Love this episode. As an introvert whose primary function is introverted intuition, I almost cried to hear how this function dignifies the inner, archetypal world and makes it real. I've been listening to a lot of people talk about their near death experiences, and I'm struck with how these experiences reflects a deeper version of my introverted intuition. Introverted intuition also makes me a natural contemplative.
As you have pointed out, the the majority of citizens in the USA are extroverted and sensate as well. Very, very exhausting for an introverted intuitive--at least for me. In order to cope at all, I often use the extroverted feeling function just to have contact with the world at large, so much so that I'm often mistaken for an extrovert. But friends, what percentage of people in this country are interested in Jung?? Or even having in-depth conversations? The world of myth, dreams, archetype, transcendence and profound meaning is where I come alive, where I put down the roots that ground me, but alas, so few people I know have any interest at all.
And yes, I have had the same thought that Deb expresses about how it's much harder to put introverted intuition into spoken language. And, I almost always have to write down my thoughts before I can share them with anyone in any comprehensible way. The exception to this is when I'm with the rare person who also "lives in the deep places." I love introverted intuition, but wow, it's lonely to have this function as a primary function.

I identity completely. I was in my 70’s before I met someone who “ spoke my language “ ! I had educated myself by journaling, reading, keeping dream journals for 55 years and now have the confirmation of this marvelous podcast! Thank you, Lisa, Deb and John !

I so relate to every word you've written here! It's very rare to find my kind of people. I'm an INFJ and definitely an introvert that can pretend to be an extrovert in limited doses but with great effort and much exhaustion and recovery time required afterwards!

Incredible source of inspiration. I’m an intuitive feeling type, have been “trying” to “fit in” or utilize this connection to the archetypal world to the benefit of something bigger… At this point I feel relieved from this urge of “fitting in. Thank you. Your work changed me. 🌟

I like what Joseph had to say about the Introvert’s love of their own thoughts. A bona fide introvert (according to the Meyers-Briggs Assessment)
I am the most interesting person I know! Ha!

I am an INFJ and HSP. Beginning to know myself was the first step in me understanding that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with me. I can be extroverted, I just get tired sooner than extroverts and then need alone time to process and recharge. 😀

This is exceptionally accurate. The external, sensory environment can be very disruptive to the archetypical world and over-stimulus does ruin the inner experience!
It’s really interesting to hear this put into words for the first time. I love the pause in the conversation lol! I often need time to process how I feel and think about a situation (INFJ). It needs to emerge on its own and can’t be rushed.

I found this episode to be particularly interesting, because the fourth wall was broken when you discussed how the group dynamic among the three of you had shifted while talking about introversion. The insights you reached we’re helpful for me to take a stand in my own introversion and recognize it’s fundamental value. Thank you for talking about this

Just the usual note that introversion, social anxiety, and the highly sensitive person aren't the same thing.
Unfortunately a large chunk of the academic literature is based on the Big Five definition of introversion as sensitivity, for instance being overwhelmed by crowds or noise, which has zilch to do with the Jungian concept of the inward turning mind.

The three of you are a very talented team. This is the very best explanation of introversion I’ve ever encountered!!! As I listened I said to myself, Yes, yes, yes!!! Someone understands! You are touching even the nuances deeply.
Thank you for helping me understand the mysteries within.

The key to me is abstraction. My favorite quote about this in Psychological Types:
"The abstracting type becomes so lost and submerged in this
image that finally its abstract truth is set above the reality
of life; and because life might disturb the enjoyment of
abstract beauty, it gets completely suppressed. He turns
himself into an abstraction, he identifies with the eternal
validity of the image and petrifies in it, because for him it
has become a redeeming formula. He divests himself of his
real self and puts his whole life into his abstraction, in
which he is, so to speak, crystallized."

Thanks for this talk! I'm learning a lot about myself. It's funny when i tell people at work or therapy that i'm introverted and often struggle with social situations/anxiety. They never seem to believe me when i say that. I'm able to do a bit of talking, making jokes and showing interest. But what they don't see is how uncomfortable i truly feel when i'm surrounded by many people. How i often go to the bathroom to just try and calm down. Or how i spend all of my other time alone at home.

About the dream…I realize this may seem too obvious, but what if, now that she’s 37, she feels a great sense of losing out on her chance to have children of her own “the clock is ticking” & she “hardly has a chance” (to detach from her mother & have time to find someone & start her own family; become a mother herself). And the amazement at the end that everyone seems fine as if the deep wave was no big deal. That could be saying that she really has nothing to worry about, that there is still time.

Could introversion be a viable alternative to a diagnosis of "autism spectrum 'disorder'" (high-functioning, of course!)?

I love your podcasts but I do believe reflecting Jung’s original concept will be way more insightful.
Jung determines Extraversion and Introversion by factor influencing the decision made by an individual.
If one decides to ride a motorcycle for one believes “motorcycle will bring on excitement” then in that statement, motorcycle (the object) has become the factor and hence the reality for the sensation of “excitement”. Hence this individual is said to have Extraverted General Attitude of Consciousness.
Inversely, for someone with an Introverted General Attitude of Consciousness, one would not equate riding a motorcycle with excitement nor is excitement discovered from the reality of motorcycle riding, but rather the sense-perception archetype of excitement from within the subject (the person) chooses motorcycle.
Hard concept to grasp at first, but to put it simply,
    For extraverts they would say
“Motorcycling (object) means excitement (sensation, or value)”
    Whereas Introverts would say
“Excitement (or I, the Subject) found motorcycling”
It is almost as if the introvert identify the very thing or sensation they seek as to be themselves and that they have brought such quality to the object.
And of course above is only true to the fact that one’s conscious function is Sensation. (Jung is different from Myer Briggs model in that he does not differentiate functions into Introverted and Extroverted but rather General Attitude of Consciousness and the functions existing in what attitude of consciousness, i.e. Thinking function in Extraverted General Attitude of Consciousness or Sensation in Extraverted Attitude of Consciousness” and an individual cannot have extraverted and introverted general attitude of consciousness at the same time.

if Rilke used this above mentioned quote - he probably got it from Goethe:
"...und wenn ich dich lieb habe, was geht's dich an?"

Thx folks. We're such a social, aka, 'tribal' species to begin with that has managed to _survive_ thru 'extroversion' and 'interpersonal' relations. So any bias we have against 'introversion' is probably inevitable, and this is also the first time in our collective history when even the average individual can be much more 'independent', and no longer *_has_* to 'depend' on their 'social relations' with others.
