I am a 2016 Olympic Alternate and former NCAA athlete and have deferred my senior year at the University of Utah to come back to elite gymnastics and try for a spot on the 2021 Olympic Team. This channel documents my journey and gives insight into the life of someone preparing for the Olympics!

It’s so nice to be able to see the side of the sport. As a former gymnast and long time spectator it’s nice to be able to see the behind the scenes for Olympic trials and everything that leads up to it. Thank you for sharing so much of your journey to Olympic trials!

It's been amazing to see how much work and training really goes into creating these beautiful 20 seconds to 3 minute routines all elite gymnasts manage to make look so effortless. Also, fully recovering from CoVid pneumonia and making it to trials? Super-freaking-human.

It happens in my own home daily. I bring it down and my husband turns it back up. It’s Summer and I’m a woman of a certain age that needs to be “cooler” than warmer. Cheers 🍻 to being older, wiser and turning the thermostat down! 😊
How incredible of you to post video during this hectic week. I meant to comment on your last video where you were not feeling great physically: you dug your heels in and got through, looking great doing it. I'm not a gymnast (other sports though) but could really see the great power and speed in your routines. I think you have that bit of "extra" that comes with all your experience and mental toughness that you gained from learning to love the sport again.
Remember, you deserve to make this Olympic team, trust your training, and leave it all out there on the podium. YOU'VE GOT THIS!!

It's so cool that RUclips allows everyone to see behind the scenes of people living lives we'll never get to experience. I'll never walk out onto an arena like that for the Olympic Trials, but seeing someone else do it on a video is the next best thing! Good luck MyKayla!
The chocolate milk thing is real. I wrote a research paper on it in my exercise science degree and got 98%, so you can trust me 😂. Try to drink it within 20 minutes of finishing (so while stretching) to take advantage of glycogen replenishing.
Chocolate milk also helps with breastmilk production if there are any struggling mamas out there reading this.😉
Totally agree on the chocolate milk...very helpful for recovery. Runners also drink it a lot for recovery.
@@ddpg9976 it's absolutely not. Coconut water replenishes electrolytes and is basically negligible in carbs and protein, which is actually what you need for recovery. Electrolytes are absolutely not the most important thing in recovery, particularly with an anaerobic sport such as gymnastics. Recovery is about being able to, number 1, replenish glycogen stores in the muscles, you have 20 minutes to do this most effectively post workout and the simple sugars in liquid form in the milk and sweetener are ideal for this. Number 2 priority is supplying protein for protein synthesis, which is how your muscles repair themselves after a workout.
You know that feeling then next day after a super hard workout where your limbs feel dead? This is usually because of glycogen stores not being replenished properly (within 20 minutes of finishing your workout and the right type of sugar being used). Without this, power is severely reduced the next day, and this is detrimental and dangerous for a gymnast.
A healthy diet will supply all the electrolytes needed for an anaerobic sport like gymnastics done in air conditioning and there isn't the same timing needs. Electrolytes need replenished from sweating, gymnasts barely sweat since it's an anaerobic sport. Thus, the requirements for recovery are glycogen replenishment and protein synthesis.

Yes!! I recently did an internship with a large dairy company that works with farmers and brands across the US, and I was absolutely shocked when I learned how good milk is for athletes (I’ve always hated milk lol so I never cared to learn much about it)

I love how all the girls seem so supportive of each other and genuinely have good relationships with each other even though they're all competing for the same spots. I haven't seen a single clip of anybody not laughing or smiling or generally having a good time

Just left the trials...great day for Mykayla, consistent on everything, in 4th after day one, and she looked happy! Talked to her dad and brother after the competition and the achilles is holding up! Great night of gymnastics and looking forward to Sunday! Good luck, Mykayla!
