ebony made the sound warmer, but boxwood made the sound brighter. The chin rests that were screwed in the middle sounded more focused while the chin rests on the side were less.
"I thought the boxwood sounded more hollow, the ebony guarneri (n.3) gave the sound more quality and depth to it. This was the absolute top for me, although the other ebony was also good." ......I agree!!!
Thank you for the trial! I agree with most of the comments that ebony or boxwood makes a difference. For me middle adjustment an connected screws seems better, also the titanium screws.
I thought I preferred the Dresden style (more.. voice) until the last one. Ebony sound smoother, box wood sounds more punchy and brighter. I imagine the "best" would depend on the violin innate sound without the chin rest.
I liked that violin with the ebony. It seemed to bring out the full character. The boxwood was a little muffled, nasal. #3 sounded smoother, richer, clearer; #5 was beautiful, deeper. Was #6 ebony?
Preferred the sound of ebony over boxwood. The rest is so subjective with so many variables. Currently playing without one. Ergonomically I need to be more over the tailpiece. I want to try Gotz "Jacob" , but shipping from Germany or the UK costs more than the chinrest. I can't stand how my violin sounds with a side mounted chinrest. Closest I've come is a Schulz-Priska.
Box wood definitely gives the violin more resonance, most dramatic changes was no2 and 8, but could also be down to how comfortable it was from Mr Basha🤷🏼♀️
Yeah, it is possible that comfort played a role in the quality of the sound. When I was studying in Mexico my teachers didn't pay too much attention to that, but now in Kraków, my teacher recommended me to change to no shoulder rest technique, so I changed to a Flesch chinrest and my sound has improved since I'm more relaxed this way.
Adrián Buenfil Sounds good! Your teacher sounds like a great one. I was always encouraged to change things up every 6 months as we can easily slip into false comfortability when we don’t try to experience different set ups till you find your spot. Glad you can connect with your instrument this way.
I'm not used to the box wood sound yet. I am enjoying number 3 the most but one he start playing with I really loved too hill screws box wood. I should try it when I can play the violin a bit more bc I'm beginner but I have big musical ear due to studied music and being dancer
Nice video! Hey Edgar could u make a video about the difference in sound would be with a low quality bridge and a high quality bridge? ( Low quality: Luxe Bridge & High Quality: Deluxe Bridge) cello
I thought the boxwood sounded more hollow, the ebony guarneri (n.3) gave the sound more quality and depth to it. This was the absolute top for me, although the other ebony was also good. I'm playing with a 'manmade material' chinrest from Wittner right now, as it's adjustable in height. I wonder though what an ebony model would do for my sound.
3 And tjhe last one. Very interesting. Would like to . See another comparison at anothet time. Right now My. Chin and shodet rests off both of my violins. Considering re.mounting them both so I can vibrato. Presently, am of the opinion chin rests damp the tone of violin.but oil from chin may ruin top plate of violin. Its a dillema.
You should all go for the one they missnamed the bigger Dresden here. It's actually a Teka and if you get the ebony version from GEWA then you will have the most comfortable chinrest in existence.
Test the Wave chinrest next. It is made from African Padauk wood that enhances the instrument's tone. It is also beautifully crafted and comes in two different models (depending on your preferred violin hold more to the front, or more to the left) as well as three different heights as a standard. You can order a custom fit as well if none of those fit your needs. You can get more information about it here: www.wavechinrest.com/ I am an adult beginner and have tried a lot of setups before finding it and nearly gave up playing because I had severe pain after practicing. Since finding this chinrest and I was able to adjust my shoulder rest to a lower height. I also do not have to get to the chinrest with my head. Instead, the chinrest comes to me, so I can keep my natural balance while playing. I am pain-free. I'm using it for nearly a year now and absolutely love it.
Hill screws are the ones when the attaching mechanism is made out of two single legs to fix the chin rest on the edge of your instrument. If these two legs are connected on the back side of the instrument it is a single mechanism with two legs. Actually you should try it out with your instrument what is really better because every instrument responds different. all the best from Cremona Edgar
It was a bit of a pain trying to jump back and forth between the different sound clips of the chinrests - At the very least timestamps are necessary here as our brains cannot remember sound as well as we'd like to think. We need to be able to switch right away. In a live situation where you're taking minutes to switch between variables, you can forget about getting a really scientific result. Edit: Thanks for the timestamps, and being able to switch quickly let me hear the differences better, and hence I've had to revise my impressions. I think 8 sounded best.
Not a lot of difference, I would not look to this doing a major change like sound post adjustment. Naked, without the mass of the chin and shoulder rest would be interesting to see if you hear any difference, you should be able to manage playing something without the neck fittings.
I like #4 it is rich and warmer. it is very educational which I agree it is huge effect. also player may feel too.
Hi Edgar! I love to see such tests. I actually liked nr 2 boxwood the most. It made the violin’s sound very profound and dark.
ebony made the sound warmer, but boxwood made the sound brighter. The chin rests that were screwed in the middle sounded more focused while the chin rests on the side were less.
I have same experience.
"I thought the boxwood sounded more hollow, the ebony guarneri (n.3) gave the sound more quality and depth to it. This was the absolute top for me, although the other ebony was also good." ......I agree!!!
I preferred the guarnari boxwood connected and the titanium hill, easily were the best to me!
Thank you for the trial! I agree with most of the comments that ebony or boxwood makes a difference. For me middle adjustment an connected screws seems better, also the titanium screws.
At the end of video, it would be nice to splice the clips together with no delay so viewer can really hear if there is any difference.
Have no memory? And people saying me what are you (me) doing in music:)
My opinion the last is the best
This was excellent thank you. I would like to hear a rosewood to ebony comparison of the hill screw setup. Guarneri and middle if possible

The ebony sound much better for me. The depth is great.

....would be great to hear first a sound example WITHOUT a chinrest!!!!!

I concur. I found all the ebony with connected screws to be at the top of what I prefer. I think 3 was my favorite also.
No.2 definitely by a wide margin.
In my uneducated opinion I agree however number 8 sounded very nice too
Edgar can u play violin
3

Center model is better to reproduce the original resonance with bigger volume.

I am confused what is hill or connected screw. I definitely liked ebony best. Is center mount better for sound?

Edgar
I have number 3 now I ordered number 2 so I'll make mini battle myself
Most of the boxwoods sound from a far(more proyection?) and the ebony louder or more coming from the violin(less proyection?)
If this is true the violinist would hear a lot louder sound with the ebony
@@kamikan22 Do more research lmao.
