When I read Jetmir the first time, it went completely over my head to play him like a Craterhoof-esque card. I was so down on him, thinking you play him like a normal commander, getting him out early and building with the intent of keeping him on-board. This video completely turned my tune on this guy, I can see why he's off to the races in popularity.
I've heard people call Jetmir boring since his play pattern is so linear, but I would like to just say that there's nothing wrong with that! Simple, effective strategies are great for new players, and fun is subjective. Personally I love Jetmir, and if you build him right, he can actually be one of the more interactive Naya commanders out there. I run a ton of instants in my Jetmir deck (16-20) and I tend to hold up mana a lot. Usually it's with one of the instant speed token makers, but I also pack a healthy amount of interaction just in case I need to respond to threats. Board wipe? Cool, boros charm. Hitting me for lethal? Arachnogenesis. Big creature? Swords. Combo going off? Tibalt's trickery. If none of that happens, I can dump all that mana into making a bunch of tokens and hopefully win the next turn. I feel like I have a ton of options in my Jetmir deck, and it's super fun to pilot. I also think there's merit to having commanders that aren't super flashy and just say "Hey, here's 50 dudes. Deal with it or die."
The price difference between the first and second lists is astonishing. The deck looks sweet, definitely one I will be thinking about the next time I'm in the market for something new
My Jetmir list is far from budget, but even with a budget list, Jetmir is by far the most fun naya list ive played ever! People really get punched hard out of nowhere , killing them in 1 turn, its just to much fun!
Good stuff Joey! I think the grieves need to stay, the haste is amazing for things like Hanweir Garrison and it does force you opponent to use the removal on jetmir before you make an unfavorable attack. Also, him swinging is 16 commander damage. It's also really nice to protect things like tendershoot which need time on the board to make an impact
I build a Jinnie fae deck because it looks less scary in the command zone but the jetmir is absolutely the finisher. I tutor for skull clamp and make dogs and not cats so I can clamp the dogs and draw cards to get to my finishers. I also went with a landfall sub theme
I think Jinnie Fay is great for a Jetmir deck because she can turn any 1/1’s into 2/2’s with haste. That’s way more aggressive, giving immediate attack opportunities upon making a slew of tokens.
The mana curve in this version seems massive. Considering much of our ramp is creature based, that seems to make us even more vulnerable for a turn 3-5 Deluge.
It's a decently low curve, actually. The curve is sitting at 3.1, which could certainly be trimmed a bit but there are only 12 cards that are 5 cmc or greater, which isn't that bad. My current list is sitting even lower at 2.9, and it tends to be pretty fast. And I mean yeah board wipes are bad for creature decks for sure. We do have some rocks and land ramp as well for resiliency though, so it's not a huge issue.
I totally brewed up the lands matter version of Jetmir when he was spoiled still waiting on some cards to put it together but it seems like a lot of fun. I also like having a backup winncon.
Yeah I'm leaning more towards the token build mostly because I have an old Grand Warlord Radha deck that I swapped over from, but landfall has historically been a really difficult to deal with archetype since MLD is frowned upon. And making all your lands into beatsticks out of nowhere is actually really awesome!
Really nice breakdown and analysis! There are some great cards in there, I may well look to use some. I'm either going to buy singles or buy the precon and grab the pieces from it. I've built the deck as Cat Tribal, I know it probably won't be as fast or crazy, but I'm really enjoying it! I missed Nacatl War pride, definitely one I'm going to have to include. In Cat tribal Rin & Seri puts is a lot of work too, with all those extra tokens.
If I may suggest something I would include Verdant Embrace, because is virtually a second Tendershoot Dryad, and Marisi breaker of the coil not because of goad, but because "Your opponents can’t cast spells during combat." is huge protection in a deck where a removal spell in the right moment can make you fall from hero to zero. Rumor gatherer is a cool new card too! In tokens it's not hard to make 2 creatures during your turn and that's phyrexian arena level on a body (not the best but not the worst either). Even If you can't draw a card the scry 1 is still very useful
Verdant Embrace is likely to set you up for a 2 for 1. As you cast, they remove the dork or whatever that you target and you wasted your turn and you're down a creature on top. It's not a good idea. I'd rather pay 1 more and run wolverine riders, Dragonlair spider, or dragon broodmother then offer up such an easy 2 for 1
@@andrewpeli9019 But it's the exact same if you use that removal to target the spider or the riders. I mean, you don't need to enchant a relevant creature with verdant embrace. What I do in my token decks is actually enchant a random token, and this in practice make opponents think twice about remove the token or save the removal for something else.
@@ultimateretroasd that's assuming that you have a token as you cast this. It's not the exact same. If someone removes your spider, you only lose the spider. If some removes your aura target, you lose the creature and the aura. But... it is a very efficient token generator, that if not addressed will win games with Jetmir. So... I see the card's merit. Tendershoot's synergy with welcoming vampire, and Bennie Bracks is kind of insane, so this effect is desirable.
@@ToxicAtom ya, it makes 4 tokens a turn rotation in a 4 player game. You don’t have to use the devour ability. Same amount as wolverine rider and same mana value and he recommended adding that and these ones fly
If i may suggest an upping the deck video is the new Rakdos Phoenix Tribal commander from the one commander precon. I'm trying to brew it myself but having trouble.
Can we please get some help for Henzie "Toolbox" avg decklist? There are like 10 cards that don't even make sense but are so popular solely due to being in the precon even with no synergies
I love my Jetmir deck. I built it with less focus on tokens and more on creatures with tap abilities. I wanted to take advantage of the vigilance to try and make my deck a bit different from most other decks.
@Joey Jinnie Fay has an important role to play with Jetmir. She gives your tokens haste. Then you can cast Jetmir and if you need more creatures you can cast a Raise the Alarm and make 2 hasty cats :-)
Am I the only one that doesn’t run aura shards? I view it as pretty much a stax piece in a way. I’m all for running removal, but keeping your playgroup from having a complete subset of cards in play when everyone is just trying to have a fun time playing, seems like a little bit much to me in a casual game
It's oppressive but it fits the strategy and honestly decks that rely heavily on artifacts and enchantments should be able to protect them just like you need to protect your creatures with this deck. I don't view Aura Shards as any different than a Day of Judgment. It's worse than it actually.
I think a Jetmir, the Dragon King Deck would absolutely destroy everything for how powerful the card is. Build mana, get at least 3-5 creature cards with multiple token creatures, Boardwipe with Crux of Fate & then annihilate the weaklings when jetmir emerges. The literal king of Naya decks.
I'm gonna throw you some youtube engagement and ask for an upping the average for karlov of the ghost council? it's a pet deck of mine, i would love to see your take
I actually just made my jetmir decklist two nights ago (5/2/22) and i used the new cabaretti precon to create the body of the deck. Majority of the new add on are on the precon plus you can have phabine, boss's confidant which makes your tokens have haste. Im not sure about the numbers but by buying the precon, maybe you will save more money building that budget deck
Phabine is solid. I included her in my list as well. Cards like Phabine and zoologist that can keep you in cards without losing tempo are great for Jetmir
If I build him, I want to build weenie tribal. Have Big Man be the biggest of mans, and have and excuse to run stuff like Beloved Princess and Adorned Pouncer.
Ummm, I get not including Jinnie, but I would also consider that she can convert your 1/1s to 2/2s with haste. Ultimately, leading to fast and hard hits
@@YaBoyEdGames it's a bunch of x spells token doubling with saber ants and hornets nest. The 42 cats turn 4 came from a dockside with doubling season in play into an x spell into a second harvest.
While my Naya deck is Jinnie not Jetmir, I won a game because of assemble the legion. One player made everyone sacrifice everything except one permanent of each type so I kept Assemble and it just went nuts
A card that I cut from my list after playing the deck a while was skullclamp. Unlike aristocrat lists, you really value your little guys. Losing them and pouring mana into equip cost really set back my tempo. I really like zoologist especially because of convoke but also rumor gatherer, and welcoming vampire in this deck. When did white become great at card draw!?
i absolutely hate this commander. because you either permantly remove their commander and they cry 24/7 because you wont let them have their "fuck you i win card" or you let them have it and instantly lose to stroke their ego and its just annoying. I am all for people playing whatever as long as it matches the power budget but it feels to fast and reliable for low power but no where near fast and consistent enough for mid or high power games. it feels like a low power "golos" deck if you know what i meant. "I dont have any extra turns my golos deck is fair (Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger gets cast for free)"
I disagree on Impact Tremors and Assemble the Legion. They're both excellent as "plan B" type cards. Assemble the Legion will give you a huge board as soon as it gets to your turn in the event you eat a board wipe. Impact Tremors gives you a way to win the game even if Jetmir is dealt with a couple of times and the commander tax starts to overwhelm you.
How does Assemble the Legion give you a huge board after a board wipe? I play this turn 5, pass, board wipe hits, I start my turn 6 and make 1 token? Also if you’ve already casted Jetmir a few times that probably means you had a board state to make that practical meaning to creatures have already come out so you won’t get the Impact Trigger damage. Would rather have another token generator.
I still run all 3 signets, Sol Ring, and Arcane Signet in my tokens deck, they still get the job done at 2 mana or less. I just don't want to be ramping at 3 mana, I find it a little too slow. I run all the good 2 mana green ramp sorceries, once at 3 mana I've found in better to be getting a creature out or starting to make tokens.
@@assau1tedpeanutinc540 Some pods run more artifact removal than others as well. This is why i tend to run almost exclusively instant/sorcery ramp in my henzie deck. Alela is my other commander and she is the opposite at exclusively artifacts. So many different decks want different things.
I feel like Jetmir will play out like a glass cannon krenko. I’m not sure if adding whites reanimation and protection will make it less so. Boardwipes and commander removal will be backbreaking.
