I just found your channel yesterday and I have already heard some top-notch painting advice! I am particularly guilty of over-thinning my paint, it really can make things harder than it needs to be, and your advice on colour picking was very helpful!
Great video, looking forward to the blend video. That looks to be how I stumbled into doing blends, and I've never seen another person do it and have a named technique for what it's called
I was expecting that video so much ! Thanks for all the tips But one question, and I beg you please : would it be possible to share the references of the purple paint at 3:40 please ! I want to have purple armors and I could not find any way to achieve, if I have this step it will be a great help Grazie mile !!!!
This is really helpful, thank you. I've been trying to get my head around layering and glazing but I think I overthink things too much, which also leads me to a question. The final example you mention that you need to do it for the shadows as well, going from first shadow > second shadow > midtone > first highlight > second highlight. Bearing this in mind and going through A to B as you showed before that, is A your midtone here, or is it the first shadow?
all right honestly tho using oils makes smooth blends dead easy. Otherwise use a BIG brush (shape and size of the brush matter) and DO NOT dilute your paint: 1) place ur base colour 2) a tiny bit of your highlight colour 3) blend. If you dilute ur paint itwill dry up quickly, if u do not it will stay wet for longer. Rigid body paints 4 even longer. Another method: sketch shadows and highlights then smooth out applying midtones with an airbrush (or oils). I mean I just think people tend to approach this the wrong way. My opinion of course.
"Another method: sketch shadows and highlights then smooth out applying midtones with an airbrush" Whoa, I've never actually thought about it this way, can you see-Jane-run it for someone who's more of a visual leaner (like me)?
I don't really paint my minis in a traditional way, but I've managed to get smooth transitions, I mostly paint blood angels and typically I only use 3 colours per hue, my red, uses Game color: Scarlet Blood, Gory Red & Evil Red, my base coat is actually the same colour as my highlight, which is the Scarlet blood, what I started doing was, I would thin down my first shadow colour which is what I often call my definition colour, in this circumstance, its the gory red, I thin it down to an almost glaze level, once I am happy, I move onto the shadow, which is the evil red, using the same technique, if the colour isn't right I do another layer, now I paint in the highlights again, to achieve the smooth transition, I go over between the edges of the shadow and the highlights again with a thin layer of my definition colour, once I'm happy, I do a more controlled thicker layer of my highlights and edge highlight the zenithal facing edges, these days I also Zenithal spray my mini with my shadow and highlight colours to save time, but one thing I've noticed is that I like to work from light to dark, then back up to light again, I've only been painting minis for 2 years and can achieve parade ready standards, so I do recommend changing up techniques every so often, even to beginners
Hi Ataraxia! Thank you so much for your videos! I've started painting recently and I really appreciate your videos. Even if some concepts feels a bit hard to understand for me, I still understand something new everytime I watch (or rewatch) one of your videos. I feel like I improve really fast because of it, so thank you very much for all your work!

These "I took me 20 years to realize..." videos always make me wonder how young you might have started mini painting, like you look like you're in your early 30s and I'm wondering if it's an exaggeration for more clicks or if you've really been painting for 20 years ? I think you've said for a long time you were painting following GW's guides and not really improving though ? Anyway great as always ! Is there a way to support you even if I'm broke ?
I was introduced to warhammer by my elementary school best friend’s sister but only started painting and collecting minis in 2003. And I’m class 93! And believe it or not I haven’t stopped since! But yea for a long time I was just following guides… but still it has to count for something! Watching the video is plenty enough support!! Thanks!’
@@ataraxiapainting Whoa that's really cool, my gf also started in elementary school but she stopped for a long time and restarted a year ago when we got together and we had both Leviathan box halves, she's the brood mother and I'm the fem Marines ! 😎

Sure!! Those are all the magenta triads from the army painter!!
Grazie mile ! I hope I could achieve this technique, I find it so hard to do on amors like Slave to Darkness…

Alice this may be your funniest video yet. I was laughing out loud the whole way through. And for it to be informative too? How dare you.
I have that same wet pallet. I have noticed the paper with it absorbs water. Do you have this same issue? My army painter paper is much better.
Love your vids Alice keep em coming 👍
