I always used proxy media with the default presets and had to clear my whole hard drive before generating them. It still filled up all the way sometimes and failed generating everything, then i had to start all over again and render 2-3 parts of the video, then put them together. I ordered a 4tb external ssd for 300€ and used it as proxy storage but then it took 11 hours for my whole project to be generated and it still lagged while editing ( Probably my connection cable was just shit). This morning i was about to go crazy, watched 5 different tutorials wich didnt help at all, then i found yours and my whole proxy media for the project that took 11 hours before was done in 80 minutes. Instead of 1.04 TB it only takes 21 GB now! I can still return the 300€ SSD and live my life happyly thanks to you. You changed my whole workflow mate! You are great. Greetings
Nice! Which Proxy settings did you decide to use? Mine are still eating up way too much storage and generating them takes 2 hours for roughly 40 minutes of footage
@@AncientSteel used the exact setting Show in the Video. Files are very small, still takes long tho. But He does Show How to generate proxys while editing aswell
@@Schnaxel Good to know, I'll try to have more patience next time. I do believe it could be because of the codec though. While the external proxy program uses 264, I manually chose SQ (or HQ, not sure)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! 🙌 This has completely changed my editing game and saved me so much time. Now I can edit super fast without any lag or delay. Your explanation was clear and easy to follow. Keep up the great work!
I learned how to make proxies in Premiere Pro on one of your tutorials and now I'm learning how to do it in DaVinci Resolve on this tutorial. I just now watched three tutorials before this one and they didn't really explain this process as well as you do. Both your tutorials helped me to understand how these processes work, not just "click this and voila". You actually explain what the program is doing after you change a setting. Lastly I just realized I never subscribed to your channel. I am subscribed now. Thank you.
Definitely helpful when it comes to Proxys in Davinci, Thumbs Up..... however, I hoped to see how I link Proxys I made with the A7s in realtime. I will see...
This is exactly what I needed for a quick turnaround memorial service video I was asked to make for some family members who were unable to attend. Thanks Matt!
You sir have just saved my sanity, i actually want my proxy files on a separate drive to my media files, and you showed me how, DaVinci does this really neatly to be honest, the proxy files are put in a folder under the project name so easy to find share or delete, thank you. subscribed :)
Thanks, Matt! I still sometimes have slow playback after adding Fusion Effects or even noise reduction but I've left the Proxy Generation settings to automatic. Hopefully Quarter and H.264 settings will alleviate that. I also sometimes use render cache and/or render in place for super complex clips.
Great video, just that Blackmagic still hasn't address the issue of proxies not remaining synced to subclips when they are created. I use subclips a lot for documentary workflow, and would love to use proxies, but unfortunately, it's limited.
great video as always! Thanks! Where does the Blackmagic Proxy Generator save the generated proxys when finished? So that i can delete them after editing to save space?
I found it out by myself, for those who are wondering: it's saved as PROXY folder in the choosen folder, where are all the videoclips stay. Davinci recognize the folder as proxyfolder by itself, after following Matt's Instructions
great tutorial, thanks . I'm trayitn to find something regarding using compund clips on timelines and. "open them " decompose in place the n edit and re compose but with same name so its usableabgain but timelines cleaner, either that or convert a compound to timeline fast and do the same
thanks for a great, simple, and thorough description of the how and why re proxy files. Just curious if this method preserves the 6K resolution in editing.....does this process allow zooming etc within the edit to be preserved when the 6K files are swapped back in?
Thank you Matt. Crisp and good content. :) I have a question though - round the 9:30 minutes in the video you mention about "watch folder", what does that mean? Are you suggesting that we should create a folder and drop all HQ files (that we want to generate proxies for) into. If so, would that not mean that we will have the same HQ file stored twice, one in DaVinci Resolve and another one in this 'watch folder'? Looking forward to get clarity on this point.
Hi Matt! Thanks for this! I'm really enjoying your tutorials! I recently bought a Z6iii and noticed that when I'm shooting N-RAW that the camera generates a 1080p proxy file. I have been unable to find anything on the web that tells me how to handle this proxy file when importing footage and color grading in Davinci Resolve (e.g. should I be using this proxy file or generating one in Resolve and, if the former, how do I link the camera file etc.) Any chance you could do a short tutorial on this at some point? Or, maybe you touched on this somewhere and I missed it. Thanks!
Super helpful, thanks! I am still trying to figure out the best format for the proxies though, since i'm reading that H264 compression creates more work for the system, as apposed to Pros Res LT or Proxy. thoughts?
Love what you said mostly, but from my research h264 is actually the worst format for proxies. The other formats are meant to be read more quickly by davinci resolve.
Matt, I don't know how you don't have 1 million subscribers by now. You are one of the few English-language channels that I subscribe to because you put manual subtitles on your videos that I translate into Portuguese. The only request I make is that you add subtitles to older videos, starting with the video "Behind The Scenes Of A Real Wedding In Colorado!", from January 20, 2018, and previous videos that do not have English subtitles
Tonight I tried to create proxy files for a project on 3 files it is very slow going. So I cancelled progress and will try to render in place to see if that works faster. I'm really bummed out. I HD hoped creating proxy files would solve my problem. But not so much.
Yes its only a drop down from the top of the screen, just select prefer original, when you render it automatically uses the HQ files, no need to do anything
Great vid. But one wish wish wish. I was hoping you would show those of us with a Sony camera how to use the proxies our camera generates while we shoot. So all we need to do is incorporate them. How come no one covers this.

There’s a shortcut button in the upper right to toggle proxies on and off instead of having to go into the menu. Not a crazy time saver or anything, but hey, it’s there.
when I'm exporting, it doesn't switch back to the original proxies and its all pixelated..I'm not sure what I did wrong as I followed everything to a T! sos!
Hi Matt Johnson, My name is Baiju I am from India, and I would like to ask you about the new firmware update from Sony. After updating to new firmware 3.0, Atomos Ninja V is continuously not capturing prores raw HQ for more than 30 seconds from Sony ( via HDMI) . But prores raw compression is working properly. I am totally disappointed with this issue. As a Sony shooter, I just wanted to check with you? Another thing is that I could not find the AWB lock option in the drop-down menu ... When you get time please check your camera and let me know brother... This is not an issue of ATomos Ninja.
