I adore that scene of Renly and Stannis meeting. Book Renly is described as tall and strong and handsome and jovial- a rizz king. Just like in this scene, he talks absolute sht to his rigid, humorless brother. Here's a snippet:
"Renly’s hand slid inside his cloak. Stannis saw, and reached at once for the hilt of his sword, but before he could draw steel his brother produced ... a peach. 'Would you like one, brother?' Renly asked, smiling. 'From Highgarden. You’ve never tasted anything so sweet, I promise you.' He took a bite. Juice ran from the corner of his mouth.

In the book Sansa is actually beaten brutally for several minutes before being rescued by Tyrion
Sawing off limbs was the practice when a limb couldn't be saved. Even in wars like WW1. Sometimes it just has to come off by any means.
And WW2, and the Korean War, and every other conflict. Happening today in Ukraine, Gaza/West Bank, Sudan, DNRC - everywhere there's a conflict.
During the battles on the old ships of the line it was the only way to save someone after being hit by a cannon ball or splinters of wood.
@@TheKittsPajamas oh, because swords and axes crush the bone and cause it to splinter/fracture, which makes infection more likely and healing slower. Saws slice through the bone allowing for an easier healing process.
Just FYI The Mountain was played by 3 different actors for various reasons.

The first two cutting off scenes we see in the show are done by white-walker blades and valyrian steel, and these materials are literally magically sharp. Most swords would require you to hack at a limb a few times at least before it came off, and that process damages and splinters the tissue and bone left behind. A saw, while grisly, gives a clean would that's much easier to close and care for.
