9-Bit Armies is the newest game from veteran studio Petroglyph Games, and it launches into Steam early access today. I think it's a pretty great little RTS, but it's not all perfect...

Error at 5:30. This isn't a departure from the classic loop, this is the classic loop. In old C&C games you could only train units from a single production facility of that type, designated as you 'primary', which could also be switched. You would also receive a boost in training speed for each additional building of this type.

Makes it worse that he called it a pretty unique mechanic. So unique its only in every C&C game and copies. Gonna need to re earn his nerd card after this.

the time reduction of muti production buildings was in the original C&C as well, so this is very much C&C. It was Total Annulation that made people get used to muti production making units individually. Building multiple buildings was another TA addition, not a OG C&C thing, it was RA2 that added the ability to at least build 2 things at once, defensive and main. Generals did the TA thing of having workers, so you could do several buildings at once.

Does the campaign have a real story with missions having voice acting, events, character interactions and basically everything that C&C more or less had from the beginning? I really missed that in the 8-Bit games. There was just a small wall of text before the start and the missions stayed mostly the same from beginning to end.

@@SeanUCFI hope that there will be at least a little more than that. It doesn't need much. Just some average voice actors and in engine cutsences or even some blocky prerendered stuff before the missions. I don't mind if the writing is cheesy. But since this clearly tries to catch the spirit of classic C&C it's just not the same for me without it.

I'm unsure what to think about this game. I've played in a lot of RTS before, other C&C sequels and blizzard's entries for example. And I've played 8-bit armies\hordes\invaders. Based on my experience it felt like a cash grab. It was 8-bit version boiled down to stupidity clone of an another game. Very generic. The games themself were kinda good visually and in a technical side.
Currently I'm completing the C&C tiberium dawn campaign and I'm loving it. 8-bit and 9-bit army seems to be closest to that. You see, even the first oldest C&C (which was the simplest in the series) has more variety and fun elements than 8-bit armies. And judging on the surface level based on this video, it is still better than 9-bit army. Old C&C has interesting unit design, it has different projectiles and it's system is not boiled down to few rules. For example GDI grenadeer is good anti-infantry, as well as flamethrower for the nod. But flamethrower is more AoE suicidal unit, and grenadier is more ranged and microable. Their factions really diverse, with kinks everywhere. In 8-bit army there were two generic sides, as well in other 8-bit games. It was the choice like scout, tank, heavy tank, rocket launcher. Also when it does 90% of the first C&C and nothing more, no improvements - that's sad.
As of 9-bit army, I'll probably buy it, because I think there's not many RTS, and I want to try it in hope that they will change. I still think it is just a cash grab. I still can't see a variety or uniqueness, which in my opinion is the bread in butter of any game. They've added a lot more units. But they still look kinda similar to each other...
Petroglyph can do better, they've made Grey Goo almost 10 years ago, I think their last unique game.

Well, looks like your finger was on the money, it's under $20 and has a 10% off introductory offer.
As a player of 8-Bit Armies, my biggest gripe was just the feeling of the units and their respective time to kill. They felt... Chunky, if that makes any sense? It didn't feel right but I also think I'm just so used to the hard counter rock paper scissors of the original Command and Conquers that anything that takes longer than 3 seconds to die against it's respective counter is a bit weird to me.

I've bought a copy of Iron Harvest + expack for 8 bucks American on a Steam sale.
CrossFire: Legion for only 3, and its postlaunch support is sporadic, yet strong.

Man i follow plenty of RTS channels and i swear, i am so sick of early access. Every time i see a video on an interesting game, surprise, it's early access with no plans in sight for a proper launch.
Yes, i'm ranting for no reason, i'm old and grumpy.

I hated 8bit armies. It was a rush, unit spam and murder ball game, an RTS without the S part. I hope this plays more in line with C&C but by the footage it still looks like a spam fest with a lobotomized AI so hard pass.

What irritates me about this game is the fact that it is a senseless spamming and throwing of masses of units at the opponent. That's it. See who can produce the most units and keep on sending them without a pause. It is mindless and childish. There is no subtlety. No time to work out tactics or strategy. It doesn't matter. Just produce, produce and produce units and throw them at the opponent.

I guess I am still gonna try it, but pixel graphics do not have to be ugly!
