rounded flare, although the B2200 firewall in reality just has the flat part up higher and has a bit of a notch for the starter to sit in. The transmissions crossmember and engine mounts are different too so theres a bit of work with a welder needed there to make that happen but its doable. He used the petrol crossmember and welded the mounts in the chassis, it sits slightly more forward than on a standard diesel but works fine.
Wow! Thanks a ton for this info. I need to do more research before doing it for sure. This helps a lot though, thanks again! Hope you enjoyed the video.

Thing ran good, had hot heat, and living in NY was junked due to rust probably before you were born lol
Do the swap. Been a diesel guy since I served on WWII submarines, restored two M-B diesel. Don't mimic JR Go, you won't burn tires, but you'll get job done cheaply. Change your filters and fluids regularly. Narragansett Bay
Still deciding. Thank you for your service!
Nice truck buddy -- good stuff
Thanks 👍
Swap sounds good! 👍
I think so too!
I think you should keep it the way it is and clean it up.
That’s the plan at first
Funny here in a land down under. Most aussie utes are only diesel its rare to see a gas ute ( truck )
Dang! Wish it was that way here in the states. Much more reliable than the gas engines.
Personally, I would do the drivetrain swap to the SR5. After a good shake down like you said.
Probably what will happen
You had me laughing when you said you had to go back and get the papers I thought this video was going to be another two hours getting up that hill
LOL! When i say this thing is slow, it is slowwwwwwwwwww
Your little asides are always entertaining. dunno where you come up with some of this but def original. (Floppier than your balls while doing jumping jacks) heh. that's a rare cool little diesel
Haha! Appreciate it as always. :)
My balls sure do flop when I do jumping jacks. It has been a while since I have done some. Thats why I quit. lol
Understand that lol
Dude, Huge mistake if you do swap engines, sell the gaser, with that money fix the misfit, diesel Mazda rarely known, rarely seen, to my believe, she should deserve to be restored and the history of rare wired diesel truck in American soil kept alive.
After some thought I will be cleaning up the diesel to see it’s full potential
You’re hilarious and dangerous. Dangerous and hilarious. 😂. My wife and I love your channel! Stay safe dog.
Let’s just say a 2 minute drill was not done prior to unloading… made for good content though lol. Thanks for checking it out!
Lmao ur commentary thru out the vid is funny as hell! Keep the diesel too! Fix it up! Keep up the content! Thanks!
Thanks! Will do!
@@RealSteelFabrications sure did good luck with the trucks!
@@Jakanddaxter1999 appreciate it!
This is badass
Appreciate it!
My first truck was one of these had nikki carb with a glass bowl always thought that was cool mine was black with white graphics tan interior
My 83' SE-5 has the Nikki carb as well. They sure are neat seeing the gas fill the bowl.
Yes. The diesel is col. But go and fine your self a smal turbo ane hock that up to it. The enging can take it if you dont put to mutch bust on it. Sorry for my bad english
How hard would it be too put a turbo on it?
Where did you grab this in Missouri? I also have a b2200 diesel and im in Missouri
Down by Owensville
@@RealSteelFabricationsI'm definitely interested in getting in touch about some parts and pieces potentially!
@@gavinmosher7362 as of now, the drivetrain isn’t for sale but if you need body/ interior stuff let me know
@@RealSteelFabrications I am just about 3 hours from Owensville I'm in the southwest corner. I also may have some parts and pieces you may be interested in as well
@@RealSteelFabricationsnot sure how to get ahold of you other than Facebook messages or text but I am definitely looking for a few interior pieces and also body stuff.
Do you guys live in Missouri?
Yep
Sounds like my 135 mf tractor couple of my friends had those the only 2 in our areaa also a few ford ranger diesels too
Say they’re pretty rare. The rangers are cool as well!
Love from morocoo ❤ have a nice day.
Wow! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed it.
It's pretty weird for me to see those chubby oil cans.
We work with 5L ones all day every day.
(1.32 Us Gal)
That startup was impressive and shockingly easy.
I would love to see one of these with a mitsubishi engine. (I work on Mitsubishis and have an affinity for them).
21:05 Why the heck would you need a transmission cooler for a manual?
That perkins sounds gutless as heck.
It’s very underpowered! I wish I could find a Mitsubishi one, these diesel trucks are very hard to come by though.
@RealSteelFabrications I can imagine, same case in my country but all those trucks are getting hard to find (even petrol ones), or the ones you find are just beat up or worn out.
Though "mini trucks" never went away for us. But the old school look is something I like.
Do it, interchange those motors
Love watching you struggle 🤣
Rudeeeee lol
What part of Missouri did you go to?
Owensville
❤mazda. B 1600
Yep!
I would fix both trucks. That diesel is too nice to tear apart.. watch Robert breaker
Will do
Still can’t believe i sold him parts and get to see proof that the parts went to good use
What parts?
Oil and filters at south store in Columbia
this things awsome
Appreciate it!
Too late now but mine has a gas tank lid poper under the driver seat
Ahh dang, I will have to see if mine has that
Puddinsfabshop loves these trucks
He sure does!
I want this when youre done with it.
Might never sell it…
Do you have one currently?
I got one I’m selling I’m in Florida it runs great needs a little work to be perfect
Definitely swap her, the gas one has a way cleaner body
It is for sure!
I have a 1979 ford courier with that 2.0 engine please let me know if you won’t too sell it I need a motor thanks
Will do. Where are you located?
@@RealSteelFabrications Newnan Georgia the home of Allan Jackson the motor I have is wore out smokes very bad. Can’t hardly find parts for it.
Fix both of them and have a pair.
Might be the best option
Maybe remove the diesel engine from this "new" one and turn it into a 4-cylinder generator, and the remaining parts will be spares for this long version(?)
It’s to cool to use for anything other than a truck
Yeah I got one...Wouldn't pull a teenager of your sister....but indestructible. My father passed away and his '82 B2200 sat behind the workshop for 7 years. Threw a battery at it and away she went!
Thanks for sharing. Do you drive yours much?
Please fix up the diesel.
Will clean it up a bit and see how she looks
Engine swap!!
Maybe…
I don't get why people like short bed trucks either.
I like them depending on the truck
Maybe rare in America
It is in the states for sure!
15w40 is tractor oil would it not be 10w40
Diesel oil is diesel oil. They make several weights
@@RealSteelFabrications ya but 15w40 is tractor oil any new diesel is 5w30 or 5w40
I hate dealing with ppl like that or if it's free bc you don't know if they lieing. Or the ppl that say they will give you the address the day you come makes no sense
I agree. I was driving towards the town and didn’t know where to go. Then he gave me an address that still wasn’t right.
@@RealSteelFabrications it's so sad really I always make sure to take a second person with phone ready and a self defense machine. Stay safe can't wait for move videos. And I'd go with a engine. Swoop in the 2 trucks and fix the other one
@@dakotak8437 ya I shared my location with my dad before I got to where I needed to go in case the dude killed me lol. We might do the engine swap!
@@RealSteelFabrications still gatta becare with even a location drop might not be there really place and they wouldn't have anything to go on. Can't wait for video
well its not rare in iran
also it is still producing in iran even in crew cab style
Ohhh awesome! Wish we had them here. They’re even diesel?
Is that the same isuzu pup diesel engine?
They’re a little different.
40hp but got 45mpg
Very true
try cleaning the diesel one
I think I’m going to! Might surprise us after cleaning it. Wheels would make a big difference.
Fixs it
That’s the plan
Fix up the diesel
Will do
