    I play badminton. You should try the other version of the split step where you don't jump up. You drop down by widening your feet by a couple inches. I find that it's faster and more explosive.

    1. get low to use legs, finish high
    2. a little off midline so dont hit chest
    3. platform with connected elbows
    4. big arc to setter
    5. move, avoid back to setter
    6. arms inside the knees
    7. drop 1 shoulder to target right of left
    8. legs shoulder width get low
    9. low to high

    16:42 you can see clearly the smile in his eyes when he got the point of being a little bit low and being able to receive better instantly (after the Pro review), its like a Hinata Shoyo after getting his first good pass. As a setter i also give this tip(being low to react fast) to all receivers in my team and its been really usefull.

    Sorry, but I’m not understanding why Gage is always bending his platform after passing. I’ve always been coaching that you keep your arms extended and freeze platform for 2-3 secs after ball release

    I went to Pac Rim facility to do lessons with the Donovan Constable, and he mentioned that Joe is a really great setter who happens to set similarly. Will there be another setter video with Joe? If so, can you talk about cushioning the ball or having “sticky hands” (like holding onto the ball for a small amount of time instead of only pushing outwards)?

    Can you explain why over is better than off the net? Isnt over giving away a ball. If its off, at least we have an out of system set.... or did I misunderstand?

    • @jay7tennis
      @jay7tennis 3 месяца назад +1

      I need clarification too 😂 I just told my girls at AAU that we do NOT want to give the other team a free ball with an overpass and that we would rather have the balls on our side off the net.

    • @bradmckavanagh7202
      @bradmckavanagh7202 3 месяца назад +9

      ahh pro setters usually jump set and make contact higher than the net so makes sense why over would be easier for the setters they play with, don't apply this if your setters dont jump set or are under the net.

      To set with more pace, in higher levels we do jump sets a lot. The body lenguage and decision speed need to be a thing to the defense we're facing

    There’s this mantra martial arts have a lot that says “Foot Work - Body Work - Hand Work”
    I feel like that’s a universal truth for athleticism in general.

  • @jay7tennis
    @jay7tennis 3 месяца назад +1

    To me it looked like Coach Donny wasn’t moving OFF of the split step.
    I saw the split step, a tiny moment of being stationary, and then the push off the feet to go for the ball.
    Tough for Gage to hit the down ball and see if the timing of Coach Donny’s split step was there.

    These videos with Gage are incredible gems for transitioning into a bit more advanced play, where I've felt a lot of frustrating plateaus in my ability and the need to branch out & explore what I am really comfortable with... similarly with the content Dustin Watten has been putting out lately, I'm sure you've seen those too :)
    I especially like the smooth low-high philosophy you guys talked about. I rarely ever leave youtube comments but thank you SO MUCH for these videos! It wasn't so long ago that I learned how to put a basic platform together from your tutorials :)

    My coach constantly tells me to not swing my arms when I'm receiving, but if I don't I feel the ball doesn't go high enough for the setter. Any advice? I have been focusing on fixing my platform and keeping low to use my legs.
