Is your computer too slow to edit 4K video? Or do you have a fast computer that still lags when you are editing 4K, 6K, or even 8K footage? This video will show you how to create proxy files to MASSIVELY speed up your video editing speed, regardless of the specs of your computer.
This is my entire workflow for creating video proxies, including my exact preset settings for both Mac and PC. You can also download my proxy preset (linked above) to save you the time of creating your own.
Lastly, I cover how to create proxies even if you interpret your footage! If you've tried doing this before, you've probably noticed that the frame rates of your proxy files don't match up with your native video files. My workaround fixes this issue. :)

thanks a lot.... A LOT for this tutorial i feel so much prepared to taclke those hundreds of clips awaiting now... then again, i have a question, when i was making the preset i couldnt make it 119.xxx (dont remember those extra numbers) frames in the coding preset sttings window wich is the original footage so i did it as 59,94, it came quite close , but still changed the perspective a little bit in the end on premiere, sooo..... is there a way in wich i can choose the correct matching 119.xxx frames of the original in the preset settings box of media encoder? or will i have to interpret the footage after the setting in the queue window after the fact?

For everybody having issues with the watermark not showing, make sure to check the box "absolute sizing" in the watermark settings. The reason it's not showing is because the watermark image is too big and being scaled off the edge of your proxy render. The absolute sizing option will automatically scale it down to the right size to fit your proxy resolution.

    Thanks Matt!
This breakdown it thorough and even though it's long, it helped us decide on creating a custom 1920X1080 23.976 ProRes Proxy to work on all of our machines. Your enthusiasm for this subject made us stop and dork out and be excited while watching.
Our process/takeaway: (Fo shooting 4K interviews but for 1080 delivery )
We filmed for two docs with a Sony FS7 in West Africa with b roll and slo-mo in 1080 but 13 interviews in 4K. Some of the 4K interviews were over 30 minutes and customizing the proxy for edit makes life so simple. Our largest file, a 72 GB 4K file has a proxy size just under 10 GB.
The proxy workflow combined with making sub-clips in prelude has saved us at least 2 weeks of work by cutting down the internal review and caption workflow before showing the client.

First of all, this is definitely a time saver! That being said: Anyone figured out how to interpret footage in media coder automatically instead of: 1) wait for media encoder to load all files (lots of minutes), 2) stop the auto render, 3) cancel partially completed file, 4) delete partial file, 5) reset status of stopped file, 6) select all listed proxy jobs and interpret footage (lots of minutes) 7) when the simple menu (that should be static and not need to wait) is loaded select proper framerate then hit "OK" (lots of minutes again)????? I dont mind waiting, I just dont like waiting multiple times for something so silly. The time we wait could be programmed in the render process. If anyone has a solution, it would help a ton!!!

Idaho Falls Magazine editing on a 2018 MacBook at work, overheating is a massive issue with those machines. But that’s also die to the fact that premiere is slow as hell - so the combination does it.

Got a fan stand so if I plug it in before editing its all good for an hour or 2 but if I wait for it to start over heating then Imma need to let it rest for a bit or I ain't getting anything done smh. TBH its really just the MacBooks (for me) that have the severe lagging and overheating issues desktop Macs are fine (so far) for the most part but these proxies will be a huge help.

Ok, so i think i found an even more simple proxy settings (no more interpretation error, no more watermark missing)
Create your proxy with H264 CODEC and put size 1280x720, framerate "same as source" and with a very low bitrate (2mb/s MAX)
Add the watermark in the effect panel (same as him) and create the ingest file with this profile
i found this because i knew a lot of people had troubles with the interpretation of their footage and had watermark issues etc... and the most important point, a lot of people doesnt have the codec to read these quicktime clips so the proxies clips just doesnt work
thumbs up if it works for you
ps: sorry for my bad english

Just export the project as normally. Premiere will process the original files automagically.
When done with editing you can delete the proxy files if you are on short with disk space.
You do not need them. (you can always re-create them)

Had to watch this through again to see if I missed something. I can't seem to figure out what went wrong. Creating proxies and all was fine. But Matt, when you click on your toggle proxy view at 2:08, there isn't any change in what resolution your video shows. The only change you see visually is the watermark. And for that, I'm confused.
My original media is 1080p whereas my proxy is of course the 720p you suggested. And when I click on my toggle proxy view button, there is an obvious difference in resolutions and appearance. Sadly I didn't notice this until after I edited the entire video and exported only to see that because I was altering the zoom on the proxy video, it got hugely magnified in the original media.
Where did I go wrong? Why doesn't your view in the window change when you're clicking toggle proxies? I'm assuming you've got encoded files there in 720 but your originals are from 4k. You should definitely see a difference like I do. But why don't you?

And this is on an iMac with a 4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ram and a AMD Raedeon R9 with 4GB memory on the card. Tried several presets as well as creating new ones - no dice. My question is this, I record all my drone clips at 60fps and I always throw them on a 23.976 timeline and never interpret them because I want them to play in normal speed. I just like being able to have the ability to slow down my clip if I want to in post if some of my movements are jittery etc I can slow down the portion that wasn't jittery or jerky and have a good few second parallax etc.
However when I interpret footage to make proxies for my timeline to 23.976 and then go to my proxy and speed duration and boost it to 250% to bring it back to it's original frame rate it doesn't add up to the original clip at all what so ever. So it's basically impossible for me to edit with proxies because I can't speed up my proxy or slow down my proxy and keep it on par with the original file. How do I go about fixing this?

    • @AlbertoPiedrolaAPSfilms

Priceless Productions I had the same issue. What I did was leaving the settings as “original frame rate” when I’m are creating the new preset at Encoder, rather than setting it at 23,973 as he did. That way all proxies match frame rate with the original file. It worked perfectly for me. Hope this works for you too :)

This has been so far a common practice, to firstly transcode a MagicYUV lossless or Utvideo or any other beefy format into Prores and then edit. What is explained in this video, the workflow is more time-saving, as you don't need to go twice over the encoding process in order to make a video editable in Premiere. GoPro Cineform is still better traversable format than Prores (depends on your machine and storage. If you use Nvme storage, you won't have any issue editing directly from H.264 even).

I just watched this for like 7th time. I love adobe premiere but my god it is finicky. So many hoops to jump through to get those interpreted frame rate clips into proxy’s. And you’re only working with two clips! I just filmed a wedding in 90% 4K because I planned on editing proxy’s. Now it seems almost not worth it. I swear I spend more time troubleshooting in premier than actually editing lol. I do appreciate these videos though Matt!

I mean it'll for sure work. Fortunately I have a pretty beastly computer and I'm editing everything on a 1080 timeline so I didn't take the time to go for the proxys just yet. Once i have a smaller project or some time to mess around I will give it a go but with a 300 gb project, I'm just not ready for Premiers inevitable issues to come up mid way through the process.

Unless your rig is pushing the latest in CPU and GPU (and have 4 of them or something crazy) I dont see many 4K edits being as smooth as proxy edits. Hi Matt,
Thanks for the great tutorial on Proxies. Just one note that I find to work better: Instead of interpreting your footage, rather use the “Speed/Duration” option to batch process your raw files and make them all play slower. That effectively gets around the issue of asynchronous proxy files and original files! No explicit interpretation of the proxy file frame rate required.

    • @Its_Jeff
      @Its_Jeff 2 года назад

That would work too! One problem is that some effects you can't apply to clip that are slowed down. So it's always better to interpreting your footage :)

When you're in media encoder, right click the preset (not the ingest one) and click preset settings, and then the effects tab. The logo is linked to a file on Matt's computer, this needs to be changed to where the image is saved on your PC. Click the down arrow next to 'applied' then click 'choose' and find the image on your PC.
