- Recently Bryson set out on his RUclips channel and claimed to play with a "rolled-back" golf ball. What we can tell you is...that's just not true. Did he make a point? Maybe. But from the very beginning, the whole "test" was flawed. This, more on Nelly's 3 peat, and a surprise on the USGA list from TaylorMade. Lots to dive into today on NoPuttsGiven folks. Let's get it!

Here's the thing. We don't need to roll back the balk. Just grow the rough, narrow the fairways. That's all you have to do. If accuracy is a premium, and rough is a penalty, you no longer have a distance problem.
yeah but climate change and we are running out of water man
@@wgsmit02but mowing the rough more frequently and cutting down trees is helping the climate? I can’t keep up with the hypocrisy
@@wgsmit02or manufacturing and distributing an unnecessary new ball making millions of golf balls obsolete. Seems like a waste no?
@@LegolasFan69 sorry I forgot the /s
I hope this is a joke.
If the LPGA had more priority for the networks, I think fans would start to watch. It’s really good golf and is more relatable to the average golfer than the men’s game.
So is the WNBA, but we want to see the best in the world perform in the sport we love. The best LPGA player ever, Annaka S wouldn’t be in the top 130 at any point in the history of the game.
Are networks charities or for profit businesses? Ask yourself why this show doesn’t dedicate 50% of its coverage to the LPGA? Because it would start losing viewers, that’s why. Grow up and stop white knighting.
Someone has daughters I see
The ladies tour is not suffering from discrimination, or unfair treatment. The issue is women don't watch much sports. And, there is also nothing wrong with that either. Men and Women, in general, have different interests. The ladies get paid in proportion to the viewership. The men get paid in proportion to the viewership. It's not because of the patriarchy. It's just math.
Not sure why it’s that difficult to understand. And the few women that watch sports prefer to watch the men.
Leave our balls alone! No diddy! The pro fairways don’t need to be so fast
Bryson is absolutely NOT an idiot. It was a good video! He’s a good guy that doesn’t need to bash other people to feel better about himself. Interesting you guys need to use his name as clickbait. Probably partly why his channel is growing 500k+ and you guys can’t get to 100🤦🏻♂️
In this instance, what he said was entirely innacurate. Bryson is a world class golfer and we used his name b/c that was the topic...it's kinda an important piece of the conversation.
Thanks for “STOP LAYING UP”
THANK YOU! Loved the segment on Stop Laying Up. Another common narrative on RUclips you could tackle is a good short game is more important than good ball striking.
I’m 100% for any information REAL or FAKE that stops this stupid roll back
Rolling back the balls is terrible for golf. The only, and I mean only, decent thing that could come out of is would be the number of people claiming they can hit it 300 yds should go down. BUT, I’m old enough to remember people were doing that back in the 90’s when only an actual handful of pros could legitimately make that claim.
It’s funny how you Redditors get so triggered by guys hitting it 300 LOL it’s really not that hard
LPGA over the Champions Tour, hands down. Women’s golf is fantastic these days, it’s relatable and these girls got skills.
Small note: Toney carefully assumes that greens are bigger in Europe (based on what he's seen of St Andrews mainly). The opposite is true: greens are much smaller in Ireland/UK and mainland Europe. Huge green complexes are very rare, and are mainly found in top championship (USGA conforming) courses only...
As men, how many women’s sports do we need to carry? At any point are we going to ask the women to support the women? What % of your viewership is male/female? Are you even talking to the right audience?
Agreed. Men trying to grow women's golf on women's behalf is like women trying to get more men into watching fashion shows, or buying more makeup, etc.
Just because men are into golf, or sports, or whatever, doesn't mean women need to be into it as much. There's nothing wrong with men and women having different interests.
Ultimately, the market decides and if X product puts more butts in seats, it doesn't matter.
Couldn't agree more. The WNBA, as an example, is railing on us men because we ignore their league, yet, they say nothing about the low viewership or attendance of other women watching their performances. Plus, they say nothing about the boatloads of money the men's league uses to keep them afloat. They have never been profitable and never will be. Who, male or female, wants to see women try to play the game like men when we can watch the men play. Cheers.
The LPGA is pound for pound the best golf to watch. How they get around the course is much more relatable for the average golfer. They tend to play chess with the course not just power through it.
They have got better legs too
Champions Tour is more iconic. LPGA is just the WNBA of golf. Heck, women's college ball is more interesting rn than their pro league.
Since we know the testing parameters for rollback-same distance for 5mph more club speed-can’t we just infer that current balls that are 7.5 mph slower in ball speed (I.e 5 mph CHS * 1.5 smash factor) will conform? Looking at the 2023 MGS ball test this would be something like the Wilson DUO Soft against the Titlest Left Dash. I realize there are other factors, but it looks like the ball rolls 28 yds less in the MGS study when you’d think a rollback ball would be about 15ish yds less.
I am more likely to watch Champions because I remember seeing those guys playing on tour so it's name recognition and I am interested to see how they are hitting. Also. I watch some LPGA too but more Champions if I am watching something other than PGA or LIV.
Yep take 3 wood hit it in the woods because no trouble I’ll take a club that keeps it in play and take my par or bogeys while avoiding doubles triples etc
Absolutely I’m the same it’s shorter than my driver but can’t keep it in play.
I mean it could be argued that LIV would be a great place to introduce the idea of men and woman golfers competing against each other. Move the tee box up and have a place for woman to tee off and you can now introduce this opportunity. I think ratings would go up if LIV introduced the idea of "Coed" teams.
Id still watch champions tour, they could still run laps around the LPGA field as seniors, kind of sad.?
When it come to watching ANY sporting event on television, I want to hear the crowds roar when something exciting happens. This is not present in either LPGA or Champions Tour coverage....#boring
Not true, maybe watch a little more and see. There crowds and cheers at LPGA
65 yard challenge: $100000 and pretty confident I could do it. Plus I have other hobbies that could fill 3 years while I wait in purgatory for my hubris of thinking I could hole out from anywhere.
Love you guys.
What are the stats on how often high handicappers lose their balls with a 3 wood? Stats nerds are always saying "closer closer closer" but high handercappers are out here losing a dozen balls a round with their longest clubs.
Data collected by shot scope and quoted by Jon Sherman shows that the difference between driver and 3 wood for hitting the fairway is within 1% difference. In fact with high handicappers they were worse with the 3 wood.
I'm taliking more about going for the green at 280 yards vs hitting 2 clubs you're comfortable with. not tee shots
@@patrickrowland6777
Stay tuned for next week...Tony has done some digging and I can't wait to share it!
Forced carry would be the only reason not to go for a par 5 in 2 in my opinion
In order of my viewing choices.
1 PGA
2 DP
3 LPGA
4 Champions
If I watch the Champions Tour, it’s with the sound down because imo Lanny Watkins is the worst color commentator in golf, and it’s the least compelling golf.
Going for it on a par 5 always depends on the situation and risk/reward. Tony is correct. DDDS.
Finally, I wouldn’t take the challenge. The closer I got to not holing out the more I’d press and the worse I’d get. Plus I’m at an age where 3 years is too much time to give up.
I’d say laying up is probably more accurate description even when going for it. So if the green is 300 yards and 3 wood could get to trouble you lay up short of the trouble. If you’re 210 and over the green is death you’re trying to hit something onto the front or a little short. If you’re able to get there with a perfect 3 wood and there’s no penalty for duffing one then go for it. If 40 yards from the green is almost death due to green sloping away and hard/fast etc then the smart play is hitting sand or lob full shot in. Or you can’t hold the green type. So on all of those I’d basically consider them layups aside from the all out perfect shot that has a chance of reaching.
I stream LIV and watch on tv 1. LPGA 2. Champions and lastly PGA if none of the others available.
The other issue with the numbers. What group of golfers do these stats come from. Out of the group of 20 guys I’m the only one that uses any kind of stat capture equipment. I use shot scope.
I’m watching the LPGA all day long! And now that the men’s pro golfers are split, I will never watch LIV. I am to the point I would rather watch the LPGA than the PGA.
But all the good players play on LIV
Which accounts/videos are they referring to at the Stop Laying Up segment?
ruclips.net/video/VOSOE9046r0/видео.htmlsi=_8NlwFIq78Fke2OP I'm guessing
Dont buy a mini driver at 500$
Just buy the original RBZ 3 wood
I still hit mine 320y off the tee and 285y off the deck😎
Good advice guys.... DDST, don't do stupid things. To achieve that, you've got to leave that Ego in your car.
NPG Challenge: no way i make it from 65 with 100 tries. no way i risk not playing for 3 years (i’m so old i probably only have 3 years of playing [decent] golf).
I haven't watched a single round from the Champions Tour this year. I watch some of the LPGA every week.
NPG Challenge…….. I’m in!
I would go for it. I personally think that's one of my better ranges, and you just gotta get lucky once ✌️
Also I need the money, and either way i make it, or save more by not golfing.
I have learned a lot from Brysons' videos esp long drive and now I consistently drive 300+yrds. His content is usually very entertaining and he knows MORE about the mechanics of golf equipment and swing mechanics than you guys, guess that's why you hate on him every chance you get, grow up guys. How many times have you both shot a 58? He's figured it out and has won many tournaments and millions to back up his opinions. If you call him an idiot, well, that's uncalled for and of poor taste.
100% agree. These guys are your typical social media clowns. They need to STFU and go away. Can't stand their podcast.
Did you listen to the podcast? They are just explaining why what he hit wasn’t accurate to the roll back.
They literally called Bryson an idiot.@@patrickrowland6777
@@patrickrowland6777 Of course I listened, you are accusing me of being irresponsible like Tony, who slandered a professional golfer? I bet Bryson has a better understanding of what a Rollback ball will be like verses these two know it alls. Their childish commentary reeks of jealousy & I watch almost ALL MGS podcasts since the beginning as well as participate in commentary. Very unprofessional.
Hahaha. Thanks for the laugh. I’m confused why you listen to them at all. If as you argue shooting good scores makes you knowledgeable then you must have shot a 58 as well.
I am also Team Lydia. Just watch LPGA and some of the men’s majors. Enjoyed the podcast.
I came to watch two guys try to armchair nerd a certified nerd.
Looking forward to the roll back give me 2006 wedge spin again
50 yard shot is my kryptonite!!!!!!
The lpga needs a better marketing team, they should be taking full advantage of the current fracture in the mens game and promoting the hell out of the talent within the women's game. Frankly, both can be pretty boring to watch, at times, but Liv has gad the courage to change things and make ut less boring, which is why the pga tour is changing formats and trying to capture the RUclips generation. Say what you want about Bryson, he's done really well in that space, I like his channel.
Brysons always saying nonsense though. Same thing with him calling a 17 degree lofted club a 5 iron because of "spin" only reason you'd do that is so you can say you hit 5 iron 240
He can call it whatever he wants. Some sets a 5 iron is a 3 iron loft.
Why do you care.
@@vincenzod9431 sure he can but it's just misleading to everyone else. A strong 5 iron is 23 degrees. 17 is literally a 4 wood or 5 wood so calling it a five iron is extreme even for the extreme.
1 out of 100 from 65 yds. versus no-golf for 3 years? Not a chance!
a rolled back golf ball is only for 5% of the golfing community. only pros need a rolled back ball, it means nothing to anyone else playing golf.
LPGA vs Champions vs Golf Central
I would much rather watch Golf Central over and over and over for 4-6 hours than some other tour. NOT!!!!!
I enjoy watching the ladies swing because it is just more aesthetic. I want to hit like Lydia.
Yep, I watch the PGA when it's on if I am not out trying to perfect (bwahahahaha) my game, but would love to see more.
I enjoy anyone playing because they are ALL better than me.
I want Epson Tour events televised. I enjoy collegiate. They all have something I can learn.
DDDS……enough said!
LPGA - champs tour is burnt
I agree with Bryson and you guys are wrong on that. His video showed both the good and the bad for him, not for everyone.
You do understand that the "rolled back" ball wasn't a rolled back ball at all, right?
@@GolfSpyC yes, there is no actual rolled back ball yet so it was an example for fun. You guys are too serious.
@@FM-db3ft Sorry, but I'd rather error on the side of giving people accurate information. Bryson is clearly in it for the entertainment factor, which is fine - but plenty of people seem to enjoy getting accurate info.
@@GolfSpyC accurate is the fact the ball was a sample of what a rolled back ball might be. As far as Bryson, he’s one of the hardest working pros out there, competes as much as possible with his challenges to break 50 with different friends to keep the pressure on. You don’t seem to know the guy, I see his determination to win.
@@FM-db3ft Except it wasn't...a rolled back ball likely isn't going to be 90+ compression. It simply can't be. Do I know Bryson personally? No, I don't. But that doesn't change the fact that he was dead wrong - entertaining or not.
Stroke and distance is strong reason for laying up. Several of my fav courses have 2 outcomes: fairway or lost ball. I'll take 3 shots from 80 to 130 for par and outside chance of birdie over dropping and hitting 4 back at the 250 25% of the time. They keep saying drivers hit fairways more than 3 woods so why to hell is 3 wood off the deck and an uneven lie a smart play
No doubt that some holes *might require a different strategy...I.e. my "fire of pit" example. It sounds like your course might require that on a specific hole - but in general, laying up to a preferred yardage is throwing away strokes
I agree with Tony on the LPGA - i'd certainly watch it WAY head of the Champions Tour.
I prefer to watch Tour Champions.
Leave golf ball alone. Most guys that play are not hitting the ball far.
First the reaction to the "rolled back" ball to put it mildly is a joke. Been playing golf over 60 years. OK I am as old as dirt. Even older than the ball Bryson hit. Played clubs from the "stone age" Played old wound balatas that would smile back at you if you mishit them. Guess what? I had FUN. I loved it and am a lifelong player. For the average 18 handicap. They so rarely hit a "good shot" it will make no difference. I listen to the stories that players tell. Guess what? You suck at golf and you don't hit the ball anywhere near as far as you think you do. The first part is proved when you actually play by the rules and what you shoot. (Looking at you DJT). The second part by studies done by every reliable tracking organization and method.
Let's gooo Bryson!
I liked the Bryson video. Definitely entertaining, but I don’t go to his channel for any equipment recommendations.
LPGA 100%. Even over PGA. I can relate better to a 7 iron from 155 and some of their short game struggles. I am in the same age group as the Champions Tour and have zero interest.
I would enjoy a PGA/LPGA combo event. Not against each other but at the same venue. Maybe rotating 2 golf courses. Constant action switching TV back and forth between courses and players.
LPGA over Champions Tour all day, every day.
7-wood is a must!
I’d rather watch the LPGA than the champions tour any given day
LPGA and LIV leagues all the way.
LPGA over any other tour
Scratch hcp only hit 37% of greens? I call bullshit there.
While you sit here and bash Bryson the facts of the matter are that ball played similar to how a rolled back ball would. Who cares if spin is what made it travel less, every shot went a club less than usual which is what a rolled back ball would do
How do you know that? Bryson thought he was hitting a low-compression ball (as he stated), but in fact, it was a firm ball. So, not at all the same.
Since Bryson nor anyone else doesn’t know how the rollback ball will actually perform, his little test is BS.
No challenge
@golfsidekick they’re coming for you
Ha! He just put out a very tongue in cheek video this week on this topic

@@clw22580 What terms do you propose?
Last time i watched the LPGA with any sort of regular interest was when Annika was on a roll. Nelly Korda is pretty amazing. Where's my main interest, LPGA vs Champions Tour? Champions tour. These guys are my age, i relate with them and have watched the majority of them for decades. That said, I don't have a problem watching the LPGA, but PGA and Champions come first. And I don't see the Saudi's / PIF EVER going after women's golf due to the cultural differences. Maybe I'm wrong, just doesn't seem like a reality there.
As for LIV - I generally save LIV viewership for the RUclips highlight reel. Still don't care much for their format - I prefer the PGA Tour's "Coming down the stretch - 16, 17, 18", to the shotgun flurry / finish of LIV's individual and team results.
Film the challenge!
I'd do it for 250k
I'd watch the LPGA over the Champions Tour all day long. Byson only proved that just because you may be academically smart in one subject area doesn't mean you can't be an idot in others. Cheers.
Zack Johnson is a Masters winner because of laying up.. Another question. 8 handicap and under: 50 yard shot vs. 100 yard shot. Which distance are you more accurate from?
And Tiger doesn’t lay up and won 5. You don’t have zach Johnson’s short game and neither do many pros.
50 yards. Stats show
You have to remember how cold and wet that Masters was as well. ZJ employed a strategy and executed it exceptionally well that week. #1 You're not Zach Johnson and #2 What he did that week has no bearing on the vast pool of amateur shot data.
LPGA > Champions Tour every day
The thing about strokes gained versus preferred distance - for average Joe it’s far easier to hit a full wedge shot than a partial
That's literally not true though, it's anecdotal, anyone who's ever studied that has confirmed that being closer to the hole means you will score lower over time
@@Adam-tm7qhthat data wouldn’t disprove what he said tho
@@Adam-tm7qh there is no way it’s counting for lost balls in the woods flubbed shots etc if you are relying on self reported data where shots can easily be deleted/edited you aren’t getting actual golf

If avg Joe would just hit say a 200 yard club 7 wood 5I whatever instead it’s LESS likely to go flying into the woods less likely to be topped 50 yards etc
@@LegolasFan69 yes it would, 96% of amateurs hit it closer from 50 yards than they do from 100 yards according to arcoss
False. At every yardage (and we even included higher-handicap players in this analysis...so by the numbers, "worse" than average) players are better the closer they get to the green. Laying up to a "preferred yardage" is throwing away shots.
The lay up issue is a case by case basis. I am wayyyyyyyyy better with a full swing rather than a in between clubs.
Would love to see the actual data on that...
You guys need to work on giving the basis for your story first, then talk about it. Very frustrating waiting for what in the hell you’re talking about. I’m out.
womans sports is just not as impressive, lets say it. we want the best not just mediocre. There is high school boys that could win those tournaments.
.....and now you've jumped the shark. Let me guess, a scratch golfer could probably win on the LPGA too, right?
@@GolfSpyC A real scratch male golfer? Id go out on a limb and say yes if I could pick them. Here is something to consider, the woman who set the womans WR for 400m running, big accomplishment right and I respect that. There was over 300 high school boys in the USA alone that have a faster time than her, ages 15-17. Now do that over a larger sample size. So when we think of high school boys playing, it might not be as comparable but yes they will win. JT played on the PGA tour then.
@@GolfSpyC So the data tells us that the most elite womans athletes in the world, compete at or about the same level as a 15 year old male. Thats the data. Would you want be content watching 15 year old boys playing golf and calling it quality or would you prefer to watch mens golf where there is no comparison? The very best.
@@mikechar17 Shouldn't all scratch golfers be somewhat similar? That said, I'd even let you cherry-pick a "scratch" golfer and I'd bet my house that they couldn't hang with any top 10 LPGA player...and to think that a high school boy could win on the LPGA? Laughable!
