My favourite in C&C is having a wall of Obelisk of Light towers to pick off the would be raiding parties and then crush the enemy base with overwhelming force
I don't understand why people always cite Generals as a top C&C game. The setting is boring AF and it has never run correctly for me either on old or later hardware. Everything up through RA2 was top-shelf, but I think the absolute peak of the series was TibSun. :)
They are finally, FINALLY, after a DECADE of struggle, making a real Command and Conquer spiritual successor that actually fills the boots. I'm very excited.
"The remnants" is very good term. Because technically it's much more clunky and waaaay lower quality in both graphics and gameplay. Even locomotion and pathfinding - algorythms like classic A*, flow-field, Navmesh, etc. so I have no idea why the hell they still can't handle this properly - ESPECIALLY with such simplifications like no terrain deformation. Sadly, but for me Petroglyph doesn't have much in common with Westwood.
Dune 2 blew my mind when it came out because every unit was different. All the other games out at the time, same units, different colour. Not Dune 2, it was amazing, the story was great, all of it, fun. Thank you Westwood Studios. Great memories... Sadly EA swallowed them up and that was that :(
An army goosesteps, a man shouts an undecipherable order, bass guitar kicks in, goosestepping intensifies, lead guitar kicks in and the steps merge with the drums *\o/* Red Alert Hell March so fucking good. We used to sit up for days on end playing LAN games of C&C titles, aww man so good. Of course as soon as we'd set up our defences and built armies the LAN would lose sync but God damn take me back
Really liked 8 bit armies, absolutely loved what they did with the C&C Remastered Collection. As Tempest Rising currently seems to be in a precarious state(what with the recent shenanigans surrounding their publisher and all), I'm very happy to have this to tide me for a moment.
Am liking the new 'shorter review' format. Suits my aging ADD (biden-eria). Good one, er, um...Dave - keep up the good work! (now where is the exit.... button)
The grand old days of gaming. What a time to be a live. I bought 8-bit Armies way back when and did a decent job to get me that old RTS feeling! 9-bit looks cool aF.
Mac: You shouldn’t be surprised at all! You produce awesome, honest (which sadly is a USP nowadays) & funny content for non-daft people. Love it. Never stop!
You know what i really want in an RTS? the Tom Clancy's Endwar style Pokémon-esc unit system. I love the idea of promoting a unit and seeing them get stronger, and the idea of permadeath - ohhh i love it
As cool as it is I really want them to make a game that's graphically and mechanically similar to Command & Conquer 3. The franchise's greatest game and greatest send off with Kane's Wrath. That's the dream, it's my favourite. It was so ahead of it's time and still holds up today. It has not aged bad at all. I remember back when I was worried if my computer could handle it lol. It's just as amazing as I remember playing it today. A timeless classic.
Ugh that game was the worst. Missions designed to be completed in ten minutes or less. Compared to RA or TD where a single mission could take hours if you took your time.
Quick question. Does anybody know if this one has cutscenes or any kind of story? That was the biggest part of what was missing with 8 bit armies for me.
Had a very quick go at this following the review from Mack. Seems pretty good. AI easy didn't just fall over dead when I got near it... in fact it destroyed everything I sent in.
We need more RTS games where vehicles have convincing movement. Like Company of Heroes. Seeing hordes of tanks move so unnaturally, is a bit disappointing. Even worse when you see armoured cars moving like a fast tank rather than a 4-wheeled vehicle.
I recall playing Red Alert at sub 10 years old when it was brand new. Knowing the recognised anything I did would be outstanding. They did amazing games and were such a blast.
Remember the Red Alert 2 intro, where it said "Westwood Studios proudly presents..." I'm like "damn right you're proud, rightfully so!"... and then EA murdered our beloved C&C, those miserable fucks. This title looks like a good, straightforward RTS. Thank you for the review, Mack. I've been looking for some good RTS's after the void those cunts at EA left us with. Petroglyph made Forged Battalion which was kind of shit and Grey Goo which was totally forgettable, but if you enjoyed this game, it deserves a chance.
I am not buying new games very often these days, due to the behaviour of the gamestudios and publishers with DRM and paid content crap nowadays. But as an old gamer, which visited once the Westwood Studios in Las Vegas before the closure due to the fact, that greedy EA had swallowed this fantastic game dev, and loved all of the C&C Games until Red Alert II and C&C Tiberian Sun, and of course, Renegade, I absolutely support the Petroglyph team. I have bought all of the 8Bit titles on the Xbox One/X and also on PC. And this game was an instabuy for me.
@@phutureproof I was just curious because that was what showed up in the graphics tab. But he was seemingly playing in 1080p when (from what I could gather) that monitor is a 1440p monitor.
Its not a challenge when you are forced every mission to do any objective in 10 minutes. And the way the objectives were in 8-bit Armies you were supposed to win every map in campaign in 10 minutes if you wanted to get all the objectives done which is no fun.
Please Mac! Check out Call to arms Gates of Hell. Its janky, its niche, I think you'd love it. Ww2 rts made with love. Please mac they deserve the attention.
It looks like a cheap copy of Red Alert, way too boring for me. Cant we do any better than a cheap copy after 20 years? Looks like there is far too little variation to be fun. There is like no unique twist to it or anything, a bit like someone making a spiritural successor to COD1 with just decent visuals but the exact same thing then calling it a day.
I honestly missed the original when this came out years ago. Just downloaded it after watching your 8 bit review. The minute it said welcome back commander i nearly fell off my chair. It is good to have an RTS game which remembered why the rts genre popped off in the first place. The whole marketing of this genre was about creating large armies and it was revolutionary. In recent years RTS games have tried too hard to be all clever and technical and the gameplay just becomes boring. The c&c3 reboot years ago managed to get it right then in subsequent patches due to "professional" rts players the game become slow and clunky and ra3 the economy ground to a halt and the units did too much. Good to see an rts that remembers how to rts properly and remembers its a game
I always base build and turtle as well. It's my go to strategy in most games.
Yeah hiding behind a wall of turrets and building up an army is special :)
same here
My favourite in C&C is having a wall of Obelisk of Light towers to pick off the would be raiding parties and then crush the enemy base with overwhelming force
Every RTS where you can't turtle sucks ;)
Best Turtle RTS = supreme commander
Not a big fan of the 8-bit/9-bit series though.
In Generals there is a turtling general too. Fun was had.
Westwood devs watching a lifelong fan boy is legit rewarding
About to purchase Dark Forces Remaster :)
Hell yes!
25 quids ?! 🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔
No its not worth
I wanna hear the fkkkkkkkn words
I like this format it's great I can look at buying more games now
Although this is cute and everything I really wish we would get something like C&C: Generals instead of this.
I don't understand why people always cite Generals as a top C&C game. The setting is boring AF and it has never run correctly for me either on old or later hardware.
Everything up through RA2 was top-shelf, but I think the absolute peak of the series was TibSun. :)
You can actually play generals right now. Problem solved.
Little girls are cute. This is not.
@@Archangelm127 One issue I had with Generals is it borrows elements from Starcraft.
Just buy Act of War, it's C&C Generals in Tom Clancy mode and it actually runs on modern hardware.
They are finally, FINALLY, after a DECADE of struggle, making a real Command and Conquer spiritual successor that actually fills the boots. I'm very excited.

Love the reviews sir. Keep em coming. Nice to see smaller games. Most everyone just does the major games.
He has always fixated on what he wants which is typically indie games so you must be new here.

i play it on xbox still . Just skirmish vs Ai .
I used to play a custom version of normal tiberian sun on pc in early 2000's .

Good intro to rts, after which graduate to company of heroes for in depth rts competitive game.

Great! Can you make a review on this rts: last train home
game is looking great only gripe i have is being able to instantly plop down buildings right in the middle of combat directly next to enemy units
Petroglyph shared your review of 9-Bit Armies just a few days ago 😁👍
looks good, i wonder if modding will take off with custom maps and such? thats always the best part of online rts imo
How does the MP compare to C&C remaster?
What are the main reasons for buying this one instead of just the 8-bit armies package though?
Boats!
option to remove timer and im sold.
Don't worry about the timer, it it's more of an optional objective type thing. It doesn't have any affect on the gameplay.

Cool review, but there _is_ kind of a conflict of interest here bc you know the devs; i am glad that you disclosed this

The what? Is this a thing that is happening?
i see you named your character uhtred, were you dissapointed by the last kingdom movie too?
Red Alert Vibes.....Were you telling the enemy to "Chew on this" in your best Sonja voice.... :p
She was called Tanya in my region.
I’d love a Yuri’s revenge for this :p just without the cringe, but nostalgic game scenes haha 😅
12.79 GBP on Steam for me! Buying this RIGHT NOW! Mack, we must be about the same age 'coz i was a mad C&C (RA2 favourite) until EA destroyed it.
I'm going to be buying the original 8-bit armies from good old games.

Maan I want to support Petroglyph but I just can't get into this artstyle and theme.

You don't like that an RTS has challenges in it? You're such a filthy casual Mac.
