You are absolutely right about the risks, but for me it’s all part of the fun: the thrill of the chase. You’re gambling on all the things you warn about that you will get lucky and find that perfect unplayed minty gem. Some you win, some you lose 🤓

You are right on, I hate older sealed records and stay away from them for the same reasons.

Kenny, I completely agree with all you say about the Still Sealed Shrinkwrap Dilemma! Greetings from London BTW from your new audiophile buddy across 'the pond!'.

In relation to Jazz & reggae I’m lucky, I inherited my late Dads entire collection, all in mint condition, labels like Blue Note, Impulse, Verve etc.
My father was. Jamaican so I also inherited a lot of classic Jamaican 45s as he built his own sound system when arriving in the U.K. in 1961, my Father has a relative who we recently found & he lives in Baltimore, Maryland, he used to own a racing car of which he still goes to the various meetings around the U.S.A.

Great video. Absolutely agree with you. I never sell sealed records either, I open them to check their condition and notify the buyer that the record was opened by me to check it. Never had any complaints .......enjoy the music always......

I 100% agree with you on buying older sealed albums!!! I have opened a lot of sealed records it seems like one out of four of them is going to be warped.

I agree! The other comments say it all. I’ve gotten plenty of warped sealed records.

I agree 1000 percent with your reasoning and logic. I bought an older John Coltrane and I thought it was an original based on the cover buy it was a third pressing that was sealed. I paid 75 bucks and I was upset, but I took a chance and it was sealed. I have bought 4 other low dollar amount records that were sealed and they were warped.
I bought one other sealed record that was as you said warped, but it made a whooshing sound, which I’m sure was heat related because the grooves were toast for the first minute. So I’m not impressed with sealed copies at all, especially high value records.
I want to see, feel and listen, which is why my favorite stores are the ones that have a turntable and cd listening station and because I’m a regular, if I have any problems I can bring them back and I’m allowed to take high value records home for a listen, but it took a while to build that relationship up.

I’m 53 years old now & from the U.K. When I was a teenager my next door neighbour was 6 years older than me, we used to visit a warehouse owned by a Canadian guy, the place was called Yanks. This place was full of American import albums all sealed, my neighbour was into funk, soul & jazz, nearly every album was around £1.00 to purchase & we couldn’t believe it, we would be in that warehouse all day & our hands would be dirty from looking through rack after rack of albums. We always came away with at least a 100 albums on each visit, I guess that was the time everyone stopped buying vinyl and changed to CDs.
The irony today is it’s hard to find original presses for pennies nowadays as the internet immediately lets sellers know the value of vinyl so they charge accordingly, at the same time over the last few weeks the Mo-Fi situation came to light which doesn’t bother me as I would never pay those prices for records, the only winners today are internet sites like Discogs.

Was at my local thrift store yesterday and saw two sealed classical records. I cracked them open to find mashed up paper inner sleeves that left marks all over the record. Did not even want them for a $1.00. Buyer beware when it comes to sealed records. These records were never meant to be sealed for this amount of time. Good score on the Blondie!

Great video Kenny. I’m new to vinyl but a serious jazz lover. That Sarah Vaughn album is on my list. It’s a gem and I bet it sounds great! You make a great point about buying old sealed copies. I’ve bought only one old sealed copy. It’s a Dizzy Gillespie late 70s album. Other than it being faded it sounds fine with no warp. But I agree in that I wouldn’t spend a lot on the unknown! Thanks Kenny and cheers from Toronto!

I dont mind spending a little money on a sealed lp.. kinda depends.
I bought a sealed Cannonball Adderley LP.. 1966 Why Am I treated So Bad.. paid about 20 bucks maybe less (Discogs). It ended ip being literally perfect.. even smelled new. But I was willing to risk the money because of the price. It’s actually the only sealed vintage LP I’ve ever bought.

I would not mind buying a sealed, older album but the price as to be excellent for me to take the risk.

What you really have to worry about these days is the practice of unscrupulous record sellers resealing old records. It's become a big problem. Collectors nowadays are buying old sealed records to open and play their records. In some cases when they open their sealed record they find an album that is VG, with obvious play wear. It happens all the time. This is more prevalent than some people think.

Hi Kenny, I just subbed, and I enjoy your thoughts on collecting when I buy a sealed record, I usually have a player copy or other versions of that record to play so I keep them sealed. On the times I buy something old that is new to me they have all played nice I have been fortunate in that respect. But if I buy a pricy ($50 on up) sealed copy with tight shrink and let's say a clean hype sticker to me it's worth it to keep it sealed. The Blondie album makes me nervous, for a buck I would buy it and I know little on Mo-Fi, but the shrink is loose so that record would make me curious to see its condition.
