  • I LOVE playing Catan! But in order to keep it interesting we have added house rules to help the game stay spicy. Maybe these are a few rules you would be interested in adding. #catan #houserules #catanuniverse #boardgames #boardgaming

We always use the expansion set board and have added 5 double victory point cards. If you have 3 settlements or cities on the same type of resource, you can become the Mason, Miller, Blacksmith, Shepherd, or Carpenter. Each of these obviously tie in to the resource and gives you 2 VP. Also, increase the points to win to 15. They can also be stolen just like longest road, or largest army.

We to use a bridge. We have one 3 road length bridge piece. We don’t allow it to count toward extra for longest road.
Our biggest and we think best house rule upgrade is adding coin to the game.
The red die determines the value of coin received on a players turn. They trade at 4:1 with the bank or whatever you can negotiate with the other players. When the hoard attacks everyone looses their accumulated coin.

Can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I understand that when someone initially steals the longest road they get those two points plus an additional two for victory points.
What happens when someone steals the longest road from the second person that originally stole it? Does the second person keep their two victory points or do they lose all four?

Two additional victory points are not given in addition to the ones given by having the longest road. It’s just 2 points for having the longest road. That’s it. So if I have the longest road and you build one extra road than I do and take the longest road from me then I lose 2 points and you gain 2 points. If you lose longest road to me or anyone else playing then you lose two points and that person then gains the two points you lost.

Love catan think it's a great game and agree it can become a little repetitive after a few plays as the gameplay stagnates into 'build another settlement, build another city' which is further stymied by the small map.
However all of these home rules seem to make the game easier and ultimately come across like they were written by a parent with 2 kids who argue during the game

Rule 11: if its 3 roads, shouldnt it be 3 wood and 3 brick?

Yes you are correct! I had a brain fart and was thinking of House Rule 12 at the same time which is double the cost. Good catch!

@@ClashTipsPod A great video nonetheless. Are you planning a part 2?

Not immediately for Catan although maybe I’ll find some more ways to play :-) Finished one on Ticket to Ride a week or two ago.
