    We are at the "big kid" wood lot for this interesting saw-off. The 038 is in excellent condition physically and pristine internally.
    I initially built the 038 pretty radical with the psycho zipkit in the hopes that it "wood" hold it's own against an insane-o 044/440.
    Considering that the air flow characteristics are far superior in the 064 and later models. And, the fact that it pulls harder than a stock 461 that comes in with at least a 1 more hp rating. I have no way of being exact on the timed runs since the cuts are not are not all the way off, given. However, in this video we see the 038 running about the same while dealing with more of the large knot - which says it all.
    This 038 could possibly be ready for a new home.
    I am currently available for custom saw modifications and port work. If you are interested, please shoot me an email.

    Bout to buy a MS461. Look at a lot of your content. Thank you. Just wanted to say I feel for you. I don't do social media, but some of your commenters leave some really ignorant, rude comments. Keep up the great work.

    I have two 038 mags. One set up west coast style with a 28” lightweight bar the other is stock configuration with 20” bar full comp chain and 8 tooth rim sprocket. I’ve done what I can as far as “bolt on” type improvements go and they run very well. What I mean by that is I’m running triple port mufflers on both (came with dual port) and the screen type air filters in a attempt to get as much airflow as possible. No porting yet, next modification will be increasing ignition timing. I feel like Stihl went a little conservative on these saws.

    Man... my dad has an 038 magnum from the early to mid 80's. I'd love to get that thing a little hotter than stock. It's been a second saw for most of its life, and never abused. It runs and looks great.

      nick hunt I’ve got one of them psycho-ized 362s , it’s the one from the 362ss insane-o vs 362 standard insane-o video, compared to a stock 461 the 362 out runs it no problem I run a 28” on it but tried a 32” and it pulls it better than the 461, the torque is really impressive for that little saw.

      They're readily available all over the place at many price points, some very sensible... Bought a new one for mine in 2016 and the same ones are still sold now. They tend to be 72cc magnum spec which only requires minimal filing of the mounting bolt holes.

    The 038 mag is a good saw I cut some fire wood with one long ago but I thought it was a good fire wood saw I like the 044 a lot better if a guy put a greenwinie on it it would make it really get with it any way Good saw God bless !

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 6 лет назад +2

      Bill A a good machinist (cough , cough) could make a custom aluminum velocity stack for that model ... affix a green-weenie or k+n air filter ; re - dial carb and it’s off the races ... it seems the “flock-style” air filters aren’t what they are cracked up to be ... frankly I’m surprised the 038 magnum stayed with the stock 461 given the “air-flow” limitations of the 038 stock set-up !!! ... I’m sure ol’ Jack can whip her into shape on that side of the equation if he so desires ...

      Question would it be helpful to drill small holes in that cover to get better airflow

    • @billa7571
      @billa7571 6 лет назад

      Ummm I don't know for sure but I don't think it would hurt as long as you spray the carb area out every once in a while I wouldn't put a whole lot of holes in it but I would definitely help a little and keep the air cleaner clean because once you drill holes and it's really going to suck than sawdust into the air cleaner!!!!!!!

    • @billa7571
      @billa7571 6 лет назад

      pentecost66
      Hey bro it wouldn't get much more air by drilling holes in the cover of the filter only can get so much air through it !That's why a after market filter is the only way to get the big air flow that would make any big difrents ! You can't get a velocity stack and a green weenie filter and put on your saw that would make it really a lot better I would put it on my saw I have one on both my 066 and 044 and my husky 2100 I love that type of filter but if it's raining they get wet ezer but still work

    enjoy your videos. I love the 038s and 056 chainsaws. The 038 you are using here started off with 3.7 hp the super was at 4,1 and the magnum and magnum 2 were at 4,8 hp. Not sure how much you gain with your mods. Mine are all stock 038 magnums.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 лет назад +1

      Rich hi. This is a really late magnum with the 52 mm bore. If it started life at 4.8 hp and now runs with, or in this case outruns, a 461 that comes in at 6.0 hp I guess it would be ~ 1.2 for this saw based on the numbers.
      Thanks for watching.

    Maybe try some frogskinz to let more air in through the filter cover. Are those pro safety 4 points?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  5 лет назад +1

      Kyle hi. I have considered it. The problem is when working in a brush hole, eventually anything exposed is going to get damaged. I had to replace a lot of am air filters on saws because they take a hit and perforate. Carrying a spare was pretty much mandatory in a yarder block. I guess if the application is not to extreme they might stand the time test.
      No.
      Thanks for watching.

  • @fabzacres-blackcat
    @fabzacres-blackcat 6 лет назад +2

    To the best of my knowledge the 038 magnum was 4.8hp ... the 461 is listed at 6.0 so if the 038 hangs with the 461 that’s sayin something ... it “wood” be interesting to see the 038 magnum sporting a max-flo or green weenie system or perhaps a wholesale intake change ... i.e. custom filter ; intake and perhaps a carb swap (never a huge BING fan myself )me thinks those little things “wood” make Big differences on that 038 mag ...

    • @danielh4995
      @danielh4995 6 лет назад

      There is some room to open up the intake on the 038 if a different boot and carb is used but for most of the port work stock size can flow enough fuel/ air to get it tuned.

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 6 лет назад +1

      Daniel Hunter I’m not sure that the stock filter will flow enough air with Jacks’ Psycho-ization process to realize the full gains ... especially the “flock” style filter ... it could be the design and the bore/stroke is a limiting factor on the 038 magnum ... I think Jack does mention the 038 magnums’ filter is not quite up to snuff in the video ! Happy chainsawing

    • @fabzacres-blackcat
      @fabzacres-blackcat 6 лет назад +1

      Daniel Hunter iirc there is a “winter” filter for the 038 magnum that looks superior flow-wise to the stock - wood be interesting to see for r/d purposes how much more she’d wind out although I woodnt recommend it for work !

    No one seemed to mention that when you ran the 038 super it was with the chain already ran
    Bet with a new chain and no knot that 038 would take the other saws lunch money.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  Год назад

      I run the smaller displacement saws 1st for the most part. I will run the stock saw/s 1st most often as well.
      This is so the test will be more fair.
      Also, there's ABSOLUTELY no way to run a fair comparison when using two different chains. Because there is no way to get two different chain's teeth exactly to the same sharpness and also have the stops/raker/riders/depth gauges at the same elevations. Really, really close yes.
      So, I did run a fair comparison between these two contestants.
      Thanks for watching.
