Yes! I just discovered through this video that I apply makeup in French style lol.
The only difference is I use a soft brown liner rather than black (black is too harsh on me), and lower lashes get mascara only at the outer edge--not all the way across, because it creates shadows & darkness under the eyes---not good for older women.

I live in America. I agree with you. I can't stand this "modern American technique". The French women know what a sexy woman is...classic, effortless, less is more, enhance one's own real beauty, and not plaster on layers of makeup until you have an unrecognizable mask on. 😑 Vintage American beauty was the way the French still do their makeup.

As a young French woman raised by a parisian fashionista, i can tell you that my mother always told me to use makeup to enhance my beauty not to hide it. To not use use too much coverage on my skin because my skin look human not perfect and a pimple and texture would never ruin my beauty. To learn how to enhance my eyes ( i have hooded eyes unlike the rest of my family and they always been a complex of mine ) and not to change their natural shape. Use makeup juste to show the beauty of your natural features not to change your face, you are already gorgeous, use makeup to let the world see your beautiful face and to gain confidence not to look like a different person.

Americans should have more national pride on such matters. The lady was not fair, you shouldn’t clap her. -I speak both French and English and I’m not American or French and I don’t live in US or France.
US might be the only country where French women are known for beauty or beauty skills. I don’t know how come ALL French women use a high end brand like Guerlain all the time? The lady literally was not fair. American hair & American makup is M U C H better than French makeup & hair. Can’t tell the same for fashion sense & fragrances though. But for beauty? Deffo American.
PS. I often think that French women invest in fashion & fragrances so much because they’re not much blessed with natural beauty and good makeuo skills. I was very into France during the years of learnibg French, nonse of this lady’s claims are accurate. She only speaks for top class French women. But she unfairly compares top class French to Kardashians who represent more of a ghetto, lower-mid class Americans or just teenager girls. I always found Manhattan women very classy, independent looking, chic.
Comparison was so so so unfair.

The Kardashians had a major influence, but American makeup culture isn't defined by theirs or any one single aesthetic. Makeup is big business in the US and there's both a positive and negative side to it. The negative, of course, is pressure placed on people (mainly women) to look "flawless" and reach some unattainable standard. The positive side is a fun celebration of makeup as an outlet for creativity. Let's stop acting like any one philosophy on makeup is better than another.

@@theprousteffect9717 Guess you missed my point. You should read again to see my emphasis.
French people often sell the image of perfect, fashionable, elite, luxurious, expensive image of France and French but reality is drastically different. Paris is a filthy and unsafe city and Parisians.. Well, you should see them yourself. The rest of France is much better than Paris.
The lady (She’s a proud Parisian from Romania) literally said “All French women use this” for Guerlain bronzer 🤣 And portrayed Kardashian makeup (Which I don’t like. I think Kardashian fashion is subculture) to represent American, top tier French makeup as French. Suspicious. Especially when elite & rich of France often prefer US to live instead of France.

I'm from the US, and I personally strongly dislike our way of applying makeup nowadays. I used to apply makeup that way when I was in high school, but it is atrocious. When I completed aesthetics training in the 2000s they hammered home that contour is for photo shoots ONLY. While being ultra nice, you hammered the concept home - the American side will make you look flawless in every *photo.* Yes - because that quantity of makeup is designed for theater, film, and photo shoots! I understand why it's popular - when everyone lives and connects and expresses themselves via social media and photographs, *of course* they'd want to look good in pictures. But I vastly prefer what you called the French look. It feels more honest and looks much more natural in person. Plus it takes so much less time to apply - I've got stuff to do!

I never realized French women did it so differently so this was super interesting to watch! I think you’re spot on with how American women on social media do their make up for sure. But I would say the average American doesn’t actually do that, we use a lot less of the products because we think most of it is just marketing to sell more products. Also one of my biggest fears is looking cakey so I tend to use more natural looking foundations and I don’t use concealer or eyeliner and I don’t contour but I do use bronzer and blush. I would say I am between the two styles you did when I’m doing my average daily make up ☺️

Both sides look amazing though and I love doing my makeup in both ways….for different events. However, for me, the French attitude to how you look and age is so much healthier than the US one. When I watch makeup tutorials, all I think is how I know I won't do any of the techniques or buy any of the products mentioned. I didn't realize that I was naturally doing something closer to a French style of makeup -- including using my fingers instead of brushes. I will look for French inspired makeup tutorials.

Yeah, exactly. I look around in the US a lot. In the 28 states I've visited and the 2 of my citizenship FL and CA. Most women just don't wear make up, or they wear such a light make up that you can't tell they are wearing anything at all. In CA, I see people wear the Kardashian look when they are taking selfies or might be posted on the internet. There's a false internet look. Walking around, it's a messy and natural look or a casual and natural look that I see the most.

I haven't seen it in everyday makeup though. I think it also depends on the city you live in. NY or LA are much more glamorous, but if you move away from big cities, classic and simple styles (like the french one) tend to show more. i feel like the French side is kinda like the lazy side. Not that I'm calling the French lazy. Or maybe it could be compared to the 90s? Just way less product overall, makeup as enhancement not total transformation.
i feel like digital culture has produced really alienating online trends where literally everything looks so artificial. I've never been amazing with applying makeup but i just find those scenarios where someone looks totally unlike themselves uncanny, like even if it's an improvement, it feels like it would be too hard to take your makeup off without people doing a massive double take.
i just like it if makeup is fun and a bit of a pick me up and a compliment to one's own style. For me in the thumbnail what's weirding me out is that the eyes look like they're totally different sizes. I think both sides look good, the American side looks more glam, with a bigger and more laboriously detailed eye and deeper cheek contour. But the French side perhaps looks closer to the natural face? And there's something to be said for that. These days I wouldn't glam up like the right unless i was going to an event. i think for me the fun of makeup gets taken out of it if it takes too long to put on and maintain, and i live in a hot climate where things melt easily.
But i guess if you were really good at slapping on the glam, maybe you'd think less of using it for the everyday. For me the side on the right is just not an everyday daytime look. Not because it looks bad, it's just too much, daytime is more casual and the light is more intense, whereas lower light environments favour bolder looks to stand out.

Spanish here and I was thinking the same, most women go for the natural looking make up, they don't even need bronzer as they are naturally tan from the sun so there's even less need to put foundation.. and I don't see them wearing bold eyeshadow either, I do wear a lot of eyeshadow though because it's my favourite part of make up 😋 interesting video!

Love this! As a 50-something American (with European roots) I tend to go for the more natural FRENCH side in almost every point you made. As a teen in the 80's we played with heavy makeup for FUN - not for everyday out. Makeup was meant to enhance your natural beauty - not create a KABUKI mask. I never do a BOLD eye WITH a bold or red lip. Always one or the other. I prefer to use the minimal products necessary, never remember to do my eyebrows, never use blush, and ALWAYS use mascara! I was astounded by how MANY products you were using for the American side! And I totally agree - the American look is a reflection of mass-marketing and consumerism. Too much.

      *What is the Gospel?*
The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
      Ephesians 2:8-9
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
      Romans 10:9
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
      JESUS CHRIST can come anytime!

Hi! I'm Italian. I'd say Italian make up is much more similar to the French style - however, if you go to bigger cities like Milan it's not uncommon to find people with more make up on, even though I don't think most people would go to the lenght of American make up, maybe just a blend of the two styles, or a very simple make up with the exception of a fancy eyeliner or lipstick. But yeah, most people just follow the French style (I'd rather call it "European style", with the exceptions of the UK I haven't seen a place in Europe where so much make up is popular. And the UK is not in the European Union anymore, soooo I guess it doesn't count).

  • @FrenchLib
    @FrenchLib 2 года назад +86

I'm a French man living in America and found this very interesting to watch.
I like the insistance on "there is no right or wrong" because these things depend so much on culture and personal tastes.
It's funny to consider this from a historical point of view: makeup in Europe started in the 16th century, and was used by both men and women of the aristocracy. By the 18th century, makeup was particularly heavy (though, if you ever look closely at the painted portraits of the time, faces don't look like heavily painted at all, so someone may have to help me on that contradiction: according to makeup history, they would literally plaster their faces with tons of white ("l'emplâtre") and then lots of rouge, but when you look at the portraits, what you see is always very natural, elegant and tasty-looking according to our 21st century standards. Somebody? any idea on that divergence between what you can read about makeup history and what you can see on painted portraits?).
Anyway, during the 19th century, makeup became more and more discreet, and stopped being used by men. So much so that a reversal in perception happened: after being the privilege of aristocracy, heavy makeup became a sign of bad taste and of vulgarity.
During the 20th century, too much jewelry and too much makeup (if any at all) was associated with vulgarity and even prostitutes in Europe. Look at how the young royal and noble girls look in UK today: basically zero jewelry, zero makeup.
My French mother was raised in that spirit, and if she had been caught by her mother with makeup on as a teenage, she would have been slapped and severely punished. "Une femme peinte" (a painted woman) was code meaning a woman trying to sell her charms...
For example, having been raised in that culture and with these stereotypes, when I look at the female news anchors on American TV Chanels, my first reflex is to be shocked at how overdone their hair and make up are, which to me, again on a more or less unconscious level, says more "luxury prostitution" than "news anchor".
When I look at someone like Kim Kardashian, it's a completely different feel, because she's a fashion icon, or look icon, and her job is basically to use her body as a canvass for whatever creation she and her collaborators might come up with. In a way, she is like the Marie-Antoinette of today, and her status clearly places her outside of society (as in "above the rest", actually :-D) therefore she cannot be judged by normal standards. Same thing for movie stars, to some extent.
I think the 'star system" is much less powerful in France and French women don't try to look like movie stars (hell: movie stars themselves don't try to look like movie stars! :-D).
Above all, the strong concern about looking overdone, unnatural, or painted (as a show girl, as a prostitute would be, in the world of symbolic representations) is at the bottom of French women's very light approach to makeup.
Finally there is this notion that things should not look like the result of heavy work, but effortless, like they happened spontaneously. That aspect is a huge component in French understanding of elegance today. Look at a woman like Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg): she hardly ever has a trace of makeup on her face, yet if you run into her, the way she moves, the clothes she wears, will make you feel like she's the epitome of elegance.

Love your description with historical details thank you! And, having been raised in Europe I agree with the: It should look natural, effortless, otherwise it’s hooker attitude- Exception could be a glamorous evening event where a painted look would be appropriate. But never ever in daytime or normal evenings. Men don’t like the overly done up look here at all, they’re rather appalled by it if it’s too artificial.

@@FuxiaSue Thank you for your answer Anima Artis! I feel the same way as you do, but at the same time, this is a different experience: for years I worked in an office that was right next to the Bristol, a palace on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré. A place where movie stars and billionaires go. With that kind of money, you get to see the most expensive female escorts on ... Earth basically! BUT: even though you can tell it took them many hours to do their hair, makeup and outfits, clearly with help from professionals, they look totally stunning, the same way a movie star would. I'm French, I live abroad, I had an American partner for 15 years who realised that I was getting influence by the US consumerism and had a lot to say about what I applied on myself as he worried about my health. I started wearing make up at 44, after seeing my reflection in the mirror one early morning and I decided I looked like what the Scots call death warmed up. I have been greatly influence by American 1930/40ies/50 culture. So i wear make up in a mix of cultural back ground. but I apply my make up when in the morning I have taken a good look at myself, tired or dry skin, rosy cheeks, dark circles are all taken into account, included that pump up feeling you get if when hydrated. Clothes and accessories for me as a French woman are more important and good to excellent footwear. A healthy skin, nails and hair, good posture. UK ladies don't wear any make up, usually but some parts of the UK are fab and will not step outside, even if they are popping out for some milk. London is in for style and Leeds, Glasgow in Scotland is the place for the made up look and in style. In Edinburgh only the younger generations 16 to late 20ies usually take the time.

As an American I would say this video is very accurate! I laughed when you applied the bronzer at the end- because you can't forget that! Of all things! ;) This is actually very comforting to me, because growing up my mother's generation didn't use a lot of makeup. I taught myself through RUclips videos, and since I was on the dance team I learned further how to do my hair, eye shadow, eyeliner, fake eyelashes, lipstick, and had a lot of practice! The American makeup style is just that- it's very heavy, like costume and performance makeup. I have sensitive skin and have always preferred to use less, but was under the impression I was doing it wrong if I didn't apply the full face. I love the French concept that you have a statement lip OR eye, but not both. Here in America, if you put on eyeshadow it is an automatic requirement you add eyeliner, as well as a lip color. And bronzer! Always bronzer!
I think it can be said the French culture is much healthier than American in terms of insecurities and body image (maybe?), since you mentioned they enjoy seeing their own faces in the mirror! Thank you for bringing to my attention there is not a "wrong way." Lovely video, thank you!

This video was so satisfying for me to watch! I completely embrace the French approach (except I always use sunscreen!), but I’ve always felt like using less makeup (aka or not seeking influencer level perfection) made me un-feminine. Thank you for making this video to respectfully juxtapose these perspectives.

You are so funny! Interestingly I used to wear my makeup more like the French side, that is until social media came along. I’m in the US. Now I have so much makeup I don’t know what to with it, so many choices. But I love all of it. What I have noticed though is I enjoy putting on makeup, it’s a creative outlet and it’s almost a meditative activity. This was a great video and has inspired me to go back to how I used to do makeup, once in awhile, not all the time. ☺️

I’m Indian and I realised I apply my makeup a lot more like the French from the no foundation/ highlighter to using powder to look less oily. Except I loveee my blush and nude lipstick, I don’t leave home without them. This was very fun to watch Andrea. You never fail to deliver! 🥰🤍💜🤍💜🤍

I'm American and wear very little make up, especially as I grow older. Even the eyeliner on the French eye is a bit much for me. I never ever wear anything that glitters. Your tutorials have been very helpful!

I live in the US and appreciate the French make-up tutorial. I don't use a lot of make-up and was considering changing my make-up routine (social pressure maybe). Now, I think I'll stick to the French tutorial... ❤️ Thank you.

Love the breezy French look. For me the flawless American look is too time consuming and takes too many products. I've always done more of a French makeup look but lately I have started wanting to play more with highlighters and contour so I appreciate your demonstration on how to use it. Fun video. Thanks.

Yes - American here - in the 80s we didn't apply as much product (but we had some bright stuff!). I might go all out for a special night out but keep it simple, who has that much time. I'm so glad the nude lip is coming back in (90s!). I'm more of the french side with a nude full lip. ;-)

if you go to france or italy and ask what the breed of produce is, what kind of tomato or strawberry or so on, people generally know the answer. when you are in the uk or usa, they dont know the answer.

it's better that any "foundation" that looks awful unless you are in front of a camera or on stage. And for us, French, Italians are "painted like stollen cars" ;-)

Oh the tan! I'm from Australia, so we get so much information about sun damage. When I went to Italy, they would say it was fine because the sun wasn't as strong. True, we're closer to the sun during our summer, but sun damage is sun damage! The skin becomes tanned because of sun damage - but they didn't want to listen or give up their tan!🤷🏻‍♀️

I really like the French side because looks like the type of makeup I usually wear on a everyday look. I’m European and for me less is more not only that I’m not great at applying makeup 😁
