    I respect your drive to turn these stumbling blocks into motivational videos for other painters. It’s reassuring to see someone like you with a significantly higher skill level than myself hit a snag, as well as how you recover.

      I’m happy to hear that it comes across well. I always want to make sure I’m as transparent as possible in my videos, we are all human, and we all have to deal with issues like making mistakes. If anything I say helps even one person have a better time painting, then I will continue to do my best and make more videos.

      This was a fun video to make, despite the model lol. I’ve had the camera for a good while now, just not a lot of opportunities to use it. It’s 120p from a GoPro hero 7, and yeah, I was being extra slow about it lol.

    It's always really good for me as a beginner to see experienced and accomplished painters share their struggle when they happen.
    It's good to be reminded that this stuff is difficult and no one is safe from a bad painting day, but it's also very educational to have you walk through how you solve these adversities.
    Thank you for sharing, from someone who is a total of five finished models into her hobby. :)

      Putting contrast paint over enamels does make a really cool blood stained effect, the oils makes the contrast really slick and separate a little. • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 года назад +1

      For the most part I just try not to buy the same or similar models too often, that way there is a good variety on the channel. Who to buy from depends on feedback from eBay. I try and only buy from people with 100%, and if they have less, I usually check to see why. If the negative feedback is just people complaining about something that has nothing to do with the person or company, then I’ll still buy from them. So far in more than 20 years on eBay I’ve really only had maybe 2 bad transactions. Hope that answers your question!

    If you're someone who really likes to paint minis, this is a situation everyone is likely to come across.
    Myself, I have a unit of zombies I bought about 3-4 years ago that I have painted twice and still haven't finished. First time around, I had a colour scheme chosen but didn't like how the skin was turning out. I put it aside, forgot about it, and tried it again when Contrast paints came out. This time, I liked the direction the skin was going but then disliked how the tattered clothes I did now looked flat and boring. They now sit as my own testament of not trying to force a project to completion... and another lesson in not trying to do 20 models in one session without doing a test model first.

    I empathize with you on this one; this was my painting journey on what was going to be my Everchosen competition entry. I chose something outside my comfort zone (Nurgle Lord of Blights), designed a cool looking base that still fit within parameters (diseased swamp) and had a great idea (to go for a yellow, jaundiced skin tone) and everything went wrong from there. The water effect on my base cracked (which I'd never had happen before) and it took me months to realize what had happened; I used *really* porous cork with big voids in it as the landmass and it actually absorbed the water effect as it was curing, creating these deep cracks, which only go worse when I tried to fill them because the cork kept absorbing the acrylic (I still have that failed base by the way, and only realized about a month or so afterward what had happened because I accidentally hit the cork with a metal sculpting tool and the impact was much more substantial than it should have been as if I'd hit a solid resin piece). That pretty much ended that project, but before that I struggled with getting the color right on the skin and never did succeed. After a couple of months, I stripped it and its now primed with a new base (different cork this time and sealed extra well just to be sure) and waiting for me to try again.
    There most definitely comes a time when you're painting where you hit that point; the point where you should stop messing with it and just call it done. Its so easy to miss the signs though, and most hobbyists I know have at least 3 or 4 stories of similar projects where they finally had to put it aside, then strip it later and start with a fresh palette. Although, for a second there, I did think you were going to go full on "Dead by Daylight" on that model and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have found it at least a little satisfying, on behalf of everyone who's had that struggle.

    Not that I'm any sort of great painter or artist, but I think you ran into a "mixed style" problem with this mini. You seemed to be going for an ultra gritty "grimdark" shroud and gibbet on the mini, but mixing that with a very bright and almost neon ethereal mist and enchanted axe. I've yet to see anyone who can mix those two styles on the same mini and really pull it off. The two big "mistakes" in my view are attempting the chipping effect over the neon axe blade, and the blood spatter on the spirits. That's where you seemed to be trying to unify the gritty and the fantastic and it just didn't come together. Of the two, I think the axe blade was more successful, and probably could have pulled together to create an interesting look. I might have tried to tone down the pink and work more off of the quincridone red, taking a little of the neon effect off.
    The blood spatter, I find really difficult to pull off effectively. Just a random spritzing of blood always seems to just miss the mark. Where I've seen it done most effectively, it almost has it's own story to it the same way a good highlight, NMM, or OSL effect has. What I mean by that is there's a varying density to the spatter on the mini, such that you can see where the spatter came from, where the primary impact points were, and where the blood has pooled.
    I dunno, these are just my random thoughts and reactions watching the video.

      @herculeholmes504 3 года назад

      I haven't painted for many years (getting ready to do a little painting over Christmas with a new paint set), but I was thinking about how I would paint that miniature differently:
      Does blood spattering on spirits make sense? I wouldn't paint blood spatter on anything ethereal, unless maybe the blood drops were completely fresh (maybe glossy 3D droplets) to suggest the blood had sprayed at just that moment; the skulls I might paint as physical skulls surrounded by ethereal vapors, but I'm not sure how well I could paint the transition. Blood on the axe I might paint as spattering upward rather than dripping down or pooling for a (hopefully_ dynamic effect.
      Something I can't make up my mind about on this figure is the noose: The rope, if it is obeying gravity, should hang straight down.. but then again (a) he's a ghost, and (b) if he's moving forward very fast then the rope would swing toward him.

    So may be the question might have been, how does an ethereal get rust? It is only marginally in this realm, ya know?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 года назад

      For sure, it’s one of the things that wasn’t super solid in my head, so when actually getting to it I was breaking the rules laid out by the ‘question.’ If one part is in this realm, it can have a more a more textured, rusted, or bloody look. What I ended up doing was putting that onto the parts that were not in this realm, so I broke the question, or just didn’t consider it. So blood on the ghosts, no good, blood on the leather, totally fine. Setting up rules to follow can make for a nice consistent army, knowing what colors or effects go where and when are all part of it. Asking yourself these questions before you jump in to painting will often lead to better results. In this case, I thought about it, but didn’t really follow it.

    The model did not look good in the end because you did not think about the combination of textures you are going for in your paint job. These are not mistakes - this is a lack of planning. The end result itself is really well made if you look at the separate parts - grimdark cloak, rusty axe, etherial parts with smooth transitions - however when this all comes together as a whole - this just does not looks right and the blood all over the place just highlights it. The clean look of the airbrushed transitions does not combine with an oil wash without additional weathering effects and vice versa. Also do not repaint this model again - keeping the models as-is is a good reminder for future projects.

      Certainly we are all at different levels in our painting journey, there are lots of painters out there whose absolute worst day is still miles above my best day, and that’s to be expected. In this case I was just frustrated with how things were going and not getting the result I was looking for. Even more so, a result that I know I’m capable of.
