Hi! In Camarillo, CA, have a semi-dwarf Meyer lemon. It is FULL Of heavy, bushy branches and already got some fruit! Here we are in early June 2020. Is it too late for me to prune. It sure looks as if it needs it. The fruits that bloomed were deep inside. I can’t even see them or get to them! Very healthy, but too full. What should I do? Thank you so much.

I have a seedling Meyer lemon that produces lots of excellent fruit. The skin is a little thicker and not as smooth as the improved meyer, but the fruit size is large and the flavor is outstanding. It’s about 6’ tall and produces countless fruit each year. I think the fact that it’s been growing in Oregon for nearly 4 decades where there aren’t a lot of other citrus trees is the reason the seedlings from this tree make fruit that is true to the parent. I grow it on an unheated covered patio where the temp doesn’t drop much below 30. On some of the coldest winter nights it hits 28. The tree has never shown any signs of stress at that temp. I’m also able to grow sudachi here which are also seedlings and excellent. Sudachi is a yuzu and mandarin hybrid and makes juicy fruit that tastes like a lime. I bring it up because the yuzu is one of the few citrus that grow true to seed.

Hello I have a little orange tree that I grew from a cutting of the orange tree we had in our old house it was just a green little branch for about 2 1/2 years and it finally started growing leaves the past year but now it has a super long branch growing straight up and the branches underneath are not growing anymore my question is should I trim the longer branch to allow the others to grow and if yes how much should I trim?

So you don't prune your tree at all? We moved last year to house that has a well established 6 ft tall by 6 ft wide (approx) tree that is very happy and productive (probably 75 lemons this past year?). It already had flowers while we were picking fruit, so it is continually producing. We thought we should prune it, but maybe we should leave it alone...

It would be interesting to see how the tree looks in 2020. How tall will you let the tree grow with a standard root stock? I do not like my trees to get larger than what I can manage with my feet on stable ground. I am in zone 5 and there for grow my citrus in containers in a cool heated greenhouse. I am having problems with the trees dropping leaves between January and February each winter. I do not provide supplemental light and do not know if it is due to shorter day length here in Oregon or some other stress factor.

tomas jina Latex paint is designed to last forever- and when it eventually falls off the growing tree lasts a very long time in the soil. IV Organic products are an organic healthier alternative for organic gardening! And, the added oils in IV Organic 3in1 offer repellent protection again insects & rodents- another plus! I hope this helps explain?

I have what I have been told is a Meyers Lemon tree (2), a Guava tree and I believe a Mango still very unsure of this one. My question is my Meyers lemon trees are are so over grown, 1 has spider mites & rotted wood with ants (just discovered this tonight) that tree is not producing normal fruit.. The trunk of the tree is covered in moss as well as some of the branches. Is there a chance at saving these trees? I can send you some photos if you would like to see

Greatings from Denmark and thanks for sharing. I am making at pit greenhouse, and I would like to know if there is any reason why I should not companion plant lemons with avocado, pineapple and prickly pear?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  7 лет назад +3

      Hello Mikkel Jylland,
Great to hear from you-- all the way from Denmark! :-) My wife is from Sweden (Stockholm) and I hear about those long, cold winters all the time. It must be a bit warmer in your country? Please e-mail me a picture of you pit greenhouse once you complete it! Info@IVOrganics.com To answer your question, it is a great idea to companion plant a diversity of plants in your greenhouse for a so many reasons: Diversity helps to prevent the spread of disease and pests. For example, if a disease plaques your citrus, the disease (or pests) can move quickly between plants if they are in contact or close proximity to one another. Diversification of plants species can block the spread of disease and a total loss of plants. Additionally, I do recommend having some (2-3) more closely related plants such as a lemon, an orange and a grapefruit to further increase fruit size and yields (according to much research) when related species cross pollinate. Further, although Avocados are self fertile, having a 'Type A' and 'Type B' variety cross pollinating one another will increase yields by 5% to 20% according to most research! I hope this helps. Keep me posted on your gardening successes! :-)
      Charles

Thank you for taking the time.
Danish weather is something between swedish and English. It will be a small greenhouse, and not possible to keep plants far away from each other. But I will have many different plants in there while they are small. Then I will see what makes it, and what does not. Perhaps building an extra green house or making a larger and more permanent.
I bought two lemontrees. Only two feet hight with 5 lemons on each. Gave them bigger pots. Also have 1 lemon grown from seed. 2 years old. No flowers yet. Pruned it last night. And I have a tangerine that just sprouted. Will be fun to see what kind of fruit they give.

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  5 лет назад +4

      Hello hiep nguyen
! The principles are the same to for all citrus. One important goal is to have the tree create a canopy that naturally shades and protects the lower trunk & branches for over exposure to sunlight and potential sunburn. IV Organic products are available to help prevent the burn & damage during the younger years or pruning that results in an open canopy that over exposes the underlying trunk & branches. Keep me posted on your citrus growing successes!!! Charles :-)

I noticed that while you were pruning, you had two branches growing too close together, You cut off the good branch and left the sucker ? Any branch that goes straight up that has thorns are extremely bad for the tree. I am glad that you found out about not putting "compost"in the hole when you are transplanting your avocados.

@@IVOrganic I was wondering if you could help me with some advice. At the moment, I only have 2 young semi-dwarf 'Improved Meyer' trees. Both of them had blooms and some fruit developing when I got them last week. One of them looks MUCH better than the other. I decided to not transplant that one. The scraggly one was picked by my 5 year old because "it was cute" and I couldn't say no. I figured I would take on the challenge and give the little ugly duckling a happy forever home. :D My question is it OK to prune some of the young branches right now in the spring? Some are heading in the wrong direction. Should I wait until after the fruit has been harvested in the winter? One of your other responses to me which I took to heart is to not worry too much about the first available harvest but to look ahead at future harvests. That will be hard to do though because we are all so excited to see our trees with fruit! Thanks again for your wisdom and time.

Hello! I am a trained arborist who has recently moved south and started collecting potted citrus trees. Typically when pruning other types of trees, you do not want to cut into the collar of the branch as it opens the main trunk to rot and disease. Watching these instructions I wonder, do citrus trees not have this issue? I can't wait to dive in a learn more! Thank you for the video and your time!

I am the 84 year old "novice who planted three trees a few months ago, one being a lemon tree, so thank you for showing me what to do after the tree has lemons. All the leaves were blown off in January, but with all the rain, the tree has many budding flowers. A few new small leaves, but lots of flowers.....do the flowers mean there will be lots of lemons? The tree in only about two feet tall. I am so excited, guess I'll have to wait and see sigh......(smiles)

    • @caseG80

Yes flowers once pollinated will be fruit but it’s best to let your tree have a year or two to grow roots and develop before having it focus on tons of fruit. Usually you just remove the blossoms or tiny fruit it’s probably ok to leave a half dozen but young trees that are let to establish a good foundation will reward greatly within a less amount of time, cheers

Perhaps I planted it too close to the fence. The second tree I planted went nuts. I had bags and bags of wonderful fruit. Then the following year nothing. So someone told me to prune it. I did not knowing what to do but I was told 10%. Today, I have possible 2-3 dozen lemons. But nothing like my first year. So I will try your method and perhaps those IV items you have.

I watched your video this morning and spent 4 hours pruning my Meyer lemon. I don't remember how old it is....maybe 20 years. It is a under 5 ft, but many years produced well over 300 lemons. Thanks to your video I really got in there and cleaned up the dead wood and the downward spiraling branches. I hope to get to the other side tomorrow. I also have blossoms starting and a couple of small fruit. I am in Central California and between high heat, limited water, deer and squirrels it has managed quite well. I look forward to finding your products.
Our family always whitewashed the trees. My sister liked your video and
subscribed as well. Thank you. You are an excellent teacher!

Loved your videos and so glad I found you. I live in Australia and have 3 questions. 1 what is the ideal time to prune 2 what do you suggest for gall wasp. I’ll pruned those branches off after slicing open which didn’t work. The fall wasp then develops further done closer to the main trunk. Thanks again, and keep up the fantastic work.

IV Organic products are available in Australia: www.amazon.com.au/dp/B083349MNC?ref=myi_title_dp
Best time to prune is after the last chance of frost has passed your grow zone area, and before the spring growth/ bloom. For citrus, I prune 1-2 year growth immediately after winter harvest- if you have older growth to prune, it’s best to wait until the coldest nights have passed, so the wounds can begin heal shortly thereafter. Regarding the wasp, IV Organic has both (1) 7 natural oils to help repel those pests, plus (2) diatomaceous earth that will harm wasps attempting to burrow into/ out of your trees. Keep new holes coated to prevent & reduce tree injury.
And, THANK YOU PETA for the compliment! :-)
      Charles 🌱👍

I have a two year old improved Meyer in 3’ X 2’ pot. This winter( while indoors) it had numerous blooms down one limb. I barely bumped it and to my shock they ALL fell off. Why?
Now, it has but one lemon. Still green. This summer on the deck, it grew four long, tall, skinny shoots that are about 4’ taller than the main bush.
It’s Sept. May I prune it now ? I’m wanting more a ‘bush’ type tree.

There is a small open type tree protects it from 110 degree weather. I had 2 beautiful lemons last yr that were wonderful! I had it in my southern exposure garden room and it bloom awesome and has so many now but I’m not sure what to do now to save the many lemons I have! Do I need to repot it into a larger pot? It’s in a 12” pot now. It’s only 2 yrs old and came in a 8 “ pot!

Can you prune in the Fall? There’s a tree in my yard that’s prolly never been pruned. It looks like a giant bush. It’s fruiting and has green fruit right now. Also doesn’t have a predominant trunk. Looks like 3 growing like fingers almost all the way from the ground. Belongs to an elderly lady who also doesn’t seem to have picked fruit, there are a lot of dried fruit on the branches too.

I want to thank you so much for this tutorial. I have bought your white wash product and it literally saved my euraka lemon tree. I am writing because I purchase two Meyer lemon. The vendor "moon valley nursery" says they are semi-dwarf "improved" meyer. Ok my dilemma is I am still not clear on spacing and size of these trees. The Vendor said they can go as close as 5 feet apart. is that true? I can also plant 8 feet apart, but no more then that. Just how tall and wide to these trees get? Both trees have a Y shape at top. Vendor said that will make them grow wide. not sure if thats good or bad, but they look lovely that way. Thank you.

@@joeltm8697 Byron Martin from Logee’s Greenhouses says if you start a citrus from seed, you usually won’t see it bear fruit in your lifetime, which is a bit of an exaggeration. It was no significant harvest but the tree did manage to produce a few fruits. (Most died before maturity though, maybe insufficient pollination.)

I am slightly confused. If the parents of the tree are both genetically identical then would the offspring be diverse from the parent(s) genetically? I mean both the pollinators and pollinated identical. How then would a child be anything other than identical? I am not a botanist or otherwise and am not trolling to insite anger. I just do not understand how two parents with the exact same genome can produce anything other than an identical offspring in a tree, that is. Thank you. I have two trees i have grown from seed. The story is beautiful to me but I will hild iff on selling it until asked. Than you for your time.

Just last week I pruned about 5-10 of my Meyer Lemon; however, be careful that the underlying trunk & branches do not burn from over exposure to sun & whitewash the underlying trunk and branches to protect from summer sunburn, as well as winter sunscald. Hi! So six weeks ago, after watching this video I pruned my potted Meyer lemon tree and she is so happy now! She is pushing so much new growth, probably the most I have very seen her push. We have had her for 10 years. First, in huge ceramic pot at first and then transferred to a wooden whiskey barrel about three years ago. Last year was the first season we had a decent lemon harvest. I love this tree so much and I feel like with these tips, I have finally treated her the way she needed to be treated. Thanks for your help! I have the brown paint and plan to paint her soon too!

Really off putting when products are introduced all the time. Plants are independent of man made commercial products and surely there must be simp,et and more economic ways of doing gardening. So, any gardener who needs to rely on advertising products repeatedly as this guy does on his site is useless as far as I’m concerned.
