FIXING the Infamous Kia EV6 Rattle! 😀

  • My 2022 Kia EV6 has had a rattle tapping sound for as long as I can remember and it's so annoying. I tried everything I could think of to find the rattle in my Kia EV6 and fix the issue, but nothing worked. My local Kia dealership unfortunately was no help either. Well Jon - AKA @unobtaniumsquickreviews6999 - has been working with his Kia dealership to figure out what the issue is and they found these cabin pressure flaps in the back that appeared to be the cause. Sure enough, that was it. I put some yarn in between the flaps and the contact points in my Kia EV6 and no more tapping sound! I'm so excited. I hope this helps you guys out too 😀

    I have also noticed the sound, but I would suggest not leaving the vents open and not using yarn since water and time will probably cause them to get moldy, maybe. I would suggest thin automotive foam tape around the flap edges to allow them to function as they do, but would stop the sound of the flapping.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  Год назад +4

      Yeah the yarn was more of a temporary fix while I had it open. That said, I don't think moisture can really get there much and the EV6 does have the auto dehumidify feature. I don't think it'd be too bad. But yeah foam tape would be better.

    I don't think that forcing the vents open permanently is actually going to be a bad thing. In normal ICE cars, which ventilate only when the car is active, sure, I can see why this would be a thing. Don't want to ingress moisture after a downpour. But the EV6, from what I've read, does a ventliate funciton now and then to dehumidify the car, so it naturally will vent the car while parked. Doing it this way though, not sure it's the best way to do it, I'd have, as you said, put felt tape on the flappers and quietened it down that way.

    You could run a thin bead of hot glue around the contact face of the flaps, keep them open and let it cool. That would leave a softer contact patch.
    If you think it would affect the weight / operation of the flap, put the bead on the face of the panel.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  Год назад

      I thought about that but didn't have hot glue. Thinking about it more though, hot glue is somewhat hard. Even if it's a little softer, it still would make a sound with the flap closing. And the fact of the panel is hard to do I think. Several spots it contacts have a VERY thin cross section.

      Hmm I don't think so. I haven't heard anything in that area and I don't think they place flaps in the front. They are designed to release air when the HVAC is not on recirculate, and that air comes out the front and exits the rear. It could be something loose. Maybe check the panels on that side.

You explain how you are the customer, and they are the service provider, and that this is going to be addressed just like you said it will be. Period. End of negotiation. I can 100% promise if you drop a note to Kia of America if your dealership causes you any distress, and are incompetent in resolution of this matter, after making several attempts, you will absolutely get what you came for 100% of the time every time, all the time.
    Please remove all that you did as fine dust and possible dampness caused by the cotton/wool combination in the yarn, and high voltage is a recipe for catastrophic results. You must insist your dealership address this issue and add resolve to your liking, not theirs. You are the customer. They do what you request or otherwise expect them to do until a resolution is reached. Period.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  8 месяцев назад

      I get where you are coming from, but this is unfortunately not something the dealership will resolve. Many have tried with dealerships and the problem is the air flaps are acting as designed. They open and close when needed to vent the air and balance pressure. The sound is an unfortunate byproduct. As for my solution, all the battery components and wiring are sealed and even on very damp days it doesn't get damp. I'm not really worried there too much.

I can't say when it started - we've had the car for 1.5 years and really like it - but now it seems to be audible when the car's driven on anything but the smoothest road surfaces.
    I have taken everything out of the glove compartment and front cup holders, and I have looked over the frunk, but nothing seems loose - and the noise still occurs. So, I suspect something's loose under the dashboard panels but I don't know how to remove them. Also, it may not be a good idea for me to attempt it. Then, too, I imagine the dealer would charge a hefty sum to do the R&R. Help!

      Hmm I (and others) have heard a rattle under the center console, seemingly under the wireless charger. Is that possibly the area? If I push on it the sound goes away. I just haven't taken the time to really look into it. Otherwise, I'm not sure what it would be. As for the dealership, you could bring it in and say there is a rattle behind the dash and you're worried something might be loose that could cause an issue (electrical, etc). I know my dealership would drive it, listen for it, and try to figure it out.

    I’ve had my Limited Edition EV6 for a month now, but have not yet noticed the sound. But I think I’ll address it when I try and put the sequential rear turn signals in before springtime. I am wondering if those flaps were made that way for airflow or something. I don’t want to prevent or block air if that was Kia’s intention, but I do want to get rid of the sound that may or may not be there. I was thinking of some kind of small adhesive rubber or silicone studs or something just to stop the flaps from smacking the base, causing that flippin sound. Guess we will see…

      It doesn't block airflow. They can still open further and air goes around the yarn. If anything it keeps the vents open instead of allowing to close, so it's not quite such a sealed cabin. The vents allow air to escape if cabin pressure builds, like when not using recirculate or when you close doors.

    On the other hand, the said method may defect the purpose and function of "quarter panel vent". As the flaps are permanently open, dust or insect can enter the cabin. Besides, the openings are partially blocked by the wrapped material.
    Counter proposal: use thin insulated film to wrap the frame opposite against the inner surface of the flaps. This won't affect the movement of the flaps due to additional weight bearing on them.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  Год назад

      Yeah I don't think too much will get there but we'll see if I notice anything. Might just change the cabin air filter more often lol. But yeah I was thinking it could make sense to glue a little weight on the back side of the flaps. That would make it a little harder to open and keep them from fluttering all the time, but still would work for the major pressure.
