Part of my Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) project Playlist: • Taking Tiger Mountain ... Video I made MOSTLY with Gifs and pics I found on the net.
"This song started from a dream and I stayed at the Drake Hotel in New York with a girl named Randi N --- I had a dream about her and a group of other girls (Randi and the Pyramids) and the kids singing. He was a kind of astronaut, but with all the psychological aspects of a sailor. There are two interesting things about this song. The first is that it was made in a circular fashion: the main part of the song is a sequence of three chords that moves around a pattern of four meters something like this: 1231, 2312, 3123, 1231, 2312, 3123 etc. This means that the song is always pushed in a peculiar way. There are two hidden guitar phrases at the beginning of the track that give the game. The guitar solo at the end is also circular, but in another sense there is a special treatment on the guitar that makes it rotate in and out of phase. If you listen to it in monophony you will find that the guitar continues to disappear. The circular effect is louder on the headphones. ... The other weird thing about this song is its involuntary relationship with Cabala. I discovered long after I wrote the song that the number 801 means "Alpha and Omega" or "the first and the last" in Cabala and that this entity is a circular idea (beginning and end are identical) It also means 'dove' which I like ... The number 801 (which with all the rest of the chorus was taken unaltered from my dream) has another meaning that I find interesting. In Cabala the twenty-two Tarot cards are arranged so that they rest on the paths between the Tree of Life. Each of the paths has a number and each of the numbers corresponds to one of the cards in the Tarot Grand Arcana. Paths 801 describe a pyramid whose individual sides are the STRENGTH, FOOL and the MAGICIAN . "... Obviously the reputation in America is that 801 comes from Eight, Nought, One [Eight, Zero, One] whose initials mean .... I thought very ingenious , although it had never happened to me '' From Brian Eno's notes
I have loved this song for a long time. But it wasn't until about a year ago when listening to it after a particularly memorable late night for me that I decided it was THE GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME. BY ANYONE. EVER. And I still feel that way. It has so many great "parts" to it... so many ideas in one song and they work so well into a cohesive, concise masterpiece. And the guitar work and percussion from about 3:09 until the end is just incredible. I just wish it would keep going and am always a little disappointed when it fades and ends. That being said, it is still the greatest. There, that's my two cents. Nice video, by the way. Thank you.
evan, i heard(and loved) this when it first came out. and i agree that it is, in fact, the single greatest song that has ever been conceived. i have kept all 4 of "those" albums in constant rotation for 40 + years now. hasn't grown old yet!
When Rykodisc released Hardcore Devo Vol. 1 & 2 in the early 90’s, my boss at a flower shop in New Orleans saw how exited I was to finally own clean versions of those Devo gems, and figured right in introducing to Taking Tiger Mountain. The True Wheel has been my absolute favorite song ever since. Every single time I hear the two guitars building up to the final verse I get goosebumps ! Best song ever.
Trippy and great that some many respondents are in their teens. That proves the freshness of the music has not diminished. I'm 56 and still listen to Eno's '70s output on a regular basis.
i heard this song on our college radio station today... vague memories of something really inspiring from my childhood. youtubed it as soon as i could and i'm so stoked i found it. thanks for appreciating great music and doing something really cool with it
Phil Manzanera - guitar, production assistance Brian Turrington - bass guitar Freddie Smith - drums Robert Wyatt - percussion, backing vocals Randi and the Pyramids - chorus Eno - vocals, electronics, snake guitar, keyboards, production
You cannot convince me that that little bit at the end doesn't say "Sid Vicious from Bristol," even though this obviously came out before Sid Vicious was around.
19, been enjoying this song since yesterday although it feels like ive known this song since 1976 and three quarters... lovely song also great job on the video! it makes so much sense and i interpreted it on the first view!
I made this video from stuff I found on the net, some of my own still shots and one little short video clip I filmed in the middle.. Heavily influenced by the Eno/Mills book "More Dark Than Shark"
this lie life... jarring, fast, interwoven, in flux, happiness, sadness, angst, and mystery... very cool... video and a very cool song... Eno is th' man...
Thanks so much! This is one of the very first music videos I ever made. It is low quality, ruff and made with Windows Movie Maker (yuck!) But still one of my favorites.
One of the finest, trippiest amateur video interpretations I've ever seen. This Eno material stands the test of time - it's still heavy and mysterious, and you did a fine job of providing visuals that compliment the music. Bravo.
@MyLatestEscape I'm 51, and have been a lover of Eno since '77, after listening to Roxy Music's "For Your Pleasure. Thrilled that people still like this stuff!
@xt0olx I'm male, Northern Californian, age 56. Became an Eno fan after buying the first Roxy Music album when it was brand new. The Eno albums sound as fresh today as they did in the 1970s.
Thanks...I can remember when my friends and I sang ding ding at the same time. ENO. United us as a seperate reality. Alot of fun. All of these are great.
LOL. I love it. Great song...great video, lots of freaky pics. I love the repeating building during the guitar solo. Anyone hear of Phil Manzanera? I have an LP credited to 801 (apparently a name Manzanera used for his touring band). It's live. It's got Eno as a band member. They play some Eno, some other stuff...some covers. Tomorrow never knows.
Half forgotten music of my youth, regretfully sold my substantial record collection to pay for books in college, this among them. I came for the music but this goes to my faves for the vid. Truly outstanding work you've done here.
i love this song ,love your video....35 years ago when i was wearing out tthe grooves on the album i was the night manager of the hotel in the picture@3:41....thanks for the memories
I really, really like this. Incredible to think I first heard it around 30 years ago, and it is still a fave. Outstanding application of imaginative video to a great song. Thanks.
age 47. I confess to being unaware of Eno's "pop" works until seeing, in an early collection of Roxy Music video and other footage, film from when "Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch" was being recorded. That led to HCTWJ, and later TTM(BS), and 801. Marvelous stuff. ZBadSync, I can't tell you how many times I've gone to this for an Eno fix. Thanks.
@salgoudsamoht Salgoudsamoht! It's been so long! What luck to come across you on earth. We must meet up, I 've much to tell you about the desperate state of affairs on Tuurfulbok. Good news about the exploration of the Uubircirgis galaxy. I went back to Gaugonchon for my son's betrothal to Nepuuluu and enjoyed a good party and a bit of a hangover before back to work here. Studying, learning. Interesting. Looking forward to my holidays in November and a trip to Squat with Sheren. Happy days!
My favorite record in the mid 70's- did my art school homework to this all the time.....I was 53 in Sept. 2010.......I'm w/you, eff901!!! Nice vid Z- thanks for posting!!
If you collapse the guitar part after "here we go" to mono, you will hear the most awesomefuckedup phasing, and the great dissolve of the central shaft
@RoverenderAlligator Thanks for the tip!!! I will try these. I've listen to "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" and I've found that it's good stuff. No weaknesses in this album. Thanks again!!
One thing I can't help but noticing is the WA State Hwy sign of 801 (the black & white sign with a silhouette of Geo. Washington and the highway number in it). I've lived in WA State almost my whole life, but I've never seen or heard of Hwy 801 anywhere in the state. It might be an old road whose name was changed or something when I was too young to remember.
I am working on doing videos for the whole album, Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) Follow me on Twitter for updates.
haha a decade long project?
@@cameronschotter3545 maybe ....lol
Good stuff, keep it up
Really nice work!
🥦More, please.☸️
Happy birthday Brian We love You,You changed the sonic landscape.
One of the few remaining, living geniuses of the British music scene. God, I wish this man could live for ever!
He does. He's Neo
12 years and still one of the best videos on youtube.
Thanks Robert. This was one of the very first music videos I ever made.
Yeah, the video. Song is from 1974
I like the video a lot
This is my favorite-fan music video on youtube
+Justin Lane Nice piece of work, isn't it?
yeah, he must have really gotten inspired by those visuals to go and write such an amazing accompanying song! ;P kidding

I snuck in a quick glimpse of The Drake Hotel in the video...lol
I think Eno's track Energy Fools The Magician may be referring to this same 801 sequence of tarot cards... Strength, The Fool, The Magician
I'm 49 & have listened to Eno since I was 15.

It is fractal in its simplicity/complexity!

If anyone doubts '801 Live' is the greatest live recording ever...
Learn to play it and then you can keep it going. Only 3-4 chords! I jam to it on my ukulele all the time (tuned to guitar tunings).
Trippy and great that some many respondents are in their teens. That proves the freshness of the music has not diminished. I'm 56 and still listen to Eno's '70s output on a regular basis.

One of those painfully beautiful songs that I only can visit on occasion...
I know what you mean, hortense234.
Phil Manzanera - guitar, production assistance
Brian Turrington - bass guitar
Freddie Smith - drums
Robert Wyatt - percussion, backing vocals
Randi and the Pyramids - chorus
Eno - vocals, electronics, snake guitar, keyboards, production
Such a great lineup.......and Robert Wyatt on backing vocals :)
Good to hear Robert Wyatt especially after his accident.
Long time fan of his music, but his advocacy for Palestine shows a heart that is all too rare in this world.
Great visuals. Magnificently done.
Thanks!
This is great. I wore out my copy of the record when it was released playing this over and over and over....
We are the 801.
excellent vid... really works well with the song. And, Gott im Himmel, what a song.
Красивый клип!
А песня на все века!
Thank you for sharing this song with others
You cannot convince me that that little bit at the end doesn't say "Sid Vicious from Bristol," even though this obviously came out before Sid Vicious was around.
Hmmm?
This is by far my favorite Eno song, possibly album.
We are the 801
We are the central shaft
And we are here to let you take advantage
Of our lack of craft
Certain streets have certain corners
Sooner or later we'll turn your.
We are the 801
We are the central shaft
And thus throughout two years we've crossed the ocean
In our little craft
(row, row, row)
Now we're on the telephone
Making final arrangements (ding, ding)
We are the 801
We are the central shaft
...
Looking for a certain ratio
Someone must have left it underneath the carpet
Looking up and down the radio
Oh, oh, nothing there this time
Looking for a certain ratio
Someone said they saw it parking in a car lot
Looking up and down the radio
Oh, oh, nothing there this time
Going back down to the rodeo
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, here we go!
...
We are the table the captain's table let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
~
We are the losers we are the cruisers let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
~
We are the diners the final diners let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
~
Most of us are tinkers, some of us tailors
And we've got candlesticks and lots of cocktail sticks
~
We saw the lovers the modern lovers and they looked very good
They looked as if they could
~
We are the neighbors the nosy neighbors we think just like you would
We think just like you should.
Oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh...

yeah....pretty much what i see in my head when i listen to Eno
I made this video from stuff I found on the net, some of my own still shots and one little short video clip I filmed in the middle.. Heavily influenced by the Eno/Mills book "More Dark Than Shark"
As an Eno fan for the best part of forty years I say well done that man/woman. A truly excellent video to one of my all time favourite Eno songs.
What an amazing song, in many ways the rock star Eno is different from the Ambient one we all know :)
51, discovered in the very early 80's.
Oh and that an awesome vid for this song, just great!
Very nice collection of images - perhaps a bit heavy on the 801's
I see 801's everywhere I go!.........lol
this lie life... jarring, fast, interwoven, in flux, happiness, sadness, angst, and mystery... very cool... video and a very cool song... Eno is th' man...

I've watched your video about a thousand times over the years. I appreciate this :)
Thanks so much! This is one of the very first music videos I ever made. It is low quality, ruff and made with Windows Movie Maker (yuck!)

Nothing like chaos !
one of his best songs!
One of the finest, trippiest amateur video interpretations I've ever seen. This Eno material stands the test of time - it's still heavy and mysterious, and you did a fine job of providing visuals that compliment the music. Bravo.

This is the best representation of this song that anyone can hope for.
Brian would dig it , very nice. Would like it on a blotter tab !
Half forgotten music of my youth, regretfully sold my substantial record collection to pay for books in college, this among them. I came for the music but this goes to my faves for the vid. Truly outstanding work you've done here.

These images are as trippy as the music.
Spot on, you have the zeitgeist!
801 was group formed by Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, in the mid '70s. Great stuff, if you can find it.
Great song!!! Eno seperates the men from the boys
Thanks!!!! Too nice. a way to help me share Eno with my 25 year old!!! Lovely!
This is my fave Eno song ever, this and Baby's On Fire!
Remember seeing this fantastic video before,ZBadSynce...On my facebook timeline as we speak...as I write ...Hope people subscribe to you...Great work
Excellent job with the stills and animation blend on my favourite Eno track from that period.
Thanks.

This is one of the best videos on RUclips. Perfect accompaniment to the music. Thx.
Happy days!
I do love this song but since I don't have it right now. I do tend to watch your version many many times. Eno would approve . It's a fantastic visual.
C'est magnifique.
My favorite record in the mid 70's- did my art school homework to this all the time.....I was 53 in Sept. 2010.......I'm w/you, eff901!!! Nice vid Z- thanks for posting!!
50 M Eno fan since '70s
Nobody can touch Eno and his friends
suggest enhancing with 420, headphones and solitude : )
Sooooo Goooood.
If you collapse the guitar part after "here we go" to mono, you will hear the most awesomefuckedup phasing, and the great dissolve of the central shaft
Very nostalgic...I grew up on Brian Eno, and very thankful for that...Very cool video, thank you:)
I believe the Master Himself would enjoy this
I really enjoyed your video.
Great graphics!
Nice Synch!
Fave!
BRIAN ENO = ONE BRAIN
Good video & great clips.
infinite song and video, thankyou ZBadSync !
