I have a seedling Meyer lemon that produces lots of excellent fruit. The skin is a little thicker and not as smooth as the improved meyer, but the fruit size is large and the flavor is outstanding. It’s about 6’ tall and produces countless fruit each year. I think the fact that it’s been growing in Oregon for nearly 4 decades where there aren’t a lot of other citrus trees is the reason the seedlings from this tree make fruit that is true to the parent. I grow it on an unheated covered patio where the temp doesn’t drop much below 30. On some of the coldest winter nights it hits 28. The tree has never shown any signs of stress at that temp. I’m also able to grow sudachi here which are also seedlings and excellent. Sudachi is a yuzu and mandarin hybrid and makes juicy fruit that tastes like a lime. I bring it up because the yuzu is one of the few citrus that grow true to seed.

Hello! I am a trained arborist who has recently moved south and started collecting potted citrus trees. Typically when pruning other types of trees, you do not want to cut into the collar of the branch as it opens the main trunk to rot and disease. Watching these instructions I wonder, do citrus trees not have this issue? I can't wait to dive in a learn more! Thank you for the video and your time!

Hi! So six weeks ago, after watching this video I pruned my potted Meyer lemon tree and she is so happy now! She is pushing so much new growth, probably the most I have very seen her push. We have had her for 10 years. First, in huge ceramic pot at first and then transferred to a wooden whiskey barrel about three years ago. Last year was the first season we had a decent lemon harvest. I love this tree so much and I feel like with these tips, I have finally treated her the way she needed to be treated. Thanks for your help! I have the brown paint and plan to paint her soon too!

@@IVOrganicOK Charles so our tree grew to 7 feet tall and is covered in fruit! Yay! Unfortunately she toppled over in the windy storms we’ve had up here in the Bay Area. I’m at a loss. Do I trim her now even though rain is forecasted all week or wait for dryer weather? I don’t want to make her vulnerable to fungus and root. When you have a moment, any advice would be helpful. 😊

I watched your video this morning and spent 4 hours pruning my Meyer lemon. I don't remember how old it is....maybe 20 years. It is a under 5 ft, but many years produced well over 300 lemons. Thanks to your video I really got in there and cleaned up the dead wood and the downward spiraling branches. I hope to get to the other side tomorrow. I also have blossoms starting and a couple of small fruit. I am in Central California and between high heat, limited water, deer and squirrels it has managed quite well. I look forward to finding your products.
Our family always whitewashed the trees. My sister liked your video and

Are you raking in a citrus granular fertilizer? I sprinkle it on the surface around the drip line of the tree and then RAKE it into the soil. I do this 1-2 times a year. It helps A LOT. Also you might see if your soil is a good PH or if there are any mites or pests on the leaves.

@@IVOrganic I was wondering if you could help me with some advice. At the moment, I only have 2 young semi-dwarf 'Improved Meyer' trees. Both of them had blooms and some fruit developing when I got them last week. One of them looks MUCH better than the other. I decided to not transplant that one. The scraggly one was picked by my 5 year old because "it was cute" and I couldn't say no. I figured I would take on the challenge and give the little ugly duckling a happy forever home. :D My question is it OK to prune some of the young branches right now in the spring? Some are heading in the wrong direction. Should I wait until after the fruit has been harvested in the winter? One of your other responses to me which I took to heart is to not worry too much about the first available harvest but to look ahead at future harvests. That will be hard to do though because we are all so excited to see our trees with fruit! Thanks again for your wisdom and time.

I live in Upstate New York. We bought a Lemon tree two years ago and planted it in a 12” pot. This year we had about 15 flowers but all the lemons except 2 died and fell off. The 2 that survived are doing well and growing. We trimmed some of the tree after the flowers and fruit died off. The tree is moved outside for the summer months where the tree gets a few hours of direct sun and then is in shade the rest of the day. The tree went through a time of leaf dropping. We thought the tree was dying. Once we moved the tree outside, it blossomed with more new leaves. Today we moved the tree back inside because the nights are getting cold. The tree will stay inside until next Spring when the weather gets warm and no frost will happen. I’m sure we will go through the dropping leaves again without the summer weather. The tree is in front of a sliding glass door facing South. We did fertilize the tree last Fall. Should the same pruning be done for and inside/outside Lemon Tree?
    Thank you.
    Richard

Earlier today I watched a video where on "Clone your favorite plants and trees". I am the 84 year old "novice who planted three trees a few months ago, one being a lemon tree, so thank you for showing me what to do after the tree has lemons. All the leaves were blown off in January, but with all the rain, the tree has many budding flowers. A few new small leaves, but lots of flowers.....do the flowers mean there will be lots of lemons? The tree in only about two feet tall. I am so excited, guess I'll have to wait and see sigh......(smiles)

Yes flowers once pollinated will be fruit but it’s best to let your tree have a year or two to grow roots and develop before having it focus on tons of fruit. Usually you just remove the blossoms or tiny fruit it’s probably ok to leave a half dozen but young trees that are let to establish a good foundation will reward greatly within a less amount of time, cheers

I have a Meyers lemon tree, that had a very small root base, planted it in the ground in late October 2019. Soil is sandy, with clay, and lots of rocks In Bullhead city AZ. Thru the winter it dropped all it's leaves. I made a shade box for it to keep it out of the direct sun in the dry 115 degree heat. It's about 3 feet wide rounded. The problem is, it grew 5 or 6 new leaves, and many new buds, they all died back. Last week I put mushroom compost from home depot. Then I hammered a citrus fertilizer spike. Watered it real good. It started to sprout all over the place like it was full steam ahead. I wait two days. I water it real good again yesterday and now the little tiny new growth is browning and dying back before it even gets started. I have the trunk painted white, with a barrier around it to keep the compost off the trunk. I'm thinking of getting it out of the ground putting in a pot and returning it to home depot. I put alot of tlc with this and I'm agitated with the watering process and the lousy results. some of the new sprouts are in good shape, but for the most part I'm not sure if it's the mushroom compost from home depot, which might have to much salt? or it's from to much water here in the 110 degree dry desert? It's almost June way past spring and nothing has sprung on this tree. Any Idea's?

Pick before you prune, some of those branches were pointing down only because they had fruit pulling the main branch down.

I wish I found your video before I butchered my Meyer Lemon. I have 2 Meyer lemon trees. My first had fruit the first year but not much. But nothing for years. Perhaps I planted it too close to the fence. The second tree I planted went nuts. I had bags and bags of wonderful fruit. Then the following year nothing. So someone told me to prune it. I did not knowing what to do but I was told 10%. Today, I have possible 2-3 dozen lemons. But nothing like my first year. So I will try your method and perhaps those IV items you have.

If you’re so inclined, after zesting, you can take the remainder (cut into sm pieces is best) & put them in a jar of either vinegar or alcohol depending on the tincture you would like. I use extract-ohol organice alc (90%) or organice apple cider vinegar may be good bc vinegar is excellent at extraction of minerals, specifically… you can use either as a concentrate to make a natural/organic & toxin-free spray cleaner around your house (adding some tea tree &/or neem along with other essential oils is fun but not necessary). D-limonene is the best pesticide, degreaser, deodorizer, etc & is used industrially as well

A good tip to remember when pruning is to always try to prune at the 'Branch Collar' if there is one , so the tree can wall off the wound over a period of time, preventing rot and disease within the trunk/branches of the tree.

Loved your videos and so glad I found you. I live in Australia and have 3 questions. 1 what is the ideal time to prune 2 what do you suggest for gall wasp. I’ll pruned those branches off after slicing open which didn’t work. The fall wasp then develops further done closer to the main trunk. Thanks again, and keep up the fantastic work.

IV Organic products are available in Australia: www.amazon.com.au/dp/B083349MNC?ref=myi_title_dp
Best time to prune is after the last chance of frost has passed your grow zone area, and before the spring growth/ bloom. For citrus, I prune 1-2 year growth immediately after winter harvest- if you have older growth to prune, it’s best to wait until the coldest nights have passed, so the wounds can begin heal shortly thereafter. Regarding the wasp, IV Organic has both (1) 7 natural oils to help repel those pests, plus (2) diatomaceous earth that will harm wasps attempting to burrow into/ out of your trees. Keep new holes coated to prevent & reduce tree injury.
And, THANK YOU PETA for the compliment! :-)

My two favorite recipes for lemons are 1) Lemon Delicious and 2) Lemon marmalade (save all of your rinds in the freezer until you are ready to make marmalade. It tastes just as good!) Recipes can be easily found via Google search. The marmalade makes great gifts... it’s so delicate in flavor and only available homemade. I think it’s much better than orange marmalade, but I’ve never tried making that homemade. Lemon Delicious is apparently a big deal in Australia. It’s sort of a combination cake/soufflé/pudding. It’s a fantastic after dinner offering because it’s considered by guests to be a “light dessert.” Plus, as the name hints... it’s delicious!!!

      Hello Janice Vervoort,
Citrus require very little to no pruning; however, I am of the opinion that even citrus gain a lot by being pruned by as a little as 5-20% each year to: (1) have plant that is strengthened by way of pruning, (2) removing crossing branches to maximize the amount of light on the structure of the tree, (3) control the shape: bush vs. tree form, (4) etc... etc.... The best time to prune, if you decide to prune, is between the last frost and the main bloom of the tree. However, because your plant is so young, you may want to wait another year-- And just let it keep growing strong. I can better advise you if you send me a picture to Info@IVOrganics.com Thank you! :-)
      Charles
