In this two-part “Hey Joe” guitar lesson series, I will show you how to play this classic Jimi Hendrix song note-for-note.
“Hey Joe” was his first single and was truly the song that introduced the great Jimi Hendrix to the world and the rest is history.
In the first video lesson will demonstrate how to play the intro and the chords of the song. It is also a little lesson on how to play Hendrix style chord playing and to create your own chord variations just like he does. It makes for some really beautiful stuff.
In the second lesson video I will show you note-for-note how to play Jimi’s killer guitar solo.
Enjoy!

TODAY I LEARNED MY FIRST HENDRIX SONG! This has changed my whole world :p
Congratulations!!
Well, Didn't Billy Roberts play this first?
@@almost1889 idk who billy roberts is but as far as i know this is a cover song, hendrix didn't actually invent this song.
@@almost1889 what relevance does that have to OP’s comment? They’re pleased they’ve managed to learn a Hendrix song. They never said anything about Hendrix coming up with it.
YEAH!
Carl is my go to teacher when i need to know the trick of the song, thanks Carl your a very good guitar teacher, and your time and skill is very much appreciated.
Hey Joe, Jimmy. A lot of people are teaching the song and the solo, it's great to improve, one of my favorite songs. I have been playing a long time. Now I am learning solos, I like to thank all of the people, that is teaching solos. It's helping me a lot.
Rock on friend, follow your dreams and find your peace! Rock on and much love 🧡 ❤ 💙 💕
@@mikehunt5134 Thank you very much.
@@johnlyons8842 Ron Jeremy is that you?!
As so many people have commented, you have a very natural way of explaining and understanding music, thankyou. Very beneficial music lessons!
This is the greatest intro of alltime. First thing I wanted to learn as soon as I took up guitar.
Fantastic lesson. You are one of the best teachers ive seen on youtube.
Yeh second take on the sweet child o line solo was perfection. And this is bang on too. Just became my go to RUclips teacher. 🔥
Much better than Marty's version. He makes things confusing sometimes. Thanks for the clarity.
Brilliant lesson! I remember trying to learn this note for note and giving up with it but the way you explain it is just fantastic, thanks! Looking forward to the solo.
amazing lessons. very easy for players and without much explanation. keep teaching man. you are a great professor.
I really appreciate your videos. I particular like that you encourage people not to give up by saying things like “don’t worry about playing it note for note”.
Thanks for all the accurate and easy to watch videos. It's a lot of work!
Hendrix rocks...thanks for this one!!
Love it. So much in here and not too difficult.
I love how in all your videos you have more than one view of what's going on. I'm a visual learner so trying to teach myself how to play with RUclips videos with only 1 angle gets frustrating at times. Also, love the strat. I have a HSS brown sunburst and I love it!
Jimi had a great style of playing still one of the best his guitar playing is so groovy great song
Really helped make it simple I was always using the opened chord method you show but I like the other way for adding the embellishments in many thanks for that!
I love your teaching methods. you are a great teacher. thank you sooo very much.
Outstanding! Love your lessons. Thanks.
You teach songs very accurately great work love this channel
awesome lesson, perfect camera angles and great quality. It is rare to find a good guitar lesson for great songs and have each hand have a camera on it. To me, that is the most effective way I learn the song. Thank you!!!
Thank you for your teaching, and your nuance of Jimi style...
Yessss ive wanted to learn this so badly :) that's for sharing!!
Thanks man appreciate your time I haven't played in years took me awhile to get a good guitar and amp again never thought I would be able to play again due to an injury had a teacher years ago that taught like you so glad I found your videos
What a legend hendrix was!
Great lesson dude, really helped
Brill tution..ive been playing this badly for years..finally got some new tricks for it👍
Love all the fills, thanks for the lesson.

Great explanation
great Lesson carl
You are the best thanks again
I got to 8 min before saying "f that" theres just so much going on...no matter what i do...ever i will never sound like Hendrix....great lesson tho just makes me appreciate how advanced Hendrix was and how much he could do to turn 5 chorrds into a complex work of art.
Great lesson on one of Jimi's best. Love the sound you get on that strat!!!
that was fan tastic! do you think you could do castles made of sand in the near future?
Yes! At last more Hendrix!
Thanks for this lesson. It shows other details of him embellishments
Thanks!
very good instruction,,, love it! man, keep doing' watcha doing...what a good viral!!!
merci beaucoup tres utile bruno
Thank you
Hello Carl,
Excellent lesson. You make it look easy.
How do you get the Hendrix sound? What kind of amp and pedals are you using?
Best regards
There's several theories, but showed to me by an old guy in his 80's. Had a similar set up. An old fender 2x10 vac-tube amp. (Had to warm up first). A wah pedal that had a certain resistor in the variable switch that was "fried". And the reverb setting at about 1/3. It had an auditorium sound. Played off the middle / neck pick-ups. *hope it helps
There was something about the amp, connections, guitar (all old equipment) that there was a back ground static sound that sounded like a light rain falling.
Hello what kind of effect and amp do you use to have this sound please ?
thanks so much
Please do a Red House lesson. That would be wonderful
I love your guitar, is that a 57 re-issue ? I have a 1984 57 re-issue with a Dimarzio HS3 in in the bridge position which looks very similar to the one you are playing in your Hendrix Hey Joe lesson. I love the way it sounds and looks and have owned it since around 1987.
German Mejia It is an Eric Johnson Stratocaster (signature edition)
very good
Thankily dankily!
You give great lessons. I like that you dont spell out each note on the chord . alot of jazz lessons have the instructor spelling out how to make a G major7. If you dont know how to make a G M7 your not ready to play jazz. Your lessons are very good straight to the point it doesnt open with a 5 minute solo then 10 minutes of explaining chord theory for tw.o shapes. Mental masturbation durring lessons sucks
This isn’t jazz lmao
Thanks
ou are very good teacher :)
Hi man, do you mind me asking what pickups you're using there? Thanks
thx a lot .
You are best, I am very like to watch your videos and I'm learning to play the music on the guitar Please could you take a video from ACDC honey roll? Please
Now I finally comprehend the Hendrix greatness
Haha Same here. I’m flat out playing it exactly the same every time let alone just winging it every bar
Stellar lesson as always, thank you Carl - you've certainly helped me learn many songs and I appreciate that!
I'd like to throw out a request for a song a couple songs.

graet lesson carl!
can you teach voodoo child?
Hey, do think you could possibly do Slash's interpretation of this song, especially the solos, but the whole song would be great too. Thanks a lot for all the vids, man!
Kept meaning to thank you for this amazing lesson. One of the best Hendrix lessons I've seen with the fills and nuances. Nailed it. Thank you.
What are the chances you can do the first 5 parts of shine on you crazy diamond??
yessss

Jimmy was excessively awesome.
Hey Carl! Great lesson! I saw the Yellow Ledbetter video has 700 likes now. Would you mind teaching the solo?
Thanks!
Carl, do you have any troubles maintaining control when strumming with a Jazz III? I love them for leads but I have had so many fly out of my hand when strumming chords and such. Great lesson
I'd have to say from person experience they do slip out of your hands a little when strumming. Try getting a knife and safely cutting the fate end of the puck in a cross etch pattern for a little more grip
That's a good idea, thanks for the tip
By any chance would you do freedom
I know this is 7 years old but I have to ask. 5:11 mark where you switching between C and G. Your using your pinky finger to bar the C? I find it impossible to have my thumb anywhere near the low e string and make a clean bar for the c chord. That’s a tough one
Lol that star spangled banner intro when you arpeggiated the G Chord.
Can you please do Roy Buchanan's version of this?
damn you play like jimi i mean lots of peaple underestimate him you can notice a little tad rush in their playing but you have the exact timing its so satisfying
Smokey Bear k
Can i improvised that hendrix hammer or slide chords or whatever?
Great job! Thanx. Respect! I tried a different way....@
cool
Went from grunge, to folk, to Hendrix with his bluesy rock
Sounded like whole lotta love at the end riff
Preston Emmons *whole lotta love sounded like hey joe
Same key!
B d b d e e e
Your strat looks exactly like my E series MIJ.
those embellishments on 9:00 woww
Can you make a tutorial on the guitar solo for Purple Rain by Prince? PLEASE!!??
good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do stone free please
Is there any way you could redo this lesson, but not at a break neck pace? I love the time and care you take to teach songs-like in your more recent song tutorial, Dont Fear The Reaper. I think this song deserves that same level of attention.
nah, it's good as it is, simple quick and useful
JUST LEARN IT OR DONT
