Very cool setup - while the idea makes perfect sense to me, I would've never figured it out myself if I needed to make a spiral (in particular the attention to the universal joints). Minor nitpick: At 4:56, that is not actually what a helix looks like from the side, a sine shape would be more accurate. A way to see this is to consider a point moving along the helix at constant speed (like the tool when threadcutting), then in the perspective on the right, it would be moving down at constant speed and swinging left and right sinusodially (since it would be tracing out a circle as seen from above), which will trace out a sine shape. But it was clearly meant as a side note anyway and doesn't really matter, and the important points were all clear.

Thanks alot for point that out. Those lines should be the tangent lines not the actual curve of the spiral. For more precise the whole helix is a smooth space curve. Only look like a sine in 2d perspective. I was trying to bring you the relationship of spiral & thread. Lucky me they're pretty much on point. So this's the example of always double check anything from the internet 😆.
@ True, the sine only appears in 2D (in particular orthographic) projection. And the point about threads and spirals being similar came across pretty well in my opinion, and that's really what matters here
Hi. This is an excellent description. I own a BS-2 dividing head like yours but do not have a change gear setup. Can you recommend gear sizes for me to cut? It appears you made yours out of aluminum - is that sufficient?

Honestly as a native English speaker who interacts with a lot of people from South East Asia, your pronunciation is one of the clearest I’ve heard. Yes you have an accent but everything you said was clearly understandable which is tough to do with technical speech. Aside from that thank you so much for the detailed explanation of your amazing work. I always jump on your videos when they come out and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
This dude is one of the ultra rare natural born talents in machining. This guy is evidence of what is possible. Self-taught and already well beyond what many seasoned machinists and machinery builders alike can pull off. Pretty humbling stuff on this channel, I must say. Hats off to you sir. Also your English is more than adequate for your explanations. Very, very good job.
While you say that your English sucks, I think that it made you work harder to make a fantastically clear explanation of what you did. Definite thumbs up!
We understand your English just fine, sir. I really appreciate the explanations and I hope to hear more in your videos in the future, as I feel it does a great job connecting us to your work. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Cà Lem, you are living proof that genius knows no bounds or limitations. You find a way and no obstacle stops you! You've come a very long way from that first antique lathe that you rebuilt with nothing in the way of tools or experience. You are an inspiration to people all over the Earth! What an incredible story! I absolutely admire everything that you've accomplished! It is nothing short of astounding what you've done with no experience, training, or proper tools! You are the Einstein and Tesla of Vietnam! Wow! You are a treasure, truly a treasure! Thank you for going the extra mile (or kilometer :) and sharing the incredible things that you make! Thank you!
This was my fourth time watching this video, and I want you to know how much it makes me smile every time that I see the 6 jaw chuck which YOU built on the Mori Seiki which YOU brought back to life, and the same for the Bridgeport. You have SO much to be proud of, and are an inspiration to the rest of us who are privileged to watch you do these things. Thanks as always for taking the time to bring us along!
Your English is better than many native speakers. Your machining is next level. Please, don't be embarrassed to speak! I will happily work through your language barriers to learn.
Your English along with your diagrams were excellent. The design of the dividing head plus the drive train and VFD was absolutely BRILLIANT. I AM IMPRESSED. !!
Outstanding work and problem solving. You are in a small group of people that can do this and explain it clearly in a second language. Thank you for sharing your creativity and ingenuity with us!
Thanks for bringing this process to light. At first when you look at the set up it looks like a Rube Goldberg contraption but thanks to your description it all makes sense. Thanks for all your hard work.
Thank you, brother, for taking the time to make this video. The chuck build was fantastic, and this explanation of the thinking that went into generating the scroll is fantastic also. Your English doesn’t suck- the explanations are spot on and very thorough. Well done!!!
Thanks for the follow-up, totally worth the watch. The note about the universal joints not being constant-speed was an "oh, I hadn't thought of that" moment for me.
This is absolutely spectacular! Thank you for your explanation. Your English does not suck. Your videos are inspiring and I am looking forward to seeing what your next project is.
Your English is absolutely fine. I don’t imagine that you are surrounded by English speakers. So to be able to explain your setup so clearly is great. I live in China and it took me years for my Chinese to reach the level of your English. This build is on another level. Amazing!
That video was inspiring. Your skills are very good and your content is always interesting. You have overcome the language barrier with ease! Thanks for your time spent. I hope to see you soon.
Don't waste time doubting yourself! There are lots of people on line who will be happy to do it for you. I want to let you know that I very much appreciate your videos. I actually learn from you and that has been a huge boon. I genuinely understand spirals and pitch better now, purely because I watched this one video. My thanks for taking the time to make these videos, overcoming your own self doubt. You are making a difference in the world.
Ca Lem, you are a great teacher! I had no issue understanding the concept of what you built. I'm sure the maths was substantially harder and the calculations you went through to get the whole build working likely very time consuming. Hope you voice over your work more often in the future! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing what you do with your new toy
Your English is better than many native born Americans, Brits, or Aussies. Trying to understand American hill folk, Brit cockneys, Aussie brogans, or rural Scots can be almost impossible.

Very nice built. I don't know if it really matters (probably not so much because the result obviously works), but these universal couplings (cardan mechanism) introduce some inconsistencies. They do not transfer rotational speed constantly over the circumpherence.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the setup, its pretty good (good enough for a chuck since the inconsistencies would be equally spaced) but not suitable for high precision work like if he was making a scroll compressor.
@@MF175mp Yup, he mentions that at the end of the video. Hooke joints' accelerations cancel when the end shafts are parallel and the joints are in phase. If you want to run in a non-parallel config, say to hob a helical gear, then you need CV joints, no way to make a Hooke work.
The diving head and rotary table I have came from a machine built in the 40’s I think that actually had the gearing attachments to do these things using the power feed on the x or y axis. Very cool work you have done - the truth of mathematics is pretty cool to see it in action.
