ok, maybe should have been "9 tips for beginners..." really basic stuff. some more important tactics are like -blocking 1 player instead of multiple, that way you have far higher chance that the robber will stay there because only one person will be trying to move it, and if someone else rolls 7 they wont block you out of revenge. -dont take longest road too early because its 2 points that will draw a lot of attention (and the robber) to you early in the game, and dont make it part of your strategy. -always secure good wheat flow its the most important resource, and never go into a game without being able to build cities, cities and dev cards are what the games about, people cant take your vp cards or points for building cities away like they can army or road. -small tip to try and do but dont jeopardize your strategy is, if you can, make your second placement on a wood+brick so that you can build a road on your first turn in case you and another player placed intersecting roads to start the game with the same idea of where to go.
Hey Aaron, you're right. This video contains the least advanced tips of my videos. My goal was to make a video with tips that can be applied to every single game, but it turned out that most advanced tips are a bit more situational.
Bro! I wish I had found this when I was a beginner. It took me awhile to figure out these tips through gameplay. Great video! The negotiation phrases are a great tip...I’m always too aggressive and it makes people rob me for fun lol. Gonna try being more subtle next time.
Hi Bryant! I'm glad you like the tips. Being subtle can be really difficult, what's important here is that make the other person think it was their own idea, so your table-talk can't back-fire
Treeckosaurus Gaming update: your tip about not being afraid to hold cards has won me the past 2 games. I’ve been playing often and losing for about a month now. Always diversifying numbers and with solid gameplay. I just never considered buying d-cards or trading to stay under 7 cards as abandoning my game plan, but since I’ve been holding more cards I’ve been winning. The robber isn’t as scary as I thought lol Thanks again!!!
Thank you DylLighted :) That is true! I think the most of any videos so far, unless you'd count the time in setting up King of Catan, for the announcement videos, of course.
@L. A. I guess if want to look at it that way you could. I prefer to look from the perspective of building a community together, and he’s my teammate :).
I won my last game by starting on the 11/12 spot. Why? Because they both had ore, and the only other ore was a 3 on the other side of the board. So all I had to do, was to keep putting the robber on that 3, and nobody could get ore (except the player who was smart enough to take one of the other spots on the 11 at the start). My other starting spot was a good double brick and wheat position, from which I could quickly extend to a lumber on a 6. This gave me all I needed. For most of the game, I had no access to wool, but that didn't matter because I soon took the brick port on my 11.
I keep forgetting to 'use logic'. Thanks for the game plan. I can finally beat my family into submission in Catan. Truly our brothers' keeper and finder of lost children
Same here. Used to play on purely impuls and emotion. Now that i use logic, my games are getting better. I'm now also able to solve basic math equations.
I'm glad to see my beginner's advice creates some connections. I agree the advice of "use logic" was poorly worded and barely value-adding. In my defense, I just see way too many players Brick-Ore-Sheep strategies or go for army without Ore and Wheat. That's what I wanted to point out. For advanced players, the "use logic" advice is redundant.
Hi Aleksa! It happens. In every setting there are different values and people respond differently in different situations. My advice is to make it more subtle. Instead of: "You need to rob Blue, because he has the strongest game-plan and a lot of [resource] in hand". You could say: "I think [the resource the other person has] is really valuable right now". People often dislike it when someone makes a decision for them, but with this set-up, you make it look like they came up with it themselves.
Statically speaking, 6 and 8 will be rolled the most. But of course there are exceptions .. and I don't think it wasn't rolled not even a single time, you definitely exaggerating
Tip 10: play with the expansion cities and knights (not sure if that is translated correctly) Its way more fun with that. For tip 6, the table talk. We have a rule not to influence the other players by doing that.
@@Treeckosaurus We had some huge fights about players trying to influence others so thats why we banned it. Seafarers is nice aswell but it doesnt expand the base game that much imo. Cities and Knights, combined with seafarers then we're talking ^^
my strat for catan is to start near the harbor of either 2 wheat per any resource or 2 sheeo per any resource (wood and bricks are good for roads.) from there build a house at a monster or a wheat/sheep farm and hopefully have access to wood and brick (ore comes later.) from there speedbuild to get tons of that one resource and build a house at the correct harbor and just cash those resources. From there make tons of houses, get longest road, then buy tons of development cards/make cities (depends on how u wanna do it.) Then u can start trading ppl ore for 3-4 sheep/wheat 🤑
Sounds like a good and fun strategy! It makes me think of a port-strategy, but it might be a bit different. I don't recommend using the same strategy every game though. Experimenting is fun too and not every board is great for the same strategy every time.
One tip that help me win Depend on the map If there are 2 of the same resources near thier port of 2-1 You want ro build there Like in your map 2 sheeps near thier port 2-1 Yea 4 and 11 not so good But if it was like 10 and 5 u should really build thier first
It can certainly work. You're talking about a port-strategy! They're very strong, especially against strong players. Against weak players, they tend to get blocked a lot.
Thanks, helpful. The original quote is “the power in any relationship lies with the one who needs it less” (Nicolas Machiavelo). Don’t think the Einstein quote is authentic.
0:35 The stars supposedly represent the number of times they are likely to be rolled out of 36 (6x6). But there's loopholes with this since some rolls are rated higher than they should be. For example, a 2 is just as likely to roll as a 3 from 2 dice: 1,1 and 1,2 are the only combinations. So both are equal in likeliness to get rolled but the 3 and 11 are rated higher. This same thing happens with 4/10 and 5/9.
1+1 is supposed to count as 1/36, while 2+1 also includes 1+2. It's weird, I know. I had some math teachers confirm this before replying. The stars in this video are accurate.
You are more likely to roll a 3 than a 2. Consider two dice, let's say dice A and dice B. To get a 2 both A and B must land on one. That's a 1/36 chance. However to get a 3 you can have A=1,B=2 or A=2,B=1 That is a 2/36 chance.
Of course. The assumption is the table is cursed, but people who look further recognize, it's the dice. Not the physical version of the dice, but what the dice means. Some people pray to the dice gods, but the dice gods reward those who study probability and practice gratitude. Hope this helps. In case the table is indeed cursed, I would buy a new table :)
I said "low ore boards". I mean that one boards with low ore, ports become the best way to generate ore. Ore is needed for cities and on low ore boards, the one who gets the first city is often the player who wins the game.
Hi Timbuds! The official rule is to play with numbers open, so the online games are made this way as well. At home we've played with face down numbers for quite some time. My personal preference is open numbers, what is yours?
We play with #'s face down, and even HEXES face down for at least ONE game of our play date, so everything is random!
