      Old sailor I know made a potatoe gun which he’d break into couple peices and looks like random parts but he’d put screws in it…. He only used it once and 1 shot was all it took!! Lol
      That’s what I would do because it’s not a gun and when disassembled just random parts

    Pirates are an age old problem. Remember how Joshua Slocum famously put sharp metal tacks all over his deck at sunset. He then picked them up in the morning. Any bare footed local criminals boarding his boat at night ended up jumping overboard after stepping on the tacks. This was in the pre GPS era of early cruising. Low tech.

There are full combat operations going on in the Red Sea and it should be a NO GO place for cruisers... Keeping abreast of no going conflict is also a key to staying safe and not becoming of victim of circumstances.

    Complicated. Having the experience of alarm awakening at 3:00 am to pursue unknown thieves. I recommend the following. Have a main kit and a backup kit. I am not international and guns are ok. So my kit is a shoulder fanny pack type sling that I throw over my head with EVERYTHING I need. It is very small and made for guns. But has high lumens flashlight with strobe, pepper spray, a knife and yes, last ditch a concealed handgun with a red dot. Practice, practice, practice and run drills so you know where everything is. Alarm goes off, you grab one thing with all you need. Backup is for your wife. Run periodic drills since speed may be your savior. Make sure everyone understands what to do if evil targets you.

    How about a couple or more jars full of gas. (Jars break easier than bottles.) If they get too close you can smash the jars on their boat and toss in a road flare. Burgers are optional. Other products that you can get in Canada are Bear Bangers that you launch from a pen sized launcher. There are three types of projectiles. A while back I watched a sailing channel. The owners stopped at South Africa and went to a store that sold (Air Soft type products) The ammo came in solid hard balls that caused quite a lot of pain as well as pepper filled ammo and paint. They had hand gun style as well as rapid fire like machinegun from a large bottle mag. You can reload the air with your air compressor. there are some powerful crossbows on the market.

    I have another idea for you: Place a light switch near you bedside - easily reached when needed that lights up EVERY light on the boat - especially all deck, mast lights possible. Lights almost always dispels darkness and assailants - evil is most active in the darkness where it can hide its activities. Same thing for a home on land. GREAT deterrent is outside lighting always on (No dark spots to approach into) and when a switch is thrown "on" - the WHOLE house inside lights up! Darkness and the Light cannot co-exist. The crawly creatures of darkness run from being seen/noticed/identified/defended against. They want surprise! Could save lives easily with no gun issues (MY personal favorite) and could even be motion initiated.

      There is also a siren driver used in the alarm industry, that can be digitally pre-programmed with ANY SOUND! This can then be wired into a relay to go off at same time as lights deploy! Instead of siren sound it's your audio... like: A really big dog growling and barking with his chain dragging!
      Or
      The sound of 10 guns being cocked and loaded and voice warning we can see you.
      Or
      any voice message you wish prerecorded.: This is sv "blank" we feel threatened and need help, any neighbour's awake please lend assistance!!
      Etc. Etc.
      With this siren driver deployed with lights this would already be working before you even had fully awakened. And it's very cost effective. Driver, siren, relay and wire between. Works off 12 to 24 volts. Probably less than $60.00 today

      You don't want to light up the boat/yacht. You want to light up the area around the boat. Another thing you can do is to set up a house alarm that is activated with a switch. They are very loud and will wake up anybody on a boat near you.

    One of the best deterrents is having the right type of dog on board as the 'ships dog' (not a lap dog). nobody can even get close to the boat without me knowing about it, and learning to distinguish her barks and growls tells me how far away or how urgent the object is. It is surprising how many people are absolutely afraid of a dog...big or small, it doesn't matter. And How many people who are forbidden to be touched by a dog. How local fishermen simply stay away from your boat while they fish (and possibly study you). And they make the best companions and add a lot of fun for just a few trade offs. Schipperke's are natural boat dogs.

    A salty old sea dog once told me to keep several beer bottles full of fuel on board. If approached by the enemy you take them on deck and act drunk and welcome them by throwing the open bottles to them in their boat. More often then not you wouldn’t need an ignition source as some would be smoking, however if you do a few extra bottles made as Molotov cocktails would do the trick

    • @davidloewen5528
      @davidloewen5528 2 месяца назад +2

      Not a fan of this idea. Electric fences for cattle are decidedly non-harmful, as a kid I would re-string them on the farm while they were live. At worst some one on the boat gets knocked overboard and it complicates the rescue. But floating buoys with weighted bottoms and poles could hold a fence with a much higher power strobing electric fence. It should have warning signs. But this wouldn’t work either as it would be dangerous to your neighbours anchoring along side, what happens when the wind changes?

Boat stuff is generally really expensive, dinghy, outboards, even paddleboards and kayaks, fuel cans, ropes. All of this gear that is expensive to replace is also desirable for those living on the sea shore and as times get tougher people tend to make more desperate decisions. Love the driveway sensors. They go right on the list for the next trip to a hardware store. Likewise a big laser. Great idea. Ball bearings and an old fashion leather sling would be a fun security tool to master, great range, and easy to get in and out of jurisdictions.

    Situational awareness. Always learn as much as you can, but not from paranoid sources. What are the actual risks? And what actually happens? You don't want to go full War Mode on pushy panhandlers. Don't brandish weapons -- that's usually a crime. Carry things that in an emergency can be used for defense. Connect with other boats and especially the locals as often as you can. They'll tell you what's up. Make friends. Be generous, but not flashy.
    Have some stuff to share. Put it in bags that float. Fishermen acting a bit too....? Toss them some gift bags but behind them, way over to that side.. I learned from you guys that fishermen are sick to death of fish, rice, tea. Sodas, cookies.
    If you're going to try the Tom Hanks radio trick -- have a loud hailer set up so your call and responses can be heard by the approaching people and everyone in hearing range. Maybe broadcast a few phone conversations you're having over Starlink. Let the world know you're better connected than CNN.
    Lights. Super bright flash lights. Always great. "I see you... you can't see anything..." Really helpful coming into a harbor or anchorage at night.
    But if you get the 'feeling' you're in a dodgy place. Leave. Later as you gain experience and situational awareness you might be a bit embarrassed that you over reacted. You'll quickly tune into what's safe and what might not be.
    Time equals distance. If you leave now, you can probably be too far away and too difficult to find even by people in a boat four times the speed of your boat. If you have a good head start. Head out one way, get out of sight and then change direction. Turn off AIS.
    The flare gun video showed what everyone who's thought about it figured out. During the L.A. Riots four shots into the air from a shotgun ended the local looting. (I was taking photos. There's a sequence from flat on the ground. I didn't know where the shots were coming from until the next day.) People who've been around fireworks and/or guns can tell the difference. Blanks are also distinctive but rarer -- so they'd clear the area. The sound of a shotgun racking in a shell is distinctive. Doesn't have to be a shot gun.
    Make it difficult to get on board. I like the HH catamarans which have completely closed off sugar scoops. Not sure how you'd do this, but it would be a terrific deterrent. Also if you're sailing away, under power of course, and you're being approached, head into the wind and waves making your boat rock and roll. Good luck getting on board.
    I've sailed the Bahamas, Philippines, Japan, Canada, US. The dodgiest people I saw anywhere around boats were here in the states, hanging out between the locked dock gate and the locked bathrooms, or on powerboats, drunk, stupid or both. I've traveled all over the world, a lot of it solo. Don't drink too much, don't gamble, buy/take drugs, hire prostitutes, buy 'dodgy' anything. Get a wrong vibe? Leave. People are amazing. Friendly, helpful.

    Very well presented with a number of good and interesting ideas. I have considered the following Ideas some I have on board but till now I have not had to tried any as I never sailed yet to iffy places.
    However, you can buy carbon wire for setting up an electrical fence at night around your safety lines they use them in Australia as deterrent for cattle they are run on solar charged battery unlike miles for fencing farmers need, cost is inexpensive to and easy to setup turn on and off. Also plan as well as red smoke bombs. I purchased anti-bear spray as well as old light weight netting with floats if followed at night may jam the props for the felons drop it after smoke bombing. These are ideas and I will sentup an electric fence if moored at night in a risky place. Keep up the good work and great advise. Thanks SV Skoiern IV

    Hi Ben and Ashley, thanks for the video, one thing I would like to add, is one or two LED Spotlights, Soler battery-powered lights on the top of the Mast to light up the yacht from above and the surroundings. For security purposes, it's crucial that when you want to look out you don't need to use a flashlight in an emergency you need to hide yourselves by switch off the lights inside the yacht. The LED Spotlight should have a remote control for settings but one should take the operating distance into account and also point down in such a way that you aren't disturbing your neighbours, thus the reason I mentioned the spotlight and not a floodlight. What do you think?

    Thanks for the video! Visibility usually is an advantage criminals have especially at night. Strong stroboscopic lights can mitigate that and give extra time for the crew to act. Since you have 2 young kids onboard, that might make you more of a target and also requires even more thought about what/how to protect yourselves. The best option is always staying alert and extra defensive even if it means staying away from some areas and choosing a longer route. I wish you'll never have to deal with anything more serious than a big loaded dipper. Stay safe!

If you had someone creeping onboard within close proximity to hear these sounds it might freak them out enough to run off. Plus that lazer trick after? You might not know if they've got a gun outside but they might not want to risk it if it sounds like youre armed as well.

When I travel to comp shoot I have two floor mounted gun safes in the rear seat floor ,one for my pistols and a separate one for ammunition, the laws are a lot stricter here down under. May I add if pulled over by a police officer my class of shooters licenses comes up flagged immediately even if my vehicle has two empty safes which I always leave open letting the approaching officer know they are clear and where they are , has made for some interesting interactions with trainee officers I might add. With the level of licenses I have I am reviewed ever two sometimes ever one year , fair enough I guess. Just a suggestion for you guys with using mace it definitely can be a great way to defend yourself. I recommend you both expose yourself to it so you know what to expect and how to control yourself in that situation when you’re exposed. That’s why all law enforcement, military and security will all get sprayed during training. It’s no fun but it can definitely save your life by knowing exactly what to expect. Even with no wind you still can get exposed to the effects of it. Best of luck to you all with happy, healthy and safe travels!

    I highly recommend a decent set of night vision goggles or at least a monocular. Something like a PVS14 along with thermal would tell you a lot about potential danger well in advance without letting them know you’ve spotted them. A good setup would cost as much as a dinghy, but even if it never saves your life, the view of the night sky through night vision would be well worth it! You only think you’ve seen the stars. . .
    As far as firearms, I believe I would just have to keep a 3D printer onboard and print firearms as needed. I’d have to look into the laws around guns vs gun parts/ammunition, but a barrel is easily lost in a tool box and is the only “non-printable” part required for the most basic firearm. When in danger of an “inspection” just toss the plastic overboard, throw the barrel in a tool box, and print a new one when you are in the clear. The other option would be flaregun barrel inserts (turns a basic flaregun into a small caliber pistol). It would offer the same advantage as the 3D printed option, but you wouldn’t have to throw it overboard, just remove the insert and conceal it. Downside is it is a single shot and reloading sucks. Fighting pirates with road flares and mace, just doesn’t cut it for me.
    I have zero experience with international port inspections, but I can’t believe they are thorough enough to overcome creative customized concealment. Maybe I’m wrong, but I would welcome the challenge. “Gun free” zones just seem like the ideal place for pirates to pirate and I couldn’t stand the idea of intentionally being disadvantaged in a fight that involved my loved ones. If there is going to be a fight for life or freedom, I will take every possible advantage and then cheat any way I can.

    • @mukkaar
      @mukkaar Месяц назад

      NV is not really good option, this is not military. You want to let people know they have been seen to deter them. And ultimately, you have to weight if having gun is more of an risk than not having it. After all, you can probably deter 99% of thieves just by scaring them away. And from that 1% most can probably be fought off with minor force with what they have.
      But honestly, you might as well stay at home if you are not comfortable with the risk.

    • @athhud
      @athhud Месяц назад

      @@mukkaar I didn’t say throw away your flashlights and pepper spray. . . You can’t “weigh your options” and choose the correct tools in advance, because you have no idea as to what you will have to face until you are smack dab in the middle of a predicament. Weighing your options would be deciding which tool you pick up while stepping out onto the deck. Completely abandoning the idea of using a tool before you know what challenge you face is not “weighing the options”. That is guessing and hoping for the best. I can only assume that you have zero experience with nightvision if you don’t understand how it would be very useful out on the water. Just laying on the deck looking at the stars makes it worth the cost. Everything else is a bonus.

    • @mukkaar
      @mukkaar Месяц назад

      @@athhud Lol, I have been trough service and used nv. It's very useful for seeing in dark.
      But if you want to deter someone, and also see. Flashlight is much cheaper and useful option.
      And by weighing the risk I mean that is having gun going to posses so much of an inconvenience and risk, as in being caught with it if you try to hide it. Going to be more of an inconvenience and risk than small chance of something really bad happening. Honestly you are much more likely to die off some kind of other accident, disease, storm or whatnot so you might as well use your resources and effort minimizing those instead.
      I mean if you have NV or really want one and have extra cash for it, it's a cool thing to have. But I wouldn't advice someone getting one since flashlight works just as well and is cheaper. What I would advice getting is security cameras, and have ones that can see in dark. That's actually really useful.

      @adamnolin704 as a gun owner and one who carried guns aboard in Alaska and British Columbia for brown bear protection, I'm simply stating the fact that US gun laws are unique in the world and one should not assume other countries care one iota about American gun rights or views on the way Americans view gun possession. My original statement was intended for those who are considering taking their gun aboard while sailing abroad. Those who do should know that you will have your gun quarantined once declared. Failing to declare is treated very harshly. You will likely lose your boat. The Bahamas took my speargun. Told me I could get it back when I return to that same port to check out. What's the point if you cannot have it when in their waters? Same with every island down the line all the way to Trinidad (you can't even have camouflage items in their country, not even a pink camo hat). We live by their laws as a visitor. USA rights and legal system do not follow you.
