I just went back and watched Terminator Rise of the Machines. In the last decade… it has went from becoming pure fantasy… to pure reality. The only thing left is when the drones/machines are easily integrated with Artificial Intelligence so they can hunt without the aid of Humans. Then we will have truly arrived.
@@BigSawCat I know they have made a material (in the form of tiles) that can heat up or cool down at will. So they coated a vehicle with these tiles and on each side they had thermal cameras pointing outward. So what the camera saw on the left… it would project on the right. So an observer looking at the vehicle would see the side of a vehicle with a heat “pattern” that matched exactly what was on the opposite side. So for say, the TOW sight… you couldn’t see the vehicle. It just looked like the landscape behind it. Like the predator. I’m sure we have the tech to do this with the human eye for regular visible light as well.
@@BigSawCat this same tile technology could also be used in very “tricky” ways. So they took an Infantry Fighting Vehicle… and they had both sides of the vehicle “heat” and “cool”… so the signature of the armored vehicle looked exactly like a Volkswagen Beetle. In Ukraine I saw Mylar “Space Blankets” being used to mask a small Honda generator in a shallow hole. They were using the generator for charging drone battery packs/bunker lighting. A wise man will assume the enemy has thermal capabilities… and when they see that “hot” generator… fixed tube rounds are surely going to rain down. They crafted a flimsy “frame” of branches and then taped the Mylar (shiny side down) onto the frame. Then placed the whole affair over the hole and threw debris/leaves on it.

@@stihl888 Indeed, you can get either or version if you have the right means but ConCamo is definitely picky about their distribution (understandable).
In some situations… like integrated into the overhead cover/concealment of a fighting position… just the common Mylar “space blanket” does a great job of masking a heat signature. You just need the material to not be in contact with the warm body.
That's the same for any material. A basic ten dollar nylon tarp will "mask" heat if it's not touching your body. So will bushes. Understanding thermal requires an IQ higher than the vast majority of people have. There's loads of active duty military guys who are totally unable to learn how it works, so these myths about it never go away.
Agreed, I've spoken to one of the guys several times that's behind designing a lot of this gear. He's very passionate about this and only cares about saving our guys lives and giving our guys the advantage on the modern battle field. If you look at their website it says no foreign sales.
Thanks for the video, Brent. I learn a lot from you. Got a whole set of Rhodesian brushstroke after your testing videos, learned quite a bit about field discipline, and now I'm gonna have to buy some of this BCS equipment. Lol
This is just a thought… it will certainly not be practical in all situations… but if you’re near a water source… I’m thinking that if you took that material (or any material) and got it wet… it will drastically change its thermal signature. Not sure if this is a good idea or a bad idea. You certainly don’t want a drone/thermal camera to see a “square” of obviously colder material… but in some instances it might help mitigate heat given off, by say an engine, if the material is evaporating (has a lower temp). Like how in Iraq you could put a water bottle in a sock and tie 550 cord on it and buzz saw it in the air to get a colder water temp. Evaporation sucks out heat.
Think in the movie “Predator” how Arnold (GET TO THE CHOPPAH!!!) tricked the Predator by coating himself in mud to mask the heat his body was giving off… thus blinding the enemy.
Constantly amazed watching things in Ukraine people idly wander about in the open or walk down roads in full view when there are trees and plenty of shadows nearby. NEVER WALK ON ROADS OR TRACKS.

I ended up getting some of that surplus 5’x8’ camo netting off of sportsman guide just to get over that bar for free shipping and it was only $9. If it ends up being any good at thermal reduction I can’t bring myself to pay up for this. It is pretty cool but I can chop up the surplus stuff into a light ghillie and not feel like I just dropped a set of tires into a lake.
@ Well darn, I need to check this email more often. Apologies for just seeing this but you’re absolutely right, there’s no way in the world that it would reduce a thermal signature.
