- What are your options if your golf ball ends up in a penalty area?
I met up with PGA Rules Professional David Rishworth to find out. We cover penalty drops, moveable obstructions and embedded golf balls.

Hi Hannah. Thanks for the helpful video. You may have made it before the recent rules change, but doesn't the area of relief for back-on-the-line relief now form a one club length circle so even if the ball rolls nearer the hole it's ok, as long as it stays within that circle? Thanks.
Yes it does! I did film this before they changed that 😂
@Burns2271 plus you now have to Drop ON the Line, so that point On the Line becomes the Center of the One Club Length Radius Circle.
Awesome thanks very helpful
When your rules guy answered “Any loose impediment can be moved” in relation to your question about the stones he seemed very vague! So in essence, according to his rules interpretation you could move all the stones behind your ball thereby almost creating a tee for your ball ?
At my course, many of the posts are concreted in, and there is a local rule making all such posts immovable obstructions. My understanding is that, in the absence of a line showing the post outside, then the posts mark the edge of the hazard and are within them - so no relief. Harsh.
If the committee has designation them as immovable obstructions you should be able to take free relief and move so they no longer interfere with your swing
@@hannahholdenNCG I would be delighted to be proved wrong - especially as it is what most people do - but I don’t believe it’s right. 16.1b says there is immovable item relief EXCEPT in a penalty area. And from that definition…
“Stakes: When defined by stakes, … and the stakes are inside the penalty area.”
@mikesnowden1054 There is room under one of the Model Local Rule to have your "Immovable Stakes" designated for Free Relief even though they are by Definition inside the PA.
@@apaulmcdonough2170 I couldn't find that in the rules; if you could highlight it, I would very much appreciate it (and would take it to my committee!)
@Fractalgeek you want "Model Local Rule F-24"
This would allow for Free Relief - that remains Inside the PA - from the Immovable PA Boundary Stakes.
MLR F-24 requires the announcement of precisely which Immovable Obstructions Relief is available from, so it doesn't become a "Get Out of Jail Free" Card from ALL IO inside of the Penalty Areas.
Does the foot wedge not count here Hannah? 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
I thought the longest club could be used to measure with the head cover ON. Please clarify, Hannah
You can keep the headcover on but the length of measurement only includes the club not the club and the headcover so I find it easier to take it off
@@hannahholdenNCG Thanks!
