I bought shotstop level 4 plates in 2021, I already contacted the vendor I bought them from as well as the customer email for shotstop(doubt it even works anymore). This is messed up, man. I bought these plates because John said some great things about them in his video (and I still agree they are some of the best feeling plates I have worn, but if they are not to be trusted it really pisses me off because I know I wont be getting my money back most likely)
2 things. 1.) this is not his fault. I don’t know the manner of his agreement with SSB, however, if I had to guess, I would guess they were dropshipped. I don’t think it is on him to do anything about it except making a video saying, “yeah, this is bad”. He had no part in the manufacturing process, and as long as he went out and tested the armor, he has done his part and should not be considered in any way responsible for your financial decision. 2.) I have confirmed a few plates that are headed my way for eval.
Curtis, are you willing to share information in regards to the NIJ testing and failure that started the investigation? ShotStop Only has 3 unique NIJ CPL listed models. One of them is suspiciously a Tencate # appended with SSB. Many of us have wondered how that became NIJ CPL rated. The other 2 are PE plates. All 3 of which are still currently CPL listed. Raw materials can be sourced almost anywhere to build product (for example Hesco ceramic cores are generally from Italy), but as you allude to if you aren't quality controlling those materials, and then lot testing them, that's not good. Most LE that have been contacting me had purchased a lot of their ceramic plates after onsite demos from SStop showing amazing performance above and beyond most of some models capabilities ie in one instance the GT2 stopping M2AP. SStop lost out on an LE bid because that LE agency had a clause about seeing manufacturing and random inspection. I feel LE agencies should all do that, and add additional clauses to inspect pre and post bid product, as well as 3rd party threat validation removed from the bidder's controls.
Ammunition is the least of our worries. There are many excellent foreign ammunition manufacturers supplying the US market, most of which are NATO allies, and some of which do an even better job of providing us with ammo that meets or exceeds actual NATO specifications than Lake City commercial spec runs, rejected lots, or if we're really lucky contract overrun of product that actually meets minimum mil-spec accuracy, velocity, and quality control requirements.
Ethnocentrism nationalism seems to have been proven wrong as all American origin gun companies have been run to the ground and sold off. Remington, springfield, colt. Browning and winchester are just barely holding on and winchester basically only does ammo now
