  • By building a detailed constructability3D model of this new custom home in Colorado, and importing the roof trusses from the truss vendor, we were able to identity numerous issues BEFORE the trusses were ordered. The truss vendor corrected a dozen issues until they were perfect, saving this builder $$$$ in time and unnecessary expense!

Awesome work John. You'd think the truss manufacturer would see these issues when they are looking at it in 3D too. Btw, I haven't had consistent results with importing a DWG from Mitek. Sometimes, all the trusses are exploded so I just get a bunch of 2x4s, other times, I'm able to retain each truss type as a component (which is great). Have you found the same thing? You mentioned that you do some cleanup on the trusses...

Thanks! We import trusses from all over the country, so we definitely see a variety. Some are sticky geometry completely, which sucks trying to group them when you have overlapping trusses. And, as you said, some come in as components which is awesome. Seems like everytime there are duplicate chords that bloat the file and can be deleted, but that takes valuable time, so we usually leave it. We always refer back to the layout and individual truss drawings (so as not to assume the 3D model we get is correct). I usually run Fredo's auto reverse faces and sometimes cleanup - add wood texture to 2xs and metal to gang nails. Sometimes we do not get gang nails, which is fine, but you know I like the realism :)

You forgot to mention all the negativity you avoid. We've do the same type of review on trusses with our apartment buildings. Huge help. Yes, MiTek is what 99% of the truss manf. use. Nice video.

Thanks Steve! Indeed we find issues on every job, some minor, some major, but at the end of the day, they have the correct trusses and smooth build, plus they have an awesome model to use during construction! Hope things are going well

Hello I am new to your channel, great content!
But what I am more amazed is how you navigate through the model, do you use any special hardware? I would be glad to know. It seems so smooth.
Sorry my english! Great channel, subbed!
