Every single household in Yugoslavia had at least one Gorenje appliance at one time. They really never belonged with the rest of the Balkan group. Their way of life is more like Austrian or German. When will this nonsense about the Balkans stop? Balkan is not a true geographical term because it's a vague term originating from the Ottoman Empire, specifically defining the European part they conquered. The land where Slovenia is was never under Ottoman control so this theory falls immediately. The only reason ignorant people mark Slovenia as Balkan is just because of Yugoslavia which was a failed attempt to make all the South Slavs the same. Guess how well that ended up. Slovenes firstly are not only South Slavs they are also half western Slavs who settled before the South Slavs arrived.
Slovenia might partly be located on the Balkan peninsula but culturally, it is definitely not a part of the Balkans. They even call Balkan immigrants 'Balkanci' (Balkanians).
The name Balkan is actually a young name. It came into force only after the Berlin Congress of 1878. Previously, this area was called European Turkey. After the Congress of Berlin, when the independent states of Serbia, Romania, Montenegro and the autonomy of Bulgaria were created, the name European Turkey is no longer an option. They use the shorter name Balkan,. So Balkan are countries which were under Otomans. Even Croatia is not Balkan.
In strictly geographical terms, a large part of Slovenia is a part of the Balkan peninsula. But that is totally irrelevant. "Balkans" as a sociological and political term is what matters. And Slovenia has never been a part of that. It is much the same with my own country, Croatia (or at least the western part of it).
Geographical Balkan "peninsula" is questionable, such as borders on West, East & South because historical "Balkans" was completely different {geographically}. Modern borders of Balkan "peninsula" are very stretched. And no, minority part of Slovenia is on the "Balkan peninsula", about 23 - 27 %. They are considered "Balkan country" just because of Yugoslav era.
@tienshinhan2524 Which confirms what I wrote about the sociological and political meaning of the term "the Balkans". And once again, that is why Slovenia cannot be considered a Balkan country. The geographical aspect, you are wrong. Balkan is a peninsula, whether you like it or not. The western and northern borders are the south banks of the rivers Sava and Danube. So, anything south of Ribcev Laz at Lake Bohinj (Sava Bohinjka) is geographically the Balkans. E.g. my hometown of Zagreb is geographically part Balkans, just because it was built on both sides of Sava. I guess you skipped your geography classes.
Agree, Slovenian's destiny is exactly the same like the ours, the Czech one. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities due to many centuries under the rule of Holy Roman Empire and Austrian-Hungarian Empire, which set Slovenia completely apart from the Balkans and basically it completely integrated Slovenia into the sphere of Central Europe, and I would not be afraid to say even more among the West Slavs than the South Slavs. And as you say, the part of Croatia as well and I would say also the north half of Serbia, which was under the Austrian-Hungarian Empire for many centuries as well, but there the Ottoman influence is still far more pronounced.
@@branko4033 In geographical aspect I am right & you are right but only partially. Modern borders of so called "Balkan "peninsula" are very stretched & they are completely different than historical borders of that "peninsula. Historical borders are Danube ~ Sava ~ Una ~ Krka. Then they stretched borders to the West to Korana, later on Kupa river & than on Sava river. Border goes on Sava river but not on entire strem of Sava river. The real line of that border goes: Sava ~ Krka ~ Vipava - Soča. All of those rivers... especially Krka, Vipava & Soča... those rivers are so narrow and deep that they cannot mark a peninsula, peninsular error. Ribčev Laz & Lake Bohinj, Sava Bohinjka are geographically on the Balkan "peninsula" but only on the paper. Does not make that territory completely nothing more Eastern but only Southern. For example Zagreb Southern from Sava is nothing more Eastern than Zagreb Northern from Sava river. Slovenia is considered s Balkan country because of Yugoslavia, {more or less}. Not whole Balkan "peninsula" is Southeastern Europe. Only country that is really on that "peninsula" is Greece. Btw, I am Serb & Serbia is Central Balkan country not on Western Balkan. ☘
Slovenia is not a Balkan country not geographically nor culturally and because was part 76 years of Yugoslavia that doesn't mean that belongs to the Balkans actually Slovenia was 1000 hears part of a Holly Roman empire....

Only a small part of Alps are in Slovenia (compared to Switzerland, AUT, ITA, FR) but no one would argue that is not "alpic" country. The same reasoning applies for it being Balkan country - located (partly) on Balkan peninsula.
1/4 of Slovenia is geographically on the Balkan peninsula. And geography is exact science. But Slovenia is also a Mediterranean, Panonnian, Alpine and above all a Central European country with ancestral links to Czechs and Slovaks.
They use the shorter name Balkan, which is the result of a mistake. Where is the (western) border of the Balkans? There have been countless debates about where the geographical border of the Balkans is. According to one interpretation, the mainland part of the peninsula's border is discovered by simply drawing a straight line between Odessa on the Black Sea and Trieste on the Adriatic. Many more geographers support the opinion that the border runs along the rivers. Until the end of the First World War, the prevailing opinion of Austrian geographers was that the border of the peninsula runs along the Danube to the mouth of the Sava, then along the Sava to the mouth of the Kolpa, along the Kolpa, and finally descends in a straight line to the River. Therefore, the territory of Slovenia was not included in the Balkan Peninsula. Later after the end of the first world War Mostly Serbian and SHS tried to place the borders as far west as possible. In the case of the Balkans, it is primarily a matter of cultural naming, geographically it is no objective to "search" for a peninsula. Even Croatia is not Balkan country
That part of Balkan "peninsula" (1/4) of territory is in most Southern part of Central Europe. I am from Serbia & for me "Balkan" & especially Balkan "peninsula" is a nonsense. I agree about ancestral links with Czechs, Moravians & Slovaks.
@tienshinhan2524 Did you read my answer......Because of SHS Srbs tried to push west border as west as was possible. I put exactly what was agreed between geographers. And even today the west border of Balkan from geography is clear. Once again later was evan a lot of "political" pressure on geographical.
@@Simon-o4h Ok. Where are for you West, East & South borders of that "peninsula". I am from Serbia & for me that is nonsense... so called "Balkan peninsula".
finally a comment i can agree with :) as for this 1/4, the culture of the people on this part is still not anything like balkan anyway, is it, it's just Slovenes and their culture

@@alpineanubis Balkan is geographical term, true, but very questionable about Western, Eastern & Southern borders. @@ro.stan.4115 Geography does not mean nothing. Slovenia have about 47 km of coast. For Alps you are right. Being "Balkan country" has a lot of definitions. That Balkan part of Slovenia does not make that terittory nothing more Eastern & it's not "partly" on that "peninsula" but with minor part, about 24 - 28 %. Modern borders of Balkan "peninsula" are stretched.
I see in the comments a strong discussion on the question of whether Slovenia belongs to the Balkans or not. The first problem is to understand what the Balkans are, most people define it as a peninsula, but geographically it is not, that is, if we consider the Balkans a peninsula, then Europe is also a peninsula, the Balkans have too much territory vast connected to the European continent to be considered a peninsula. Historically since this term has existed (1700) the Balkans are the European countries that were under Ottoman rule at that time (therefore excluding Slovenia and Croatia which were under Habsburg rule). With the creation of Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Croatia also "entered the Balkans" and in 70 years they have been greatly influenced by it, in cuisine and music, especially due to the immigration of Bosnians, Serbs, Kosovars and Macedonians. Culturally, Slovenia and Croatia are not Balkan, as they do not have a common past and culture with the other Balkan countries: Orthodox and Muslim religion, Byzantine and Ottoman culture, use of the Cyrillic alphabet, typically Turkish cuisine. Balkan cuisine is actually very present in both Slovenia and Croatia, but it has been present in the area since more or less the 70s, and we are all happy about it.😋

This is the most misguided thinking that Slovenia is a Balkan country because after the collapse of Austria-Hungary, Slovenia was assigned to Yugoslavia. Before that, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire for 1000 years, which other nations of former Yugoslavia were not. Slovenia is not a Balkan country either genetically or culturally. Slovenia has gone through all phases of Western European culture such as the Roman Empire, Gothic, Renaissance, Protestant Reformation, Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution and unfortunately also communism in the past century. It is a completely Alpine nation like Austrian or Bavarian, only it had this unfortunate Balkan occupation from 1918 to 1991. ruclips.net/video/rrO4jHGkxFs/видео.html

Minor, not partly. 25 - 28 %.
@@tienshinhan2524 I thought it was even less than that.
@@markmarku8169 upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5b/Balkan_topo_blank.jpg
I think yes from Italy

1/4 of Slovenia is geographically on the Balkan peninsula. And geography is exact science. But Slovenia is also a Mediterranean, Panonnian, Alpine and above all a Central European country with ancestral links to Czechs and Slovaks.

Balkan cuisine is actually very present in both Slovenia and Croatia, but it has been present in the area since more or less the 70s, and we are all happy about it.😋

is a Balkan country because after the collapse of Austria-Hungary,
Slovenia was assigned to Yugoslavia. Before that, it was part of the
Holy Roman Empire for 1000 years, which other nations of former Yugoslavia were not.
Slovenia is not a Balkan country either genetically or culturally. Slovenia has
gone through all phases of Western European culture such as the Roman Empire, Gothic,
Renaissance, Protestant Reformation, Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution and
unfortunately also communism in the past century. It is a completely Alpine nation
