I Went Winter Camping in my Astro Van

- On top of the Rocky Mountains here in Utah it was 10°F at night and Fred held up awesome. With a little more heat throughout the night, the van would've been a cozy little cabin in the harsh weather.
This little test is another reason why Fred and the Astro Van in general is an awesome adventure rig!

You've probably figured it out by now, putting your shoes in a cloth bag and keeping them, pants & shirt, as well as a bottle of water all under the blanket with you, makes for a more enjoyable morning
Yes exactly, that makes a huge difference
Great vid, anyone else think he could be Mav's relative? :D
Gee, maybe? 😕
Bro I’ve got so many comments just like this 😂 but no, I’m not his relative
@@bgrace27 lmao you look like you could be at least his cousin if not, his brother lol
it s the voice /way to speak that give the mav's vibe.....
Take the job in Alaska. Live life with no regrets. Good luck, dude!
Heck yeah, I ended up taking the job! I’ll be headed up in 2 weeks
Here are a couple of tips to help you keep warmer next time. First off, put your boots inside your sleeping bag, near the bottom. Sleep in your winter hat, and close up your van earlier in the evening. I would also get rid of the jeans in cold weather... don't wear cotton in cold temps. Your awning looks pretty cool ! Have fun on the rest of your trip!
When your water bottle freezes inside your van it's a little more than cold🥶. Those little buddy heaters leave a film on the inside of your windows if you haven't figured that out already. I couldn't see out my windshield when the sun hit it after the first night I used one, I scrubbed my windshield and couldn't figure out what the heck was on there that wouldn't come off, then I realized maybe my heater had left a film inside the window, sure enough that's what it was. Glass cleaner is a good thing to have with you if you're going to keep using it. Was glad to see you opened your fan for fresh air. CO2 alarm would be another good thing to have. If you can ever afford it, a heater that runs off your gas tank is the luxury way to go. Or chase the warm weather so you don't need a heater 🏜☀Alaska would be an exciting adventure, probably worth a try, you can always leave if you don't like it. Keep on having fun and stay safe!
Good Job demonstrating how moisture buildup is a problema. Wow, had heard that propane creates moisture vs. wood or gas heat, but you showed it.... and yes we naturally release moisture thru our breath. My van build heat "want" is a wood stove!
Dude me too, I want a little wood stove so bad
I'm working on a 96 astro van.
Invest in a heated blanket for inside your sleeping bag so it's nice and warm😊
Plus double up on socks at night
I used to have an electric blanket but my mom stole it 😞 another one certainly wouldn’t hurt
take the job crodie!
Awesome!
Go for it! Alaska is awsome!
Alaska is a bucket list item for a lot of people. If you have the opportunity to go, I say go! If you've going to be living in your van up there you'll need up upgrade your heater game. Looks like you're still having fun with it all and that's the most important thing!
That’s what I’m thinking and I think that means I’ve gotta go BigRobsVan. While up there I would get to live in their housing for free which is great for making more money. Unfortunately that means less time spent in my Astro van I’ve spent hundreds of hours building and preparing for using 😔
There will always be time in the future though!! I can’t say the same about Alaska
Your mom stole your blanket! 🤣🤣🤣
Once in lifetime trip take it. Your young go explore see And do things. Alaska is on my bucket list for sure. Have fun safe travels.
Alaska it is! Thank you 🙏
Subscribed! Great cadence to the video and on par in quality with other large van lifers. Lets see your channel grow once it hits the YT algorithm
Thank you so much!!
Alaska!
If you plan on going to Alaska in the winter you need a diesel heater for sure. Bedding needs to be in layers because if you get a really good blanket for sub-zero it will be too hot in warmer temperatures. I was an over-the-road truck driver and I slept many times all night in cold weather down to zero. I usually planned to just go down to the teens but many times I woke up in the single digits. You can use your stove for a quick warmup in the morning. Make coffee and you won't waste fuel.
I love you van I wish I could do that to the inside of mine. When you let your buddy heater I noticed if you hold the red on button in for 30 seconds once you get it orange tip on the blue flame then let go of the red button and it’ll light right away.!👍🏻👍🏻🙋🏼♀️
It was a pain in the booty but I would do it 100x over again cause I love my interior!
Sometimes I can be a little slow 🥴
Thank you for the buddy heater tip
So you can scoop some of the coals from your fire, bring it into your van with a fire bucket and warm the interior. Maybe a carpet would keep the van warmer too? Heater blanket?
Great ideas!
man , u really have such a postitive outlook on everything... when i watch ur videos, i feel like im watching an authentic person, ur very gratefull and possitive and need very little to make u happier then most... good luck on ur journey and life in general, i wish u nothing but happiness ..
Thank you so much 🫶 I appreciate the compliment and the support
Great video your future plans sound exciting so what ever you decide to go is all up to you wishing you the best whatever you decide my friend ❣️❣️❣️
Thank you 🙏
Great video.
The buddy heater is a great option for warmth, but not for sleeping,in the cold. Plus the cost of fuel is another issue. Another alternative would be the Vestafire heater/stove. Runs on sterno type fuel, and has quite a long burn time. I experimented with one,in a 7x9 outdoor shed,on a very cold, snowy, central pa night. (-6)
That thing burned for about 6hrs,and kept it quite comfortable.. No fumes, except when putting out and initial lighting..(a few seconds max)
Can use any type of canned heat(gel is better) and cost isn't horrible. I pick up a couple cans, every trip to Walmart.(store them away until needed) right now I have about 15 to 20 cans..lol
Will definitely go in my van camper, when I build this spring/summer.😎
I would definitely take the job in Alaska. What a great story to add to your life journey
That’s what I’m thinking too!
Ive lived in alaska. If you get the chance go and do it..its epic and sich a different life up there..yhe drive up the alcan highway is epic
love the content! I Travel in a toyota land cruiser and I use a diesel heater in the winter. Dry heat no condensation and it can safely be left on all night on low. For safety use a CO monitor alarm. I am thinking about upsizing to a 4x4 van when it can be afforded. Keep going with the content and yeah Alaska is an adventure. I went for a summer job fishing salmon and working at a fish packing job. Made life long friends and had quite an adventure. I was 24 yo at the time. Absolutely encourage you to go there. Set it up now and head there in the late spring. Beware lots of mosquitos :)
That’s awesome you travel in a Land Cruiser! Jealous 🥴
I’ve thought hard about it and it makes so much sense to go that I can’t resist, I’m going
I just put a diesel heater in my Astro. It’s mint 👌🏻
So jealous 😩
Don’t give up a once in a lifetime thing g do it if it’s what u really want
The old fashioned hot water bottle with a cloth cover at your feet works all night and won't melt your bag and I wear a hoody to bed!
Zero degree sleep kit would help out, maybe some wool blankets. Sleep with your clothes in your bag or underneath you. Someone probably said all this already but good advice.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Love your adventures! Keep it up...as for Alaska or Arizona....I hate the cold haha
i just got a 03 astro awd! loving it so far...
Awesome bro, Astros are the way to go 🤙
DIESEL HEATER MIGHT BE BETTER AND LAST LONGER.... THANKS FOR SHARING....VERY KOOL!

ALASKA IT IS!!!
I love Utah! I think I wanna to live there.
It’s a wonderful place. Deserts, mountains, lakes, rivers, forests, badlands, wetlands, it’s got it all
@@bgrace27 about two years ago I traveled to a few states and Utah was one of them and loved it. My only concern is cost of living and snow. I live in the south and we consider the pollen, the yellow pollen as snow! 🤣🤣
I just caught your channel, and subscribed.Aren't you a cutie pie wow if i was 30 yrs. younger. Lol. Happy trails Go to Alaska, dont miss these opportunities sweetie,,, and work hard and try to keep your channel at par. Your mom has got to be proud.❤you only have to hold the lighter button down for a few seconds, let go and walla. 😊also you need a stocking cap when you sleep in the cold!
Thank you 😊
You have a nice Van enjoy your day..😊
I love my van!
Brah, ditch those 1lb propane tanks, get yourself a 20 lb tank and you can use your Mr.Buddy all night long. Get a CO2 monitor also. Make sure your vent is open a bit for fresh flow and you're good to go.
Definitely go to ALASKA!! I’m from Ontario, Canada and that’s a trip I always wanted to do as a teen or in my 20s! I’m 56 and still haven’t been lol so get your young ass out there before life happens! Lol 🤙🏻🇨🇦 PS get yourself one of those diesel heaters too…
Sounds like I’m going to Alaska!
@@bgrace27lol 👍🏻
Our Astros are really too small of a space for a buddy heater and oily moisture is a byproduct of propane combustion in a confined space.
Id recommend for you to look into an air heater, either diesel heater, propex or a webasto.
We just invested in a gasoline webasto heater, that ill be installing in the next couple of weeks. It was a HUGE expense but one that will make for much more comfortable and safe heat in the winter.
I love that awning! Totally makes sense as it's so quick and portable!
I love it, thank you 😊
Im new to your channel. R there any plans for that awning?
@@angelabarnes1547 using it!
Yes, I see your using it. Yeah! If I were to build one for my van, is there any list of parts & "plan" available do so?
@@angelabarnes1547 ohhhhhhh I’m sorry I mis understood your question…
Yes, there is a channel called “Overland under budget” who did a how to video on making one. He gives you the general knowledge and parts for how to do it but he is selling a bracket piece that’s difficult to make. I made mine myself anyways but it’s a great video
Go for Alaska bro you’re young and seem healthy you already know that you have a place to eat and sleep and you can save money
Always say yes to life.
EXACTLY
good luck man.
Thank you

I’m thinking about doing the van life not only for travel but living out for while while getting my business up and running
Great idea

Just found your channel. Love your style. Very personable and positive. Wish you a fun successful adventure. I will be looking forward to your interesting and entertaining travels. Wish you the very best and please be safe!!
Thank you so very much! Welcome aboard ✌️
Dude has cool van
Arizona bro is cool but Alaska it beautiful. Alaska is exspencive to live .
Very expensive
If you have more food than you can eat in the package cook it anyway it's cold outside and you can stick it out there till morning and the food preserves longer if it's cooked
Good idea bro
You can put hot water in a glass. If you feel it’s too hot. You can put it in a sock. When I was a child, my grandmother did it for me. No thanks. It’s a poor way from previous China.
Diesel Heater…I know space would be hard to find but you could do a “all in one” and set it up outside?
That’s a great thing to look into, thank you
100% Alaska! It would suit your adventurous travelling soul well
I agree
I never had a desire to go to Alaska but if it's in your heart, go give it a try and report back if I am missing anything. I'll be here in Arizona:)
You need to find some way to mitigate that interior condensation, it will only lead to mold.
I’ll let you know! Luckily I don’t use the heater much or I would be very concerned
Nice rig
She’s a beaut
Hey Bronson, I am glad that you and Fred made it through the freezing temperatures. I hate being cold, especially with cold numb feet as this happened to me too lol. The sausage meal that you cooked look very tasty, so I will have to try this out too. What a nice cozy and warm campfire to add to a great and awesome adventure. Yeah, I was going to mention to leave a window open for ventilation with a propane heater but you already knew this:) Alaska is cold but the scenery is awesome and so if the fishing. Of course Arizona is also nice. Hmmmm, what a decision but if it were me, I would probably go to Alaska but get some warmer boots for your feet lol Thanks again for sharing so many great adventures
The sausages were so good, just make sure they are cooked!!! I think I will also go to Alaska because that sounds so awesome
I will definitory make sure they are cooked but I also found some sausages that were precooked at Trader Joe's I will try both@@bgrace27
@@calvinc5961 even better. Very smart
It would be a great opportunity for you to go to Alaska and enjoy the wonderful views
I think I’ll be headed there for sure!
In another video, i watched of yours before this one, you said showering was an issue. Idk how far out planet fitness is across the US. That or the Y might help. Get a monthly membership. If you dont like working out, find something for like 30 min or something. Then shower. That is the cheapest route i can think of. Planet fitness i think is 20 or 25 a month. Has to be the higher membership so you can go to all of them. I go to the Y now. Im sure those are all over. Loving the build btw. Freaking awesome. 😀
Thanks for the insight, unfortunately on the roads I’m traveling I pass by only one or two PF’s so it’s just not so worth it but possibly in the future when I head to more populated areas
Makes complete sense.
Alaska. Try a diesel heater.
i jumped at that once in a lifetime opportunity and now im in korea. dont pass up those chances to get out and do something.
Thank you 🫡
You remind me and look like

A lotta people have said that 😬
Boondock brats. Yummy! The cream corn evaporated, Grab the gusto! Travel as much as you can now. You'll never be this carefree again. Go to Alaska. Arizona will always be closer to you.
I pretty sure Alaska is the choice!!
@@bgrace27 don’t go on those crab boats!! Talk about being scared!!!😱 😱😱😱

Don't sweat the corn...It will reappear tomorrow if ya know what I mean!
I sure do bro
14:35 That's what I'm talking about 🤔
😂
you need a diesal heater propane put most of that ice
Yes I sure do 👌
Well, I live in AZ so I'm rooting for you to come here lol
Alask is of course a big deal, personally I would only like to maybe visit there...maybe, I've seen so much of it online, seemed like every van life channel and RV'ers too went there recently, I know it's awesome in some ways but honestly I got kinda bored, I'm more into the southwest I guess, even tho I really don't like living in Phoenix, I just cannot STAND the summer's here!
I’ll be going to Alaska but Arizona will still be a future destination of course. I’ll even pass through there a little bit in on this road trip
@@bgrace27 If you come to Phoenix, I highly recommend a 'hidden gem" called Canyon Lake, just south of Phoenix. I discovered it existed in the last few yrs after living here for over 40!
@@lauraslanesvanlifetravels sounds good, thank you so much
Arizona's a lot warmer
Lot less cool though 😳
All you really need in life is a cast iron skillet!
Cool video, thanks for sharing. I am concerned with the amount of condensation that accumulates inside your van, most likely from the moisture output of the buddy heater. The warm moist air gets under the headliner, panels, etc. and freezes against the metal of the van. When it thaws you’ll have a moisture condition in all those places that could grow mold. I’m a little nuts, but what I would do is put a dehumidifier in there once it gets above freezing and let it run for a day or two on highest setting.
To be honest I never thought about that. Thank you for leaving this comment so I can think about that
The Chinese diesel heaters are fantastic if you’re willing to do a bit of work to install it…
@@ryanchristie5349 that’s what I do 😁😁
B Grace do you have a video on your homemade Awning? I’d love to watch it. Thanks
Unfortunately I don’t. I built that thing long ago while I was in high school

How long does your van take to start on freezing cold mornings? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?
My van actually starts about the same in just about any conditions. My ignition switch is getting a little worn but as far as the engine and starter goes, it’s all good (knock on wood)
Hey if you make it to Las Vegas let’s meet up I have a 95 Astro . I love all the work you have done I would love to just meet in a parking lot or out at red rock maby lake mead , we have nice dirtbike erea too just let me know let’s make the content !

Great vid,I figured you would go to Alaska anyway lol I want to check out Washington state do you think you’ll ever make it up that way?
I certainly will make it up to Washington. I’ve got a bucket list I’ve gotta cross off just like I’m sure you do!
Hell yeah!!!
From South Africa make shure I don't wake up dead ? At my age, Please give me instructions how to do dat 😂😂
Open up a window and pray 😁
You should have separated the pork from the other. I hope that pork was cooked!!! 😂😂😂 Do you plan on starting memberships??
I’m pretty sure it was cooked 😳 maybe memberships in the future but I’m not planning on anytime soon
Well you know Fred better then we do. Do u think he will get you to Alaska problems free?
When I go to Alaska, I’ll be flying instead of driving. Buuuuuut if I were to drive Fred up there (which I would) I certainly would be nervous but I think Fred is a pretty capable unit
Why didn't you just cook with you fry pan ❤😊
Gotta switch it up 🤪
How did you make those window covers brotha?
I’ve got a short about making them, if you look through my short videos you’ll find it.
But basically I got refletix, spray adhesive, ribbon, and material from Joann’s and cut the shapes out and glued them together then used the ribbon as a border
@@bgrace27 awesome! i ordered 2 ten foot rolls off amazon of the silver insulation like yours and will find a cool material for it. If your ever on the east coast would be epic to link up!
@@ericfrommerrick heck yeah man, I’ll keep you in mind 🤘
I think you need a diesel heater and carbon monoxide alarm 🤨
Tell me about the dreams you had.😮

Gloy's Heat Pal Swedish alcohol heater and cook stove safe
Im new to the channel, but i really like it. This is the 3th vidd i watch. Where u scared to start vanlife? I already have a camper van. But im scared to give up the 1300€ p/m apartment. And why? I dont know
That flashlight is indeed really cool!
Yeah heck yeah man, I was scared as hell to start and work towards getting my life ready to start. I mean when I decided I wanted to do it, that meant quitting college, my career as an electrician, leaving my friends and family, and leaving a steady future behind.
That scared the absolute bajesus out of me but that made me feel more than the life I was living currently ever gave me. That’s how I knew it was right and from there I took the leap.
It’s certainly very hard but aside from the adventure and freedom it brings, the self discovery in it all is worth the hardship alone.
If you’ve got the Van and have the opportunity, don’t waste it man, you’ll regret it the rest of your life. Regret is the passion killer and passion is what gives us a life worth living!
Get out there bro!!!

👋🏻👋🏻Greeting from an old lady in 🇨🇦 that has done a lot of winter camping in a tent and now in a van. To keep your 👣 warm at night = Hot water bottle at the feet. Use that Nalgene bottle (boiled water, secure that lid) in a fleece sock at the bottom of your bag. Then in the morning you have warm water. Wear a toque 🇨🇦 (beanie) when you sleep. Put clothes under the bottom of your sleeping bag. In along the side if the bag is big enough. All the best with your adventures. Alaska sounds more exciting 👍🏼
That’s great advice and I’m sure I’ll be using that within the next few weeks, thank you!

Letting yourself get that cold was not smart. I hope you never ever do that again. Get yourself a different kind of heating system because you can't be letting yourself get that cold. I don't even know how you were able to sleep being that cold.
