my volleyball tryouts are in less than a week and i have no experience. i’m still determined to try my best though and i’m happy that i’m actually giving it a try. wish me luck! i’ll update y’all when i get the result
day 1 of tryouts: omg i think i did really good. my serves made it over the net and the coach even complemented me! i made the cut and tmrw we’re doing some drills, i’m so scared. i’ll tell y’all what happens!
day 2: i didn’t do as good as yesterday, i was partnered with a girl that didn’t know how to play. overall i think i was just average, didn’t rlly stand out. don’t feel that good but i have one more chance to prove myself tmrw!
Results: i made it to the fourth day of tryouts and we were given the results. i made it on the team!!! i’m not sure if i’m on a or b team yet but i’ll let y’all know asap

I never had played volleyball in my life but a friend told me to try out with her and I did but before tryouts I started watching your videos because I was actually interested and I tried out in May and now I play middle back, and libero and I still can’t believe I made it because I’m 15 with no sports experience
Just an update: Starting may Im going into my second year on varsity, last season we made it to sweet 16 in state, and just wanted you guys to know that anything is possible as long as you put you mind into it, tell yourself your good enough, know that you deserve a stop on the team, don’t ever doubt yourself!
Also here are the injuries I’ve had in the past two season (like I said I had never played sports so my body wasn’t used to this): 2 sprained ankles, pulled the muscle in hip, tendinitis in my knee, and a tear in my Rotator cuff (shoulder)

I've always been scared of trying out for sports eversince 6th grade. Now that I'm graduating 8th, once I step into highschool, I will get out there and finally try. Whenever it's gym class I would always get excited when we would play volleyball. Now, I will promise myself to atleast try when I get to highschool even if I get in or not.

same, i've been scared of balls hitting my face for the longest time (1st grade) so i never wanted to play sports, but people often told me that i was a good setter when playing volleyball in pe so i'm finally gonna try a sport for the first time! good luck!!

Another update: sadly I can’t play this season, right before practices started I broke my tibia and needed to have 2 surgery’s, so I can’t play for a while and it’s devastating, but I’ll power through and tryout next season!

wildlemonade first we got warmed up like laps and stretches then we practiced with a partner (like bumping, setting, and hitting) then we practiced as a group. We played queens, butterfly for the first two days. On the last day we played a game so the coaches can see what position you’ll most likely be playing.

Almost 40 freshman are trying out and only ab 12 are making it so i’m like super scared but i was at every open gym this summer so far and I know we have to run the mile under 830 also do 16 sprints on the back of the gym to the half-court line in one minute so i’m fricken nervoussss.

I have tryouts next week and I really don't think I'm going to make a team. I went to all the open gyms and volleyball camps one in the winter and I'm currently taking one right now. I honestly think I'm ok but I still need more practice. I will edit if i made the team or not wish me luck

Okay so here’s my volleyball story. (Nobody’s probably gonna read this but I just REALLY need to rant). I started playing volleyball about a year and a 1/2 ago. At first I progressed insanely fast as I have been an athlete my entire childhood. I also left my 3 years of competitive tennis behind to pursue volleyball. After playing house league for half a year I tried out for a club team and my school team. I didn’t make the club team which wasn’t a shock. Yet, it was still a great blow to my confidence because I was made fun of at the tryouts and I felt like I stuck out for way less experienced then the other girls. Later on I tried out for my high-school team (I was a freshman). That year my school cut the JV team so I had to try out for varsity. I made it past 3 rounds of tryouts and was one of the top 4 freshman left. Sadly I didn’t make yet another team and it devastated me. To make matters worse the coach personally told me that I would have been guaranteed a spot if there was a JV team. Since then I have played volleyball on a select team for 5 months before the pandemic hit. During quarantine I put up a makeshift volleyball net in a park next to my house and practiced playing with my dad at least 3 times a week. Now I have club tryouts coming up in 2 weeks. Sadly, school tryouts are canceled this year due to the pandemic. I honestly feel like I haven’t improved all that much and still won’t be able to match the girls who have been playing rep for years. I am TERRIFIED. Making a club team is my dream. Wish me luck. 💕🥺😭
(Update): I made a club team! I’m so shocked. It only took tryouts for 3 different clubs. Third times the charm I guess 😂💕

Good luckkkkkkk! I've also been practicing whenever I can(mostly with my dad) and it was kind of scary going to a summer conditioning thing at my highschool(I'm a freshman too) last year I was benched. I got put in some games but it was when we were behind and the other team had like... 24 points. The ball would get served to someone else so ;-; not the best season. I've just been working on passing recently and I guess it paid off. I've been told my passes and sets are pretty good. I wish you the best of luck at your club tryouts. I've never played club volleyball, only at the YMCA and 1 season at my school last year. I don't really have any good advice but this is what I can offer... Focus, stay calm but get excited, don't let anyone else get you down, go pretty much ou. I mean like... Diving for balls and stuff. When you're running, I try to use my ankles. This probably isn't the best idea but it gets me farther and my legs arent as tired as they would be if I ran with my whole body. Uhhhhh... I'll stop typing now 👉👈

I’m just binging volleyball videos for tips and advice even though we might not go back to school. The attitude enthusiastic part that’s my personality. I’ve never even played volleyball before this year and I made the team, probably because I was cracking jokes at the coach’s 24/7. As of this point I think I’m pretty close to my favorite coaches

I loved volleyball for a while and I started practicing all summer, I tried out for my school team and made it as the setter. I was doing really good and the coach along with my teammates trusted me to the fullest, I was so happy and I remember those were my best times on a volleyball team were there. Then I got called into an office, they said I was suspended from the volleyball team because math was kicking my ass. I remember freezing there unsure of what to say, I was so devastated. I just left wanting to play again, wanting to just step on the court already. I studied myself crazy that night, I kept studying and studying. I started getting higher scores and in the end I clutched my math test. I still have problems keeping my grades up, I have a very hard time paying attention and I'm not sure why. As soon as they start talking I follow the teacher, then lose them half way.
I’m trying out tomorrow for my middle school team, I will definitely use your advice! I’ll tell you how they went, and give updates. I’m so nervous, especially for serving. I’ve been practicing all summer.
Edit: okay done with day 2 out of 4! Going good so far, ahaha. We find out the results on Tuesday night.
Edit: lol sorry I was too lazy to update! I made the team, yayyyyy! I have my first game on Wednesday, tysm for the advice! Last edit: I’m now in high school haha long time no see.

Hi Victoria, I am writing to thank you, I just watch your TedxTalk and was moved by it. I agree, an athletes mental well-being are not taken as serious as there physical well-being. For you to put yourself out there and tell your story is so brave and inspirational. I have a family member who had suffered with depression, fortunately we live in New Zealand where our Health system provides support and through therapy she is doing fantastic.
More people should stand up and speak out so it is not criticised but one day be treated as a health issue that it is.

hey, I'm starting freshman year of high school soon and I wanna play volleyball. I haven't ever played a sport out of p.e. but I really wanna play and idk if I can pass tryouts. Do you think I can still play even if I'm kinda short?

Karime make sure you know where your position is at all times ( during the first day of tryouts i didnt understand any plays ) , also carry yourself with confidence, i think coaches like to see that you can work well with your teammates so try to be friendly but maintain a competitive mindset as well ; also, if youre a little worse at setting than passing, ask your coach if there is anything you can change to improve ( or ask a friend if youre too nervous for the coach HAHAH ) - ooo and make sure you can do very physical workouts, our first day was mainly us running the mile and doing workout stations, we didnt play until our second day of tryouts. im sorry that the tips are all over the place, i hope they help! :)
