I would not treat the knotweed in spring or early summer. The herbicide will not effectively get down into the rhizome. Fall is really the best. I recommend that people dig it up at this time of year and be really careful with the dug up rhizomes. Put them in a plastic bag and "cook" them in the bag out in the sun for a couple months. Then they can be dumped out. Then treat the knotweed in the fall. The cut stem method is the most accurate. A foliar application - either by wiping or spraying with foam herbicide - is the most effective. Choose based on whether there are desirable plants nearby.
I would treat them shortly after flowering but before they go dormant (which is pretty early in the summer or fall). You could try two methods: on some, clip off the top of the plant and treat the remaining leaves and stem and with the other just treat the leaves and let the foam herbicide flow on the leaf into the stem.
@@MrJl677 how big an area are you treating? The dispenser bottle will treat a surprising number of plants. If you use the cut stem method, you use 20% active ingredient in the mix (which is basically half herbicide concentrate, half water and a little Blue Foaming Agent). Then apply a small amount of foam to the cut foliage/stem. A full bottle (140 ml) could treat an area 15 x 15 feet easily.
@@GreenShoots I am treating a slope area thats around 800sqft. There are Lily of valley all over the slope along with desirable ground cover (mostly vinca minor) and succulent plants.
@@MrJl677 In that case i would mix up one bottle (140 ml). If you do the cut stem treatment, mix 20% active. If you do foliar treatment to the leaves, make a 4% active ingredient mixture and cover about 20% of foliage. With cut stem you just cover the cut portions - maybe 3-5% of remaining plant.

I can’t wait to try this in my turf!
It's mid may, should I treat the small knotweed on the leaves or cut low and on the stem?
