      Meyer lemons have always impressed me with their hardiness. I've had one that got left in a dark room and unwatered for three months in winter. It was putting out blossoms when I found it and watered it.

    This is very helpful. I have a tree that I started from seed of which I got from my grandma's tree and now she is no longer and neither can we go back and get seeds from that tree because it was cut down but this is super helpful because this tree is very special and it's like a miracle because it's been growing very big and a pot for about 9 years and I'm just trying to maintain it till I can permanently plant it in a real yard of my own. My tree finally gave me fruit and flowers about 2 years ago. This video is so informative! 😀 Thank you for these tips because it's hanging on but it's lacking something

    Name it "Lemony-Snicket". Actually I came here to learn about your outdoor gardening tips and this video just came up next. NOW you've got me wanting to plant a citrus tree which I swore I would never do again because we live in the Panhandle of Florida and have to cover our trees during the winter----YES, even here in Florida!! But I'll try this just because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE LEMONS !!!

  • @mgore90
    @mgore90 Год назад +2

    It's really interesting. Here in the Southern UK, most people think you can't grow citrus because our winters are too cold. It's not that, your winters are on par with coastal Georgia. It's that our summers aren't hot enough for them to ripen. Our typical winters only get down to about 26f (once in 50 year winters = 15f). US climate zones just don't make any sense here. I'm technically in zone 9b (Northern Florida/Southern Georgia equivalent), but our summers don't even quite average 70f. A polytunnel makes it possible though. I've got satsumas, kumquats and Meyer lemons growing in my polytunnel. Never thought it was possible, but it works! It's a bit dicey, as they barely ripen before the frost kicks in, but it's so much fun to grow citrus in the UK.

    Love the video, fun and helpful. Just purchased a Meyer lemon tree and waiting to repot. We live in zone 7 TN and have this is our 2nd attempt at lemon and olive trees. Both died last year because we tried to do it in house only. I ordered citrus tone and will repot. 2 questions please. 1.It came in a 9” pot, what size do you recommend for repot? I’d like to use a 17” unless that’s too much of a jump.
    2. Sunlight - we’ve been leaving it outside in the TN heat but under a covered porch. Is direct sunlight better?
    Also, I like the knuckle test. I still feel like I don’t know how often to water.
    Have you done a container olive tree video? Thanks for the quality lessons and the laughs!

    I got a lemon tree for Christmas and I repotted it into a 20 gallon pot after about a month. (The garden center suggested to do it before April) It is in a sunny spot on our back pool deck. It had LOTS of flowering blooms, and lots of tiny lemons and one about the size of a ping pong ball. We have had an unusually chilly winter for Florida and a very gray January and February. We had a horrific windy and rainy couple of days and ALL of the leaves came off the tree. What IN the WORLD????? I have looked at it and it seems to have new blossoms but no sign of leaves. I followed your repotting video …. I have it in a terracotta pot. Please helllllllppppp. Thank you in advance.

    • @timjohnson3913
      @timjohnson3913 2 года назад +2

      Likely the tree will outlive you before producing fruit; your daughter might be able to harvest fruit from it when she is in her fourties to sixties. This is why all fruit trees are grafted or rooted from the cutting of a fruit-bearing tree. From the cutting, they will start producing fruit usually before their 3rd year.

    • @timjohnson3913

      @@3scapePhotos Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news. FYI I learned this from Byron Martin, the owner of Logee’s, who has a ton of good info on citrus care on his website and youtube channel. Especially helpful if you are growing citrus in pots. Of course, your tree could start producing next year for some reason, but it seems highly doubtful. Byron claims to have a citrus tree started from seed that took 35 or 45 years (can’t remember off the top of my head) before it started producing fruit. Think about getting a couple trees from him for fruiting. His pricing is the most reasonable I’ve seen from a source I trust (though I’m new to the game) with lemon trees as low as $15 or $20.

    • @stevenschnepp576
      @stevenschnepp576 Год назад +1

      @@timjohnson3913 That's... not terribly accurate.
      Citrus typically fruit 5-7 years after germination.
      Fruit trees are grafted because their seedlings have variable characteristics, which may or may not be desirable. That it trims a couple of years off of the time to fruit is just an added bonus.

    I have a potted lemon tree that I bought about 4 years ago when it had about 5 lemons on it. Since that time I've seen it go through beautiful, fragrant, and plentiful blooms only to produce no fruit. The blooms fell off. This summer it had 5 green orbs growing when I noticed a lot of ants on a couple of branches. I soaked it in water and let it dry. Because our temperature dipped below 55° we brought it inside and took it back out when it was warmer. The ants and whatever drew them are gone, flowers are blooming like crazy and s baby orb is forming.
    We're in 7b here in Knoxville so when should we see them turn yellow? Can I leave the tree out when temps are in the 40s like you did or did it depend on other conditions? I really enjoy your posts!

    I received a Meyer tree as a gift this year I consider myself a pretty good Gardner this is why I was given this expensive plant, did everything from day one carefully and all the leaves have turned yellow and are falling but have alot of buds and today got my first bloom, I know It's not overwatering, or underwatering, I purchased the food the plant guy at Lowe's told me to use I've done everything don't know why all the leaves are falling. Help.
    However what's funny is I planted 6 regular lemon seeds last year from just my store bought lemons 3 plants came out of 6 seeds which are now beautiful dark green abt 24 inches tall, yes I heard I probably won't get any lemons and that's fine but it's smells better than the meyer lemon plant which has no smell at all, and I did nothing special to this plant except feed this year when I repotted it. Would really appreciate your response TY

      I mean, assuming that you water them properly (they don't like to stand in water, but also don't like drought), and that there aren't any sudden weather / temperature changes around that time - if it happens yearly.
      And assuming that there's no pest / diseases involved & the tree is overall healthy.

    Hi Justin! Just now watching this but was wondering if you ever use Epsom Salt on the citrus trees for the added magnesium??

    Coffee grinds scattered on top can help get the soil acidic.

    Should you let the pot completely fry out before transplanting your Meyer lemon?

    Hello. I can't find soil conditioner. Can you recommend an equivalent from a big box store? Seems like the Nature's Choice brand you use must be only available locally. TY

    If I wanted to grow this indoors under artificial lights (LED), how many lumens would it need?
    And rather than replanting to bigger and bigger pots, couldn't you prune the roots like a bonsai?

    Justin, I put a lemon tree in a pot last Fall. It looks like some baby lemons might be forming. Should I pinch them off the first year? What is your advice? Thanks! Love your videos. I’m a new subscriber!

    1. Apartment patio facing North.
    2. It's Autumn, ZERO direct sunlight, but bright.
    3. Containers, Meyer lemon and Mexican Lime.
    Do I need grow lights??
    At night for 8 hours?

    Nice video. A lot of the leaves in my lemon tree are curling. Why is that?
