John, have you ever looked into using a drone for photogrammetry to get your as built condition of contours (to create surface model) and an Orthomosaic that you could drape over your surface model? i have done this with success using dronedeploy, autocad and sketchup. your total station would produce better spot elevations but the drone data is relatively good especially if you are using an RTK drone like an older DJI phantom 4 RTK (easy and cheap to acquire now as its outdated to the new drones)
thanks for all your awesome info!

Thanks Jesse! I would love to get into the drone work. We use a Trimble RPT 600 to capture topos, unless the site is heavily wooded. For the example I demonstrated, it is a job I am pricing and may not get, so I figured I would use the free information (2D drawing) and show how to convert to 3D. We did pick up a DJI drone but only using it for capturing drone footage of our jobs for progress, etc. Cool tech out there!

Why you didn’t import the DWG direct from survey? Thanks

Because the only file available was a PDF. My client could not get any DWG files. I obviously prefer the cad files when available. Thanks!
